Smith, the white prime minister of Rhodesia who engineered the country's unilateral independence from Britain in 1965 and led resistance to the black majority until Zimbabwe was born of post-civil war negotiations in 1979, has written an unrepentant, heavily detailed account of his leadership. He proceeds from the posture that the black majority, significantly rooted in traditional culture, should be "gradually" brought up to "standards of Western civilization." He condemns outside countries that "arrogant[ly]" applied sanctions against Rhodesia and associates black opposition more with communism than nationalism. He claims that "our black people" had the best education, health, housing, services, etc. in Africa, not acknowledging the gap between white and black Rhodesia. He refers to black "terrorists" while downplaying the cruelties of Rhodesia's armed forces. Yet Smith makes some points. He offers inside details of negotiation, including pressure from South Africa. His title refers to the hypocrisy of the British Commonwealth, which imposed sanctions on Rhodesia while many of its other members were one-party states. I read this book in a library edition. Wow, I was woefully ignorant of Rhodesian politics and the truly magnificent man, war hero, and political philosopher named Ian Smith. Based on what I had read in the news media in the USA during the 1970s, I formed so many false opinions and images of the Rhodesia-Zimbabwe debacle. What a sad, shameful story. Smith proved to be correct in the end. An imperfect democratic republic became an evil dictatorship by the 1980s and remains so. The behavior of the U.N., Britain and the Commonwealth was disgraceful during the long crisis following the Rhodesian UDI in 1965 (the first UDI from Britain since America in 1776!). Smith's book is a superb story of modern African, humanity's deadly obsession with race, left-and-right political hubris, the demise of both empire and Britain's moral authority, a look at the natural desire to follow one's own national star--and all with a very bittersweet ending.

This is an interesting bio from Ian Smith. He proves himself to be a man of high character--pragmatic, courageous, reliable, and a bit prosaic. He was a man who believed firmly in colonialism and in bringing the benefits of Western Civilization to primitive societies such as the ones in Africa. Unfortunately, Britain and whites in general had started to lose faith in the superiority of their civilization and pulled out of their colonial project, leaving white Rhodesians stranded to fight their own battle to save their country with those other "rogue" states, South Africa and Portugal. The British politicians favored communist terrorists over their own kinsmen.Ian Smith was a middle of the road conservative and really did not support racist policies in government, although he was a race realist regarding the abilities of native Africans. He believed in a policy of gradually giving blacks majority rule once they had been sufficiently prepared for a government system created by whites. That would require high rate of literacy that blacks did not have. African blacks' IQ has been estimated to around 70 by Richard Lynn. A lot of them did not even know what a constitution was. Even this policy would require faith in being able to educate blacks enough to be able to rule responsibly. As bad as white government can be; black majority rule is worse. Giving blacks majority rule in a democratic system will still make any country go into decline. It is not solely the Western system that makes for good government, but it is the intelligence and character of the best white people that makes for good government, if you can elect them. Once Mugabe and his cronies took the seats of power, they started using their power for their own selfish ends. Smith shows well how communists operate with their deceit, violence, and oppression. Smith did have high praise for African's tribal system of government, which he thought was better in some ways to the Western system.The British politicians were not much better. It seems whites use their higher intelligence merely to manipulate weaker parties in a lot of cases. Intelligence has to be wedded with high character for good statesmanship. I think Africa would have been better off with a white minority colonial government than it is with the black communists. Colonialism does require that if the natives violently resist, they must be put down or it will not be safe for whites to live there. Rhodesia had too few whites to be able to establish a white colony there, especially after Britain turned against them.Rhodesia was not an apartheid state like South Africa and they allowed anyone of any race to vote. Smith complained about the declining moral standards of the commonwealth saying that they allowed communist dictatorships with human rights violations to join an organization that is supposed to uphold the principles of democracy, decency, and fairness. British politicians were more worried about offending communist "allies" than letting Rhodesia become an independent country and lifting sanctions against them.Ian Smith loved his country and stayed there until his death and after it turned into the horrid Mugabe's Zimbabwe. There is no greater sadness than when a man loses his own country. It worries me that the U.S. may go the way of Rhodesia because the same thinking and forces are weighed against it, just as it is against all countries of the West. The outposts of the West have fallen, how long until the disease reaches the heart?The content of the book is dense with small type that stretches all over the page, making it a long read. Smith covers all his negotiations with the British. It can be a little boring at times. A politician has to have a lot of patience with endless talk that often goes nowhere and often leads to reversals and defeats.To Smith's detractors, I will say that you have to believe Smith's side of the story to think highly of him. I have not read any critical books about him and I am not expert on this part of the world.

He clearly understood the difference between a responsible black majority rule government, that respected the rights of all minorities within Rhodesia and a communist trained and backed black majority rule government, that used terrorist tactics like mutilation and murder mainly against the black civilian populations, as a tool of intimidation for those unwilling to cooperate with their quest for a one party Marxist dictatorship.Rhodesia was betrayed by the British and finally by South Africa its main ally. The success and kill ratio of the counter insurgency operations by the security forces, were second to none, but by the end of the 1970's, South Africa was seriously tampering with this success by stopping, delaying, and retrieving their military logistical support and hardware, in an effort to force the Smith government to enter in negotiations and sign agreements that weren't in the best interest of Rhodesia.Smith understood the inevitability of majority rule since the early 60's when he signed the Victoria Fall agreement, but he believed in a gradual transition that could prepare a new generation of black democratic leaders, but we all know how this one ended, a surrounded and betrayed country was forced to its knees and deliver by its "friends" into the hands of the communist dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.

I'm just writing this to get this off my review wall. bought for my son.

This set includes the trilogy, along with the extra book titled, "Four". I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!

First off, I have to admit that it is difficult for me to rate this book without rating the series as a whole, so that is what I am going to do. It turns out I cannot review this series without comparing it to Hunger Games.There is a great deal of similarity between this series and Hunger Games. Teenage coming-of-age adventure story in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. I could go further into the premise, but it really does not make much sense outside the context of the book.Again, like Hunger Games, I found the first book gripping and devoured it quickly. The second book did a good job of keeping up that pace.Then the third book comes up, and, once again like Hunger Games, it takes the "Us vs. Them" story and throws in "oh look, These Guys Too! Bet you didn't see THAT coming!" plot hook, and things go off the rails for me. The first two books seem to be building your hope for the characters and the world they live in and the ability for them to make the world better. Then they expand the world, and the third book goes about crushing your hopes of a happy ending.While reading the first two books, I was a little bummed that it would be over in three. By the time I was about a quarter through the third book, I was ready for it to be done. I was looking forward to Four during the first two books. After reading the third, I don't have any real interest in reading Four anymore.The real world does not have happy endings for everyone, but this isn't really about happy endings. It is more about building up these characters to great heights with the implication that they will usher in a new age. Then, it turns out in the end they are a cog in a machine in the end. Important, sure, but used to an end just the same. I would actually rate the first two books at five stars, but the third book is such a letdown that it brings down the whole series for me, and this book is useless without the other two. If you read Hunger Games and loved it, this scratches the same itch. In the end, I didn't hate it, but it lost a lot of luster quickly in the end.

I have to start by saying that watching the Divergent movie made me want to read the book. I really enjoyed the movie and I thought for sure there was more in the book. Movie goers didn’t miss as much as I had hoped.Beatrice is about to take the test that will determine which of the five factions she will go into for the rest of her life. The five factions are: Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave) and Abnegation (the selfless). Each of the factions carries out certain job throughout the city. Those without factions do all the dirty work and have no rights in society. Born into Abnegation, everyone thinks she will stay in. On the day of the test, Beatrice learns she is Divergent. Fitting into not just one, but many factions. She chooses Dauntless and is told to keep her Divergent identity secret. In dauntless Beatrice renames herself Tris, and she is tested to determine who she really is. Her failure could leave her factionless. Her testing will reveal that she is divergent if she isn’t careful. Being divergent might just get her killed.I can’t believe how spot on the movie was. I could completely picture the scenes while I read this book. There were only a few details left out of the movie Divergent. This book was really addictive. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I couldn’t stop reading the story. There were a few interactions left out and we get a more in depth look at Tris’ struggle to leave Abnegation and her whole family behind. The development of her relationship to Four made much more sense in the book and he was instrumental in the end. We also get more of an explanation of Tris’ fears and why Four was so different from his peers when he graduated.I really enjoyed the character building, getting to know her friends and her fears. The author is able to draw in the reader right from the start. The location of this story is a dytopian Chicago. I liked the gradual world building in this story. The whole society is cut off from the outside. The idea that people are either of 5 personalities was really problematic for divergents because they have characteristics from more than one. The struggle to pick just one thing for the rest of your life is something a lot of young adults can probably relate to as they make career choices, so this story may feel close to home.

This is a very attractive little book with tantalising photographs of drinks and the Parisian bars in which one can enjoy them. There are also brief descriptions of the some of the best bars in Paris. The main problem is that the recipes themselves are of little practical value. Many are unnecessarily fussy, specifying particularly obscure brands of cassis, whisky, cognac or whatever when any top drawer version will do. Worse, the majority of concoctions require rather exotic ingredients such as hibiscus liqueur, ylang ylang water or lavender syrup that are not likely to find much use in the home bar. Indeed, such ingredients are unlikely to be found in professional establishments other than those in which the cocktails were created. Finally, there are some puerile errors. The classic "French 75" is made with gin not cognac. Every bartender in France knows that one never pours pastis onto ice before adding water as this crystalises the anethole (the volatile essence), resulting in an unsightly film on the drink's surface. And Ms. Belau refers to the Royal Monceau as a "four-year-old hotel" when it was opened in 1928. She also moves it to the rue de Rivoli from its address on the avenue Hoche.Nevertheless, this is a handsome volume that will provide a fair measure of browsing pleasure.

Honest seller, and arrived FAST and ahead of time. I would use seller again, and people should use this seller. Saw at my library, took it home, looked through quick, then I decided to buy a copy. As I have been to France (Paris) twice: 1986, 1996. Second time there was best. Great price. BUY A COPY! And have a drink on me! OUI! MERCI! Au Revoir.

This is a beautiful book. If you can't tell from the image of the cover, the cocktail glass is actually a cut-out that reveals a map of Paris, which is printed on the endpapers. Jennifer Homans was a professional dancer trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts, American Ballet Theatre, and The School of American Ballet. She performed with the Chicago Lyric Opera Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Currently the dance critic for The New Republic, she has written for The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The New York Review of Books, and The Australian. She earned her B.A. at Columbia University and her Ph.D. in modern European history at New York University, where she is a Distinguished Scholar in Residence.

This is, in so many ways, an exceptional effort on the part of the author, Jennifer Homans. She organizes a vast amount of material in a lucid way and her prose is lively and entertaining. The history of ballet is laid out in a way that makes you want to keep reading. But I was tremendously let down, as a reader, to go through 500+ pages of ballet history and then end up in a ten page argument about the death of ballet. You mean I read through all those pages for nothing? There's no future at all in the art form? Why would Homans expect anyone to pick up and read her fine book if they didn't love ballet -- or at least were curious enough to learn more? And as ballet lovers, do we want to hear about how bad it has all gotten? Homans, of course, is welcome to her opinion and that opinion is one we need to honor. But anyone could argue otherwise -- that ballet is alive and well -- and that gets proven every time I see a performance. So why did her editors let her tack on this coda? Why not, at least, give some arguments from both sides?

I know ballet history. And I love dance. I expected that Apollo's Angels would be a pleasant addition to my shelves of ballet books and maybe add a few tidbits of information I did not know.But this book as so much more. It's written by a thinking ex-dancer who can put the history of dance into a philosophical and cultural context. I'm sure that at nearly every page I was exclaiming ``oh, that's why'' or ``now I know.'' I think her explanation of the origins of ballet in the etiquette and self image of the Sun King's court is the best I've ever read.I don't think I ever really understood the deep spirituality that underlies Balanchine's choreography until I read this book. It made me go back and spend hours watching videos of long-gone dancers on YouTube.I'd quibble over a few things. Why didn't she include Mark Morris for example? And what's coming out of China and Japan? And I'm not sure her prognosis about the future of ballet need be quite so glum.But at bottom, this book is a must for anyone who is halfway interested in the history of ballet, or, for that matter, the cultural history of the early 20th century. Thank you Jennifer Homans!

I started ballet late in life, in my sophomore year of high school. I had 4 left feet, was fat, and uncoordinated, so I had no aspirations to become a ballerina. I am currently 61 and still taking classes regularly. In my fortys I began to wonder and ask questions how ballet evolved. I asked my ballet teacher who was elderly and she said she didn't know of any books on the subject. I was delighted to hear the review on NPR radio when the book was first published. It was a tedious read for me because of all the detail but it was necessary to tell the story. As the book progressed into the 1900s it became more fascinating and relatable to me as I had witnessed Nureyev, Fontayne and others. It was fascinating to see where dance had come from, where it is now and maybe where it is progressing. Even my own preferences of dance are evolving. Thank you Ms Homan's for all of your hard work and skill to create this work of art in itself.

As others have noted, this is a comprehensive, exhaustively researched -- but not exhausting -- history of ballet, from its roots in the French courts of the 18th century to the present . Pretty much all of this was new and fascinating to me. Homans does a beautiful job of charting ballet's many rises and falls throughout the years, keeping it interesting and clear at every step. My only criticism would be the perfunctory and inconclusive way in which the book ends. Homans pretty much comes to no conclusion, leaving the reader -- this one, in any event -- hanging. She makes her opinions about the direction and future of ballet pretty clear, but after 500 or so pages, I expected a more measured summing up. It's as if your guide a long voyage has left you at a remote rail station and has said, "Okay you're on your own from her on out, good luck." Disappointing. Other than that, well worth the time and energy.

The book itself is very general although it covers a wide range of topics. As of this writing, I have not yet taken the exam and can't comment on the author's ability to cover the required knowledge areas.The advertised online exam material and practice exams are not available - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK if you want to use the online exams to practice. The publisher stated that this is a 2013 published book and while the book was released early, the online content and exams are not yet available through their website. The publisher includes an access code and website, although the content is not available when you attempt to use it. I spoke with Cengage and the customer service is poor.There are now multiple books published on this subject and I would recommend trying one of those - as I stated, the content is vague and there is no online practice exams or content as advertised by the authors and publisher.Best of luck....UPDATE 08/28/12:I took and passed the CompTIA+ HIT-001 Exam today. If you are intending on purchasing this book for this exam, please review Appendix A as it has the exam objectives outlined nicely. There is additional information in this book that is not covered on the exam and will distract from the core objectives needed for the exam.

The e-book not only came without an access code for the online assessments, but the book doesn't have the answers to the review questions ANYWHERE in the book. I assume the answers to the review questions are in the online assessment. The review questions are nice and go over some information on the exam, but there's no way to verify if you're correct or not without the access code. The e-book was more expensive than the print version as well. Seeing as how this is the only book that provides the amount of information the HIT-001 requires, you would be shooting yourself in the foot if you don't get the print version.

Great overview, excellent compendium of a broad field. I have no need of taking the certification so I cannot speak to its efficacy for that purpose; however I have passed a number of certain with CompTIA and they always provide enough info. For anyone entering the field laterally from IT or the health side, this is a great primer.

The book has good information but a major component of the book is not available. The online practice test are not available. I contacted Cengage who then refer me to Certblaster. Certblaster support sent me an access code for the wrong Health IT exam. They don't have content at all for CompTia HIT-001. It is very unfortunate that what they are advertising is not actually there.

I took the Healthcare IT test 3 times and failed each time because the information that I needed to pass the test just wasn't available. Someone told me about this book by Mark Ciampa, so I ordered it. After studying for two weeks with this new material, I was able to finally pass the test! If you are looking to pass, you WILL need this book. It is everything you need to know!

I read this book many times, and I learned it thoroughly.I have worked in healthcare IT for 7 years.Having said that, I did pass the exam but it was very close. The only reason I passed this exam, I believe was due to my work experience. Do not use this book as your only reference to write the HIT exam.I feel this book left out about 15% of material that was covered on the actual test. I wrote and passed this test earlier today.

This is a great starter book for anyone wanting to practice the oldest religion known to mankind. As a High Priestess I fully recommend this book for anyone looking for answers.

I only have the theoretical interest in this subject and this was quite an interesting read. I've chosen this book because it said "Wicca for beginners" and that's actually what I was looking for. It's always exciting to learn something new and to try to understand the beliefs and lifestyles of the others.

I absolutely loved reading this book I got it last Thursday and just finished it tonight (Monday). It was so interesting and well written. There were so many educational things in this book and reading it made me feel like I was gaining knowledge of my own free will. It’s like it didn’t have this extremist tone that would scare someone away, it was warm and inviting, like the universal energies of the world! Lovely book! I will have my family read it so they can gain some knowledge. I would totally recommend it for beginners and just anyone who’s curious about this form of spirituality.

How I could understand ever aspect of the book. She explained it perfectly and also stated make it your own where applicable! It wasn't so dictated it was understandable to someone who has very little knowledge. But still very informative and given guidelines. I've read 6 books so far this book by far is the best one. With information,historical,religion, guidelines,knowledge, judgment, do's/don't, how to,where,set up,tools, very informative!
