The brave new world the authors refer to is the scary new world of biomedical technologies and breakthroughs. While the new biotech offers much promise, it also raises many ethical and social concerns. In this volume two Christian authors advise readers on how to think biblically and morally about the new technologies.Thus issues such as human cloning, stem cell research, genetic engineering, eugenics, designer babies, and cybernetics are closely examined.The pair are well placed to discuss these topics. Joni is well known as a speaker and writer who has learned to cope with her quadriplegia. Nearly 40 years ago she was confined to a wheel chair after a diving accident. She could easily be tempted to grasp at the hype and hoopla promised by such things as embryonic stem cell research, but is aware that any potential cures must be ethically achieved.And Nigel Cameron is a long standing expert on bioethics issues, and author of the important 1991 book, The New Medicine. Together they help us think ethically about where the new biomedicine and technologies are taking us.As mentioned, there are a lot of promises being made about how cures derived from embryonic stem cells (ESCs) may soon help people like Joni walk again, and help many other people with various diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While Joni would of course love to be able to walk again, she realizes that ESCs are not the way to go. This is because ethical medicine must take priority in such cases. Killing a embryo to obtain its stem cells is not how we show respect and dignity to members of the human race.Killing some to possibly save others is not good medicine, and it is not morally acceptable. Plus, as the authors show, adult stem cell research is already resulting in numerous human cures, while ESCs have not yet led to even one.This book does not simply give an academic case against some of the destructive new technologies, but features case studies and personal stories of many people suffering various infirmities and diseases. Joni herself of course provides a human face as to how ethical medicine can be pursued.While the media is wont to focus on emotive stories of people suffering, such as the late Christopher Reeve, and call for such ethically dubious science as ESC research, they seldom feature others who equally are suffering, but refuse to go down the path of technologies that do not respect human dignity and personhood.Thus this book shows how we can not only think rightly about the new biotech world, but how we can act rightly as well. A very helpful resource for those wanting an introduction to this brave new world.

Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic co-authors this book with ethicist Cameron. It is written to awaken ordinary Christians to the ethical questions raised by IVF, cloning and other bio tech developments. The authors seek to base their ethics in Scripture but not all who share their views on the authority of the Bible will share all their conclusions, but they do raise the contemporary questions and encourage Christians to be involved in the contemporary debates. Their history of early last century eugenics programmes nm the USA is horrifying as it was the precursor to what was done in Nazi Germany. It is a stern waring against human cloning and the manipulation of life from the embryo.

This book made me think about ethical choices and the consequences of what are becoming routine procedures. I appreciate the authors deep respect for life, willingness to acknowledge common interests with those who share a different worldview, and their willingness to challenge us by clearly stating what they think is right. It is hard to be neutral after hearing their story.

This is a dense, detailed, intense examination of the Reformation. I had to read it several semesters ago for a class and it still sticks in my mind as a prime example of why historians should not write history books. They know so much about the topic at hand that they suffer from being unable to distill it all for a general audience, and get bogged down in asides and pieces of stories only to pick up those threads so much farther down the road that the reader has long forgotten where that particular thread first got pulled.There IS some fascinating stuff in here, but this is not for the weak-hearted or casual, uncommitted reader. Pull up a chair, cancel all other social obligations, and expect to stay for at least several weeks. As a reference text, it is invaluable - there is gold in "them thare pages," and plenty of detail to understand how the Reformation began, proceeded, and influenced. But this is an academic work, not something that would appeal to a more general audience (which is why it is 4 star instead of 5).

Lots of detail about one of the most important periods in European history. It really opened my eyes to a large part of American culture that resulted from the particular brands of Protestantism that made it over here (though the treatment of early American protestantism is not really covered except in a quick overview). For example -- what are the different roots of the White and Black southern protestantisms? Why did those rather extreme Scottish (+ Scots-Irish) Presbyterians have such an influence over the US? He devotes equal weight to the Counter-Reformation -- so any of you who are Catholic or were raised in that religion would benefit from understanding the roots of "modern" Catholicism. Confessionals? Catechism? All counter-reformational. That said, I do wish he had an editor. Some parts just go into too much detail, and he lose the narrative thread. Someone else remarked that this is about the trees not the forest, and that is only partly true. The overarching themes of Reformation as Humanism, of the meaning of the Eucharist, of challenges and rebuffs to Papal authority do create a certain unity. But as you are diverted through the Transylvanian reformation, and the Polish-Lithuanian reformation, etc. --- while interesting in their own right -- it is easy to lose track of the the larger picture. I do wish the 30 years war had been covered in more detail, but that may be asking too much from an already 700 pp. tome.

I've just finished reading this and I already know that I'll be returning to it for reference and probably rereading sections as well. There is just so much history wrapped up in this single volume that it would be impossible to remember or understand all of it in one read.MacCullouch does a fine job of balancing the views and actions of Catholics and all the versions of Protestants that arose from the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. The core of the argument between these two varieties of Christianity is whether the Bible should be the go-to guide (Protestant) or whether the Church's teachings are of primary importance (Catholic). Of course, like all human endeavors, religion, politics, economics, art, and personality cults all play their role in history.This is an area of history that I've generally avoided, as my area of interest is nineteenth-century England and technology. But when I realized that I wasn't understanding some social issues because their roots lie in the Reformation, I signed up for a graduate-level Renaissance and Reformation class. MacCullouch's book is one of several on the reading list, but the only one aimed at the Reformation.At first glance, this 708-page text (plus notes, bibliography, and index) looks overwhelming, especially if you have to read it in a short amount of time, such as in a class. But I found the professor's writing style to be very clear and it wasn't a chore to read the book. I had so many "aha!" moments when reading this book I can't begin to list them here.Some other reviewers have complained that this single book cannot span the historical and intellectual range of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and they're right. No single book or author could accomplish that. But what MacCullouch has done is to write a very readable single volume that introduces many of the themes of that history. He does not focus on a single individual, although some, such as Luther, were certainly very important in the history of the Reformation and are mentioned much more than once. That is to be expected, but it doesn't detract from the quality of the material, and it doesn't mean that MacCullouch never writes about anyone else. He does.What perhaps was most helpful to me was the last chapter, which summed up some of the current-day arguments over religious beliefs, both in America and Europe, and pointed out how they are just ongoing examples of what amounts to a continuation of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. If you have any curiosity about this era or want to understand the breach between Catholicism and Protestantism, this book is an excellent first choice. Just be forewarned that, while this book is not exceedingly difficult, neither is it a "dummies" book, and you should come to it knowing a little history in order to get the most out of it. Don't be put off by the sheer size of the book.

This book is scholarly, witty, and fascinating. MacCulloch has taken a subject full of controversy and oversize individuals and made the book a page turner. There are no heroes in this book, only blood, guts, executions, trials, and internicene hatreds.The horrors of the Inquisition are shown not to be the sole purview of the Catholics--after all, Calvin burned Servetus at the stake for disagreeing with him about the Trinity, and he beheaded a few others for various reasons. The author's sense of humor is always present--he tells us that the reformers liked to sport long beards so that they would resemble Old Testament patriarchs, and then he introduces two pictures of reformers with cascading, curly beards covering their chests. He teases the reader with the puzzle of who wrote the Reformation hymn "Faith of our Fathers" and the answer will astonish you. MacCulloch was a high Anglican, but he deals with the controversies of the Reformation in an even-handed manner. At the end he reminds us that the Reformation stretched from 1517 to 1700, and Europeans were at peace for only thirty of those years. At the end, the borders had moved, but Catholics were still Catholics and Protestants were still Protestant, although very heterogeneous. This book is that rare thing--an exciting history book.

About the Author

DON RICHARDSON, the bestselling author of Peace Child, Eternity in Their Hearts, and Heaven Wins, has been studying the Muslim world for more than 30 years. He and his late wife, Carol, spent 15 years among the Sawi, a Stone Age tribe of Irian Jaya. Excellent work here. As relevant now as it was upon first publication.A common misconception is that people of tribal nations/areas are totally lost without the Gospel, fumbling around in darkness. Wrong! "He has also set eternity in their heart" (Ecc. 3:11); "God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us" (Acts 17:27). The book presents powerful evidence that monotheism is the first stage of religious development among people groups, not polytheism or animism. Monotheism then degenerates into polytheism etc., due to various reasons, e.g., manipulations of people in ruling positions. Therefore this book runs counter to the evolutionary models such study of religion holds as orthodox. As such, this book is startling to anyone who takes it seriously and grew up in Western public educations systems (where we are taught the evolutionary models only).The book is not a "deep theological treatise." It is rather a thesis predicated on evidence from anthropology, sociology, the study of religion, and Scriptural exegesis. Of course it is richly theological, but it does not get "theologically complex," or dense.As for a criticism: The book does not explore so much about how it is the Spirit of God moving these people to reach out and find God. People are not prepared for the Gospel on their own doing, but rather through the Spirit. However, this theme is in fact found within the book! As a personal opinion, I simply would have liked to see it emphasized. As I said, the book is not a theological treatise; it does not get lost in complex debate—so it is not surprising that we do not find, for example, a chapter on "The Work of the Spirit."Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!

It is astounding to see the background data added to the inspiring histories. I hear many "supposed" tales of God's actions but to have them so clearly and convincingly authenticated is great. This is a work I shall be referring to many times over. Due to "loaning" it out a few times, I actually think this may be the 5th or 6th copy I have now purchased. It is one that MUST be in our library. When my wife discovered we no longer have a copy she said, "Get one!". So of course, I did. His work in Peace Child is equally amazing.

A paradigm busting premise. It will change the way one religiously sees the world. Could the most ancient religious belief of all cultures, tribes, and tongues have been monotheism, complete with a name for the One True God? If so, then Jesus is a Man for all Seasons, one who points to every culture's most ancient and cherished relationship. I'd heard about the "sky-god" phenomenon in anthropology classes and in anthropological films, but it's usually mentioned in passing. However, the implications are stunning. Turns out that anthropology and archeology's commitment to the idea that man progressed from animism to polytheism to monotheism to atheism may need to be revisited.

Don Richardson has put a piece of the puzzle together that I knew existed but did not have the background information and missionary experience as he does. Having enjoyed both of his previous books "Lords of the Earth" and "Peace Child", Don pieces together the witness that God has left of Himself in the hearts of mankind throughout their history and cultures. Like a detective who detects the voice of God in the various tribes and cultures, that have existed on earth for ages, within their very own historic beliefs. Don gives to us the clues he has found that points everyman to God, no matter when or where he was born. Don is not promoting Universalism but rather a God who is big enough and loving enough to show this world that He has not left Himself without a witness, even within their own historic beliefs. I love and agree with the premise of this book of a general revelation of the Light of the world through the Order of Melchizedek, and a specific revelation of Christ through the Hebrew lineage. The process of the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham to be a blessing to the nations is a beautifully orchestrated concurrence of the broad revelation--that leaves it footprints in the folklore of many tribes--with the specific revelation of the gospel of Christ delivered to these tribes by the sent ones. The stories that divulge the evidence of this are remarkable. They moreover debunk erroneous theories of the development of religion while demonstrating folklore gives evidence of an initial monotheistic concept. Don Richardson presents his case in a wonderfully engaging style that utilizes colorful documented missionary stories. He then sums up by demonstrating the clear occurrences of the focus to the nations throughout the New Testament. There is good reason this book has a broad and enduring audience.

This was an amazing read on the interpretations of the indestructible tablets of Thoth. If you are studying the ancient world, then I suggest this as a must read for insight of Atlantean life. My only criticism is this: It's 2015. Humanity wants to evolve. Just publish the last tablets. We who are seeking are ready to see it. Otherwise, a very important unfinished book to read.

I have not finished the book yet but the very idea of this fascinates me beyond belief and anyone that wants to understand the beginning of time past the bible and all the religious beliefs in the world made by man and not the Gods of today should read this book and many others about it.I have little time for my own personal readings because I am in school but when I pick up this book it is magical.

This is a great overview of the development of Warfare in North America and a detailed analysis of early special operations actions in the Revolutionary war. Well written and documented

Very interesting presentation of a few extraordinary men who took on the challenge and help win the war against the powerful British army and Navy. Tactics developed by these independent thinkers are still valid today. Once again an incredible recount of impossible determination to achieve a goal with minimum resources.

Tonsetic's military background does show and while he is truly an excellent story-teller, his sometimes over-wrought detail of current Joint Pubs is a bit much. And coming from an old staff weenie, that is saying something. Other than that, the level of detail is just enough to provide a vivid picture - what we want from a story teller. He introduces us to players and events that are often overlooked in so many histories, yet provide a much needed understanding of the of the overall American (rebel) campaign, and the fact that even today special forces are indeed "special."Tonsetic does deserve a better publisher/editor, however. While the writing is excellent, some of the obvious typos look a lot like some of my drafts - missed punctuation, missing capitalization, etc. Once or twice it is not an issue, but in some sections it was almost a distraction (I'm a staff weenie ...). Perhaps those issues are unique to the Kindle version I read, though I doubt it. That is my rationale for 4 vice 5 stars.

It is nice to see a book on the American Revolution that flows well. Tonsetic picks out great examples of what would be called Special Ops today. I finished the book having a well-painted picture of the events, leaders and soldiers that helped secure American independence from Great Britain. I am an avid student of history and this book did not disappoint.I visited Ticonderoga, Crown Point and Lake Champlain recently (and live only miles from the Saratoga Battlefield in New York) and this book really gave life to many of the leaders of the Patriot cause. They were well sourced and researched.All that said... The best feature of this book is that it is easy to read and avoids the over dense citations that become a major pitfall of many historical texts. I did not find myself falling asleep in the middle of a chapter, but would stop when I hit the end of it. Since I read mostly at night, that is the sign of an engaging work.I did finish the book looking for more, which was a good sign.If you liked the movie The Patriot, he tells the back story of Francis Marion and southern campaign of the Revolution (the movie was not exactly historically accurate, but some of the characters are based on real people). It is a good historical backdrop for all the Hollywood drama.He also gives us insight into the struggle between the American Colonists who supported independence and those who wanted to remain part of Great Britain. This is so overlooked in many history books. Colonists were fighting neighbors, not just the British.Overall a very good book. I am glad I waited for the order to be filled.

Already a history buff, I learned some new stories about our earliest secret military ops. The author proves the point that general Washington was fond of secret attacks and spycraft. Small secret militia units doing very dangerous work can and did change history.

.... some of the situations described really don’t qualify as “special operations” per se. However, the author’s enthusiasm for the subject is obvious and the storied well told.Warning: any proofreading done on this book is very painfully undetectable.

Well written and contains a lot of background information not normally found in works about the Revolutionary period. For students of the subject, I recommend it.
