When my husband and I were discussing books to get before our son was born, he said we needed to have this book as he remembers his father reading the stories to him as a child. I ordered it as part of our "25 Days of Books" Christmas tradition. It was the first book we opened and my husband loved sharing the stories with our son. The book arrived in perfect quality. I love the style of writing an the pictures as well.

I don't recall of reading any other Brer Rabbit stories before, although I definitely recall hearing 'em told. My m-in-l was from rural Louisiana and was born near the turn of the century (abt. 1902). She used to tell some of the Brer Rabbit stories, but they were told in the "old style" from her birth area. I do like this book, both the writing and the art ... and would be interested in looking at more some time.

beautiful quality. i love the stories, but the art makes it even better. nice little stories to read out loud. i don't have any kids but i read them to my mom haha.

Love these stories! It is great to see an updated version. The illustrations are beautiful, and my kids (6, 4 and 2 1/2) love reading about the crazy antics of Brer Rabbit. We have read and re-read this many times. I only wish there were more stories.

Love the illustrations and retelling of these stories. I just wish the editor had caught more typos and misspelled words. I've found at least 5 in a 40 page book.

As with his earlier book "Jihad," author Ahmed Rashid illustrates his unbounded knowledge of Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, along withe the relevant players in all the local terrorist groups, including the Taliban. Rashid, whose fluid, conversational style resembles that of Thomas Friedman ("From Beirut to Jerusalem," "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" and "The World is Flat" among others) expertly weaves the group's history in context with the war against the Soviets and, later, the entrance of the United States military into Afghanistan.My only problem with the book (in this case the updated 2nd edition) is the 17th and final chapter, which ruins a lot of what Rashid had written up to that juncture.Cases in point:• Throughout the book there are many references and anecdotes of days in which hundreds and even thousands are killed in a single day during the repressive, Sharia-driven Taliban's merciless rule. Yet he waxes on about a day in which nine U.S. soldiers are killed and 15 wounded in a day in 2008, when more than 150,000 troops were in country. Not a tragic loss in proportion to the troops involved and when compared to the days before they came to the country.• The same catastrophic verbiage is used when the U.S. troops, who had "surged" in order to engage more Taliban fighters, lost 91 troops in two months in 2008. Not unexpected casualties considering what was at stake.• Rashid goes on a Monday-morning quarterback orgy, fault-finding just about everything to do with the U.S., while never once — not a single time — showing how things had improved in comparison to when the Taliban ruled. He runs on and on about IEDs — as if they were winning the conflict for the Taliban — rather than illustrating the basic reasons, tactical and otherwise, that were holding back victory.• Rashid's solution? "A vast new social and economic development program" as a long-term answer to the problems in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Pakistan. Not too abstract or non-specific, right?• Rashid never addresses why any country in its right mind would want to invest in offer military aid to a country like Afghanistan, whose troops shot U.S soldiers in the back, or ran, or didn't fight, or weren't double agents.• No mention at all of the ridiculously restrictive rules of engagement that prevented U.S. troops from doing something as simple as undertaking night raids because they might upset the Afghanis, who Rashid never bothered to mention hate the U.S. troops and aided the Taliban.• While it was addressed, the fact that the Pakistanis refused to take massive action against the Taliban and whined about the few times U.S. troops and drones (which were never mentioned) attempted to do something about the porous border, which sheltered the Taliban and prevented U.S. victory.• Afghanistan President Harmid Karzai, while correctly portrayed as corrupt, was never called on the carpet for his endless harangues against the U.S. for inevitable collateral damage while it tried to help his country. Nor was it ever mentioned that Karzai never even thanked the U.S. for its sacrifice.And yet countries should want to throw money at and rebuild Afghanistan?I could go on and on and on, but my point is made. It really is essential reading — and good writing until the final chapter. I'm going to read his "Descent Into Chaos" book next, though I have reservations that it will be a longer version of U.S. fault-finding. Still, the payoff is in the presentation of the history of the Central Asian countries and their peoples, and even Islam. Rashid is the best-informed writer extant on these topics. It's a must-read.

Ahmed Rashid has written the gold standard of books on the Taliban. He charts the rise of Al Qaeda from the Soviet war in Afghanistan to Afghan civil war, to a ruling government of sorts until after September 11th 2001. That alone would be impressive, but Rashid goes a step further by detailing the economic and security impacts the Taliban movement has had on the regional and global environment.No one from Afghan warlords to United States Presidents comes across as a choirboy in the rise of the Taliban or even as soon as they took power. What really comes across is that Afghanistan has been a train-wreck for decades and that history should be ignored by policy makers at their own risk. Afghanistan isn’t just some isolated corner of the map, but as Afghanistan’s problems are starting to leak into other countries like Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and other former Soviet Republics, Iran, and even the United States.Although Rashid has added a 2000-2009 section on the Taliban’s reemergence, some readers may want to know his thoughts on the post 2009 period try his 2013 release Pakistan on the Brink, but this is still a great backgrounder on the complicated land of Afghanistan.

I purchased this book for class, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually interesting. Rashid is a Pakistani journalist, and he researched this book for ten years by actually interviewing the Taliban and the other people of Afghanistan. Intermixed with solid historical data and easy-to-understand descriptions of Afghan life following the Soviet withdrawal, we read specific quotes from Taliban leaders, offering insight that most westerners are unable to find elsewhere.While this book is factual and a good read, I must admit that Rashid is not unbiased. He offers several solutions throughout the book for how various Afghan crises could have been prevented, and he seems to feel that the US bears a large portion of the responsibility for them. Nevertheless, he backs up his opinions with facts, so even if you don't agree with him, you can respect his reasoning.One final comment regarding the updated edition--Rashid initially wrote this book before 9/11, and the first edition ends in 1999/2000. When the book was updated, Rashid made the choice to keep the first edition intact, and add a last chapter discussing the events since then. While I can respect his decision here, I think it affects the timeliness of the book, and many of the first edition chapters would benefit from incorporating this new information, rather than waiting for the end. You get the information either way, but in my opinion, it would read better.Overall, I find it to be an in-depth and enlightening read.

Through it all, Sofya, is determined to first, keep her family intact - and second, somehow to reach her friend, Eliza. At the same time, Eliza is making plans to leave her family in safe hands and find her friend. It was not easy to put this book down for any length of time. It accounted for some very late nights! The novel is beautifully written, and although we move back and forth between Eliza, her family, and Sofya and hers, we are able to maintain the threads that connect it all.Highly recommended. I haven’t read The Lilac Girls, which inspired this prequel - but I have it on order!

This is a well-researched and well-written novel that alternates among three women during the time of the Russian Revolution. Two of the characters, Sofya, an aristocrat, and Varinka, a peasant with connections to the Red Army, while at first friendly, became enmeshed in an emotional intrigue, that kept me engaged throughout the book. While it is clear that the Tsar and others were ruthless in their treatment of the common people, concerned about only their own luxuries and comforts, it is also clear that the revolutionaries were just as ruthless, killing violently and taking whatever they pleased as though they were entitled. I could not help but wonder why so many innocent blood was shed. The action in this book keeps it moving with lots of suspense, the only respite being the passages that take place in America, centering on the third main character, Eliza Ferriday, who works to send aid to the white Russians and find her friend Sofya and her son. I highly recommend this to readers of historical fiction.

“Lost Roses”, a sort of “prequel” to the bestseller, “Lilac Girls”, by Martha Hall Kelly, is a story of three women during the First World War, (specifically the Russian Revolution) set in Russia, America, and Paris. There are three alternating first-person points of view; Eliza, an American heiress, her best friend Sofya, a relation to the Tsar, and Varinka, a Russian peasant girl who has taken something precious from Sofya. I wish these character’s narratives were more easily distinguishable.The story moves in fits and starts; sometimes enfolding slowly and sometimes jumping ahead as much as a year. Basically it deals with how these three women are related, their war time experiences, and how they will be ultimately reunited. I’m guessing that if you loved “Lilac Girls”, you’ll love this as well. A third novel in the series is in work.Nit: Cover Art: I was confused by the anachronistic clothes worn by the two female figures on the cover. They are not dressed in the styles of the WWI era, which is when the majority of the novel takes place. We are admonished not to judge a book by its cover, but why be misleading?I highly recommend “The Winter Soldier”, by Daniel Mason, for a wonderfully rich and suspenseful novel about WWI.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, you will like “Lost Roses” by Martha Hall Kelly. The setting is around the turn of the century just prior to World War I. The novel is placed in a number of locations, most notably New York, Paris, and Russia.This is a slow starter, so be prepared to give the novel some time to develop. However, once the plot gets your attention, you will want to stay with it right to the end.

This is the story of three women whose lives intersect in 1914 to 1940 in New York, Paris, and Russia. . Eliza and Varinka start on the opposite sides in Russia, a cousin to the Tzar and a barely surviving pheasant. They do things they might never imagine surviving the horrors of the time. While Sofya in New York suffers in a different way from loss and exclusion. She does what she can from afar to help her friend Eliza and all who are suffering.This is excellent historical fiction. It finds the right balance of story, fact, and education. The author’s note at the end describing what was real made everything come alive more.It didn’t become a page turner till about 2/3 of the way through. Maybe because I haven’t read The Lilac Girls and it took longer than I would have liked to understand the relationships. The prologue and epilogue were written in Luba’s voice, Sofya’s younger sister, everything else was written from one of the women’s point of view.

I loved "Lilac Girls" so much. I was actually nervous about reading this one because I expected to be disappointed. It can't be easy to follow up one well-received and beloved novel with a second, right? Well, I was 100% the opposite of disappointed. I started reading it at 10 p.m. and was still going strong at 2 a.m. I found it captivating from the first page. I was so sad to get to the end. The characters are incredibly compelling and even though some pretty unbelievable things happen, it all just works. Among my favorite novel settings is Russia during the time of Tsar Nicholas, so this book was incredibly fulfilling.I am also 100% convinced that this can be a standalone novel. I believe it could be read before or after Lilac Girls. This author does an amazing job at making subtle connections between her first book and this one. Again, it just works.I am excited that her next book will be set during the Civil War - same family of course. That's just absolutely perfect.

I just finished reading this book and I loved it. The information is relevant nd concise my two favorite methods for genealogy books. I knew about some of the frugal ways, but many were new to me. Even better is the description of the site and it's value to a genealogist. The offers at the end are awesome and one covers the cost of the book. Thank you Thomas.

I have been searching our family line for forty years. I have never thought of taking a serious look at ways to save money while researching. This booklet is very helpful, and contains common-sense tips for being a smart consumer. It also includes discounts on genealogy items. If I had bought this booklet a week ago, I would have saved ten dollars on a DNA test I just bought. Great source.

Well worth reading and implementing the ideas Thomas MacEntee proposes in this book. He adds practical matters not just common cliches. Much of what he recommends is geared to the online world, but all the tips in the book are practical. Give this one a try, even if you've been researching your genealogy for umpteen years. I thought this book would offer all the ideas I'd gleaned already but Thomas has come up with new ones. Well-worth the price!

Thomas does it again--provides the best common sense advice for anyone who does genealogy. And it's not just for the professional genealogists, it's for the beginners who want (and need!) practical advice. Thanks again, Thomas!!!!

I found this ebook to be very helpful. Thomas has provided many hints and suggestions and some information about some free stuff. Sure you might already know about some of the hints, I did, but some he mentions I totally had forgotten about, or he puts a different spin on it. The price is good, it is a fast read and information about free stuff, you can not go wrong.

There is an extensive list of money saving ideas and options. It also has a list of things not to do. This would be a great book for anyone obsessed with genealogy, but can’t afford to spend big chunks of money on it.

Mostly common sense, if you have been doing genealogy for any length of time. Suggestions like obtaining birth, marriage, death certificates when possible, check census records, etc. It might very well be helpful for a newbie.

This book has so many great ideas to save money on most anything genealogy. I just reupped with Ancestry.com, if I'd read this book first I would have saved a lot of money. Next year😉
