Review

"Iliza is a fearless comedian because she is a fearless woman... She sees deeply, she thinks deeply, and she feels deeply . . [F]ind yourself in the pages of this book. Your hurt, your fear, and your loneliness will be remedied time and again with the laughter and the wisdom of a woman who will teach you to fight for your self-identification as a warrior and your destiny as a woman."―Mayim Bialik, star of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" and NYT bestselling author of "Girling Up!""'Iliza not only has a way with words, she also has an observational intensity that pushes those words into your brain with comedic fury."―Marc Maron, comedian, actor, author, and host of the popular podcast WTF with Marc Maron"Iliza is funny, fierce, and lightning fast, but don't let all that wit and beauty fool you - she's a feminist with the heart of a mommy, a truth teller who just wants us all to feel better so we can get what we want, dammit! She's thought long and hard about why women are so hard on themselves, and she's not afraid to say she's been there herself, which has endeared her already to millions of fans. Take my advice: take her advice. Iliza is a comedian wrapped in social critic wrapped in the good friend you need."―Robbie Myers, Editor-in-Chief ELLE Magazine"Iliza Shlesinger's brand of feminist comedy is quick, smart and doesn't suffer fools . . . [Girl Logic] is a call for women to celebrate themselves."―Los Angeles Times"The takeaway messages of the book are important: cultivate confidence, develop the courage to be different, refuse catty competition with other women."―Kirkus Reviews"Hilarious."―Star Magazine"The stand-up comic expertly explores the 'secret genius of irrational behavior' in this irreverent and insightful collection."―InTouch Magazine

Confession time: I have loved Iliza Shlesinger's standup since I accidentally stumbled across it while binging Netflix. Since then, I have spent a slightly unhealthy amount of time watching her standup and shows. Because I live under a rock (clearly), I hadn't realized she had published a book, but the moment I did, I bought it. No regrets. Girl Logic is funny, witty, insightful, and just real, in the most terrifying and crazy sense of the word.In Girl Logic, Shlesinger attempts to make sense of the confusing, frustrating, and often contradictory life experience that is being female. From dating to looks to life pursuits, she covers it all. The book exhibits a lot of the snarky humor that Shlesinger is known for in her standup, but more than that, it calls on women to realize that it's okay to just be them. It's inspirational and thought-provoking about the things that matter most in life while still being wickedly funny. In some of the best parts of the book, Shlesinger shares her own anecdotes and life experiences, from struggling with being an outsider growing up, to trying to be happy with the way she looks, to finding a place as a female comic in a world of men. In Girl Logic, Shlesinger celebrates the things that make women, well, women—admitting that they can be confusing and be deterrents, at times, but they don't have to be.While Girl Logic is obviously geared towards women (duh, it's in the title), there's a lot that men can get out of it, too. In fact, a lot of the advice, while written from the perspective of a woman, is applicable to any gender. The struggles Shlesinger faces are ones many people face, and while she speaks from the perspective she is familiar with, I believe anyone could enjoy this book and find something relatable and positive from the experience. All in all, this book definitely delivered on laughs, inspiration, and some very real moments that made it a very enjoyable read. Would definitely recommend this.

If you follow Iliza you know she has a lot to say. She’s obviously beyond hilarious but personally, I feel like a lot of that has to do with the level of her intelligence & the fact that she pays attention to others, the world around her & (obviously) interaction between men & women, women & women & all other relationships. This book is a bit of a self-help type of book for all women, all people out there & anyone who is willing to pay attention to relationships. It also shows how we can learn to understand one another. What makes this book special is that she does so with very little criticism of anyone. It’s brilliantly written, very funny & done with a level of intuition that seems to be nearly impossible to achieve when writing to & for people who you do not personally know. I found myself wanting to pick it up & read it as often as I could possibly find the time. I pre-ordered, so I had no time to read reviews or wait to see what people thought of it, I just assumed she would have some insight into how we all feel, believe & interact with one another. I’m happy to say that that is exactly the kind of book this is. Iliza is every bit as good a writer as I thought she would be. You can’t write to her level of comedy without being an excellent writer all around & she definitely nailed it! The last pages of the book contain some of the best writing I’ve ever read & sums everything up beautifully. Magnificently done!

This book is everything I had hoped for and more! Iliza did a really great job balancing humor and what she was trying to say. I have been a fan of hers for a while and was a bit hesitant on buying this because I wasn't sure how she would be able to make me laugh the same way her stand up comedy does. I was not disappointed at any point. For this being her first book, I am impressed. You can tell a lot of thought went into the book. It is not just joke after joke after joke it's Iliza being herself in a very real way talking about things with hints of humor as she went along. I hope she writes another book because this was genius. It is not just aimed at women it is something men can also read and get a laugh out of it. Great job Iliza!

Iliza is a well known hilarious, brilliant comedian who has several Netflix specials, a TV show and now a book. This book had me literally laughing out loud and tears streaming down my face. I can almost hear her voice speaking, doing a stand up in the pages of the book. She tackles many topics that so many people don't want to speak out loud about. I appreciate her taking the stand and being open and honest it is refreshing and as usual entertaining ☺️

I literally was laughing out loud at so many parts, that I was crying. Iliza is so wonderfully self deprecating while allowing us to feel the self respect and confidence she holds. I guess that’s her Girl Logic, paradoxical, witty, charming and smart! I find it touching that she speaks to younger girls too in a manner that, with all her absurdity and comedic views, she can be somewhat of a role model. Her style of writing is as if she’s talking right there in front of you! I thought this wouldn’t be my genre or for my age group (& being so evolved & spiritually aware), but I am thoroughly enjoying this gem! She’s a delight!!!

Iliza is truly one of the greats! You may not agree with everything about her but you can't deny that her comedy is pure freaking gold! Buy this book, read it, laugh, and be happy.Iliza, if you see this, know that you bring laughter into my heart and soul when the days are bad, good, and anything else in between. I remember when I was first introduced to your Netflix special, War Paint. I was home on leave visiting a good friend of mine after my first deployment. We laughed so hard! It was a great way to keep my mind busy and spend quality time with someone I hold close to my heart. Thank you for being you! Stay awesome and I can't wait for the day I can make it to a show!

"With great skill, scholarship, and penetrating Scriptural insights, Carl Gallups explodes one of the biggest bombshells of our lifetime. The implications of these astonishing declarations from the most venerated ultra-orthodox rabbi in Israel impacts every one of us--not just those of the traditional Jewish faith. This is a must-read for anyone who takes God seriously." -- Bestselling author Chuck Missler

"Carl is a master communicator, both orally and in writing. And he has a gift of being able to provide biblical interpretations to contemporary national and international issues. This book is completely different from his first one (THE MAGIC MAN IN THE SKY). It reads more like a mystery novel. Carl was in the field of law enforcement for ten years before he entered the ministry, and his training as an investigator clearly shows up in this book as he applies investigative techniques to analyze one of the most explosive events in the modern history of Orthodox Judaism. So, get ready to be captivated by the story of an event that recently shook the foundations of Orthodox Judaism. Based on the information on the cover and inside flap, I expected an account of a rabbi who had a Damascus road experience. Unfortunately, this book ended with the same unanswered questions it posed at its beginning. I was very disappointed. At the most, this information warranted a magazine article.

OK. I was surprised by his practices and fear of telling his findings. He is correct about Yeshua as the Messiah.

A very well written book. It is a book for those seeking more information about the end times or those looking for a better understanding of what they have already learned. If you are looking for a book to read for pleasure this book is not your cup of tea. I can highly recommend this book. To the author a "Well Done!"

Good read. I once memorized the 23 Psalm because of its beauty, but I didn't know the 22nd Psalm was so important. Haven't finished reading yet. LATER: Just finished. Still worth five stars.

Unfortunately, the author writes with historical triumphal point of you of Christianity trumps Judaism. It is not helpful with outreach to the Jewish people at all.

EVERY CHRISTIAN OR SOMEONE SEARCHING FOR CHRIST SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

Great book

This book gives to much personal opinion of the author and I wish he would concentrate more on the message of the Rabbi and the results of that message on the Jewish community. Too much background story is given that is unnecessary.

Review

"Politics and personalities blend with an immersive setting and beautiful prose in a debut that weaves threads of identity, assimilation, technology, and culture to offer an exceedingly well-done sf political thriller."―Library Journal, starred review"A Memory Called Empire perfectly balances action and intrigue with matters of empire and identity. All around brilliant space opera, I absolutely love it."―Ann Leckie, author of Ancillary Justice"In A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine smuggles you into her interstellar diplomatic pouch, and takes you on the most thrilling ride ever. This book has everything I love: identity crises, unlikely romance, complicated politics, and cunning adventurers. Super-fun, and ultra-fascinating."―Charlie Jane Anders, author of All the Birds in the Sky“An elegant and accomplished example of the subgenre of subtle scheming with a background of stars. A delightful read. I couldn’t put it down.”―Jo Walton, Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of Among Others“A taut murder mystery entwined with questions of technological ethics, A Memory Called Empire is also an evocative depiction of foreignness. Martine creates an elaborate and appealing culture against which to play out this story of political intrigue, assimilation, and resistance. Daring, beautiful, immersive, and often profound.”―Malka Older, author of Infomocracy“A Memory Called Empire is a murder mystery wrapped up in a political space opera, and deeply immerses the reader in a unique culture and society. I very much enjoyed it and look forward to what Martine does next.”―Martha Wells, author of The Murderbot Diaries“A Memory Called Empire elevates space opera to poetry―clever, deep, sometimes tragic, sometimes violent, always transcendent poetry that shines like the edge of a knife.”―Delilah Dawson“An intricate, layered tale of empire, personal ambition, political obligations and interstellar intrigue. Vivid and delightfully inventive.”―Aliette de Bodard, Nebula Award-winning author of the Xuya Universe stories and The House of Binding Thorns “A cutting, beautiful, human adventure about cultural exchange, identity, and intrigue. The best SF novel I’ve read in the last five years.”―Yoon Ha Lee, author of the Machineries of Empire trilogy“An exceptional first novel recommended for fans of Cherryh, Leckie, Banks, and Asimov.”―Elizabeth Bear, author of Hammered"A Memory Called Empire . . . is so frigging good. It's like a space opera murder mystery combined with all the political parts of Dune."―Dan Wells, author of I Am Not a Serial Killer

The different ways language allows concepts, one needs to look at 6 sides of the idea/thought to be sure it works. The way allowing a memory from your predecessor assists in following the set procedure, and needs to be controlled.

Mahit has just landed her dream job---ambassador from the tiny Lsel Mining Station to the Teixcalaanli Empire! Mahit has studied and admired the Texicalaanli culture her whole life, but nonetheless she is somewhat awed by her new responsibility. Fortunately, she carries a secret asset, an imago, an implanted integrated copy of her predecessor’s memory housed in her neural system and a small ceramic and metal machine attached to her brainstem. Unfortunately, Mahit’s imago is fifteen years old, so she has no record of her predecessor’s experiences for the past fifteen years, including whatever experience led the Teixcalaanlitzlim to request that Lsel send a new ambassador. Mahit arrives to find her predecessor, Yskandr, dead under mysterious circumstances and Teixcalaan on the brink of both civil unrest and a war of conquest that could endanger the liberty of her own people. Mahit has to learn the ropes quickly and try to identify friend (if any) from foe and protect Lsel. In order to do that, though, she must first stay alive!Writeups classify this book as “space opera”, and it fits this genre in a very good way! Unlike a great deal of SF space opera today, though, A Memory Called Empire does not substitute battle scenes for world-building and imagination. The story is replete with political intrigue and outright treachery in a complex ruling structure. I was not at all surprised to learn that the author is a historian of the Byzantine Empire. My favorite part of the future laid out in the book, though, is imagos. Author Arkady Martine explores craftfully what it might be like to have another memory inside your own, a memory that was matched to be compatible with your own personality but that is, nonetheless, not you.Martine has built a vast interstellar empire, peopled it with political schemers of the first order, and told a rousing tale of the far future. What’s not to like? Not much, but this IS a debut novel, and the writing could use a little polish, especially in a tendency to overdo some of the gimmickry. For example, names in Teixcalaan are in two parts. The first is a number, and the second is usually (but not always) a plant. So, for example, we have Eight Antidote and Eleven Conifer and Twelve Azalea and others. It is impossible to keep the names straight. Thank heaven for the handy Glossary of Persons, Places, and Objects at the back of the book, or I might have thrown in the towel (and the book). This could be a more serious problem for many “readers” like my husband who listen to audio books. I also feel sorry for the book narrators who will have to stumble over what I consider unnecessarily complicated place names and words like Bardzravand and yaotlek. At its best, though, A Memory Called Empire reminds me of Bujold and Asimov, good rousing classic SF. SF has found a talented new voice, and I look forward to her next book.My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance review copy of this book.

This book follows the adventures of Mahit, who is a young woman who is chosen to replace the Ambassador of their Station in the Teixcalaan Empire. Her predecessor died unexpectedly, and so she wasn’t given all the preparation that she could have had, and gets sent almost immediately. You see, what the Empire doesn’t know is that people from the Lsel Station have some forbidden neurological implants. They have the memories and personality of their predecessor implanted in their brain as preparation for this sort of thing, somewhat as an AI. Another personality that they meld with over time. While Mahit does have the memories of the prior Teixcalaan Ambassador, Yskandr in her head… he’s about fifteen years out of date. And when they arrive and face his corpse, he disappears from her brainspace entirely. So she is left to navigate the often-complicated Teixcalaan culture with only her Teixcaalanli liaison to help, while simultaneously figuring out who almost-certainly-murdered the previous Ambassador, and preventing the ever-expanding Teixcalaan Empire from moving right in to the Lsel Station.I really liked Mahit as a character, and I thought she was easy to root for. She’s a little foul-mouthed (internally, anyway), a little sarcastic, and a little snarky at times, and those are three things are what I liked the most about her. I didn’t know what I could expect from the Teixcalaan characters, because this story starts out thrusting you into this sort of imperial culture which is quite different from anything I’ve ever known, and I expected they were going to be very uppity and stodgy, considering that most of their culture is rooted around poetry and verse. That said, I ended up really liking a few of the Teixcalaan characters, most notably Three Seagrass, her liaison, and Twelve Azalea, her courtier friend. Reed and Petal. Twelve Azalea especially was all of the foul-mouthed, flagrantly rebellious sidekick that I could hope for.The mystery that unfolds during this story was also really well plotted out. The intrigue that comes from the imperial court of a very, very large empire blended into the mystery and the story quite well. This was a wonderfully unique idea, and the Teixcalaan culture was very well thought out and executed well. There were twists and turns that I didn’t at all see coming, and I had some feels at times that I wasn’t expecting either. I thought in the very beginning that I might have bitten off more than I could chew and that it was going to be confusing with all the number/noun names and verse and what have you but it wasn’t at all confusing, and I quite liked how easy it was to read while still having some lovely prose and imagery. And so, I went into this book expecting a really hard sci-fi space opera that I was going to like… but have to work a bit to like (in a I-have-to-pay-attention-to-details sort of way, to be clear that this is not a detriment, lol), and what I got was a really interesting story that was easy to read, and easy to like, with characters that were also easy to like. It gave me a vaguely Foundation-like vibe at times, while still being modern-feeling and fun. Thanks to the author and Tor via NetGalley for the review copy. :)

“Evie Shockley burns up the page with her new collection…. semiautomatic is a 21st century survival guide, fierce and full of compassion.”—Diana Whitney, San Francisco Chronicle“[N]otable not only for the way it navigates questions of identity & politics, but for the variety & virtuosity of its use of form.” —Robert Archambeau, The Hudson Review“...semiautomatic grapples with the violent imprint America has made upon black bodies through the ages.”—Tracy K. Smith, The New York Times, “Political Poetry Is Hot Again. The Poet Laureate Explores Why, and How” “Ablaze with wordplay and formal ingenuity, Shockley's poems chronicle the horrors of the 21st century while igniting the imagination as an act of hope.”—John McMurtrie, San Francisco Chronicle, “Year in review: The best books of 2018”

Review

"Evie Shockley suggests that poetry is necessary to seeing, surviving with equilibrium and wholeness in this period's vital and precarious junctures. The poems in semiautomatic are on fire. This will make an excellent source book of poetic form and historically grounded black aesthetics for the classroom." ―Erica Hunt, Long Island University"Evie Shockley's semiautomatic goes beyond mere weaponry. This book is revelatory. A tool in the chest of cultural workers, a vocabulary that resists decoration; this is self-portraiture and truth-telling at its best. From her epic 'the topsy suite' to her one-acts (a new form), through her fearless lens and appropriation of authorities, there's no level of denial or proof-vest that will protect you from Shockley's poetry. You can run, Reader, but you will not be able to look the other way." ―Willie Perdomo, author of The Essential Hits of Shorty Bon Bon"This is an extraordinary, wonderful book. Evie Shockley is a great black poet. I know she might not put it that way, and sees all of what's problematic in my putting it that way. Her greatness is in that, too. She makes revolution irresistible just like she heard we should." ―Fred Moten, author of The Little Edges"There is no keener mind in American poetry than Shockley's, with her quick turns and inflections, slipping between subjectivity and documentary, between verse and refrain. Her poems engage―politically, formally, historically, profoundly―with the redistribution of power through language. Read this book and get shook." ―D. A. Powell

I would like to say that Evie Shockley’s work has communicated a sense of assurance and pride, as so many critics have exclaimed. Sadly, I would be lying through my teeth if I confirmed such communication. On the contrary, “Semiautomatic” seemed to siphon the notion of civil communication from my psyche, temporarily reducing me to a soulless husk until I put the book down.On the rare instances when the book doesn’t read like the schizophrenic ramblings of a cortisol-addicted madwoman, I can glean a malformed expression of hatred through the incomprehensible experimentation of how to read and speak English. I wish I could determine exactly WHAT Shockley hates so much, but the specifics seem to have been lost as soon as her words hit paper. Then again, I may need to apply Hanlon’s Razor at this point.Between horrendous attempts at addressing the concepts and points of race, sexuality, and identity, Shockley gives wonderful examples of what to never do when writing. Namely, using the English language not as a means of internal expression, but as a means to projectile vomit half-baked political schmaltz onto the face of an unsuspecting reader. This culminates in my conclusion that “Semiautomatic” teeters between being a sloppy try at propaganda and not being literature at all.In addition to the cacophonous mess of her chosen themes, I am convinced that Shockley failed to proofread her poems. The capitalization scheme varies wildly from scribbling to scribbling, and the formatting choices frequently interfere with understanding the text. Also worth stating: The Nutrition Facts label is NOT an effective format for a poem, and the description of the nutritional information of a two-year-old girl is innately disturbing. This book made me withdraw from my Creative Writing minor at the last semester because not even a 3 credit class requirement is worth putting a mind through this sort of unspeakable debasement of literature. The book will be re-gifted to some acquaintances of mine who are in dire need of something to read, as well as something to put coffee cups on.

listening to the author read her poems moved me. I bought the kindle version after Evie started tearing up reading a poem from section 3. In section 4 she has presented a fragmented poem that is pulling from singers, artists, and old works about a hero's journey. The poems are layered. They have emotions obvious to people that can directly relate to the struggle in the poem's theme and apparent upon a little research or analysis.

Inventive, formally innovative poetry.

Amazon knows this, so for some Kindles, it hijacks that style, changing its formatting to what Amazon prefers. This can lead, for example, to unwanted space above or below a paragraph. If you want control of your own formatting, then, you'll have to avoid the Normal style and apply something different. There's no problem, though, with applying styles based on Normal, or even with applying a duplicate of Normal under a completely different name. In regard to this, watch out for manual page breaks in recent versions of Word. Unless you're in Compatibility Mode, each break is now placed in a paragraph of its own, and the Normal style is assigned automatically. That in itself isn't a problem -- but if you then hit Return and start typing, your new paragraph will be in Normal as well. (This is another reason to stick to the paragraph format setting "Page break before" to start a new page.) You can change all paragraphs already in Normal style to a different one by using the Format menu in the Find and Replace dialog. Don't enter any text, but place your cursor in first the Find box and then the Replace while choosing a style for each. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #2 To save you some grief, I'll warn you right now that testing your Go To menu items may not do you much good. For example, due to numerous bugs, they are unlikely to work right or at all in files generated or even just viewed with Amazon's desktop Kindle Previewer. Your best bet is to test on a hardware Kindle with a preview copy converted on the Amazon KDP site. But even if you get everything to test perfectly, it may mean nothing, because Amazon KDP staff may manually change the "start" location after publication. Yes, they may simply move it where they think it should be, and without telling you! (As far-fetched as this sounds, it is not speculation. KDP staff will confirm this themselves, if you ask them -- as I have.) The only way to know if this has happened is to get a copy after the book has gone on sale. If you discover a change at that point, all you can do is ask KDP staff to change it back -- in the hope they'll comply -- or else send the book through again -- in the hope it will be treated better the next time. But on the Kindle as in life, there are no guarantees. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #3 There's a great deal of confusion about Kindle tables of contents, and for good reason: There are actually two different kinds, and a Kindle book may have one, both, or neither. (Try to get Amazon to explain that to you!) The first kind is an HTML table of contents, also called embedded, internal, or inline. When you export to HMTL, Word will generate one from a linked table of contents you've constructed on a page of your source document. Creating that table in Word is the subject of this section, while the next one tells how to get a link to your table of contents from the Kindle's Go To menu. The HTML table of contents is the only kind you can export from Word. The second kind is an NCX table of contents, also called logical. NCX stands for "navigation control file for XML" or such, and it is a special type of file included in ebooks. The NCX file can be used to place content items like chapter headings directly onto the Kindle's Go To menu as a shortcut for readers. It can also set jump points for Kindles with physical navigation controllers. While an NCX table of contents is a nice convenience, you don't really need one, as long as you have the HTML table. But besides that, there is no way to generate an NCX table with Word alone. Creating the NCX file requires special ebook software or hand-building in HTML -- well beyond the scope of this book. So, if you're trying to keep things simple, I suggest you forget about NCX tables of contents. There's another reason you might want to ignore them: In late 2013, Amazon has been adding an NCX table of contents automatically to at least some books submitted without one. Chapter headings and other phrases might now be added to the Go To menu some time after publication -- not just by the time the book goes on sale!  If you see such items in the menu for this book, that's how they got there. Â

One of Aaron's earlier books, Aiming at Amazon: The NEW Business of Self Publishing, or How to Publish Your Books with Print on Demand and Online Book Marketing on Amazon.com, was essential when I was graduating from being published by traditional publishers to being independently published by Create Space. That's been a huge success. I've never looked back. Now that I'm converting some of my older books to Kindle format, and writing new books specifically for Kindle, I knew I should see what Aaron says about that. I was correct, and the price of this Kindle book was a pleasant surprise, as well.I've found four major points that I'd overlooked when submitting earlier books to Kindle. Those books could have looked much better, and I may go back and reformat them following Aaron's advice. I'm not sure, yet.Though I'm on the fence about spaces between paragraphs in Kindle books -- frankly, I find it easier to read with the breaks -- I found several other formatting issues that I hadn't thought about before, and each of them is very important.Even if you're pretty sure that you know what you're doing with Kindle books, it's worth spending $1 to be absolutely sure. If you're like me, you'll be very glad that you did.I rarely give any book a five-star review, but this one comes close enough that I wish Amazon offered us a four-and-a-half-star option.

Version reviewed: 3.3.1, © 2011-2014.This weekend, I finally bit the bullet and accepted Aaron’s last bit of advice: place the table of contents (TOC) first. I hated to do this in a classic edition, but it was the only way I could get Amazon to set the Start Reading Location (SRL) close to where I wanted it to be: Don Quijote 1 & 2: Español - English (Spanish Edition)At this point, I don’t know if my relocation of the TOC took or not. As Aaron points out in his book, once you buy a copy of your own book, you can’t see what additional changes look like. You have to ask Amazon to replace your previous copy with your current copy. (If there are imperfections in my display or formatting, I can always blame Amazon for not letting me control them, but the most likely reality is that it’s my own fault for not following Aaron’s instructions to the letter.)Anyway, I can’t say enough good things about Aaron’s book. You can look at my book if you’d like to see the ~80% effectiveness of his recommendations for publishing using ONLY his MS Word edits, and not doing anything in HTML. I found his HTML book a bit beyond my reach. I found his MS Word edits to be easy to follow and delivering as promised in terms of left justification, style formats, and line spacing. All of these were extremely important to me since I was working with separate fonts for two languages, reduced fonts for chapter summaries, and hyperlinks all over the place to keep it together. If I have any criticism of Aaron’s book, it’s of the author himself. He seems to rejoice more in complaining than fixing the problem. The problem is Amazon’s one-size-fits-all approach to text justification and SRL. The solution is finding the right person in Amazon to bring up his (our) concerns. Surely Amazon is smart enough to offer the publisher a choice in how the text is displayed and starting location for reading when the book is first opened. The much touted ‘Enhanced Typesetting’ is Amazon’s solution to the small screen size offered by most reading devices. By forcing justification to both margins, large spacing between words is a given if the reader enlarges the text. Personally, I haven’t found this to be a problem in romance novels or mysteries--the two bestselling categories in Amazon. It is a major problem for books like mine, where there are lots of large words, which makes for serious space distortions if I were forced to use the ‘Enhanced Typesetting’. (The real solution would be left-justification with hyphenation for the most common words, but this is a functionality that’s beyond us at this point.)But using Aaron’s guidance, I could left justify through the whole book. You can do the same and more if you read “From Word to Kindle”. Hopefully someone at Amazon will be smart enough to bring Aaron on board as a consultant. He’s that good. His sense of independence and perfectionism may not allow for this, but it would certainly be my recommendation. (PS - the guidance put out by KDP is basic, out-of-date, and Microsoftesque in being technically correct but totally useless. Aaron on board, and this problem goes away.)All in all, this is a great book for guidance on formatting for Amazon. It’s the only book that I needed. Look no further if you want to publish an eBook.[BTW, I came across a book this week that opens on the title page--the logical location for beginning any book:Mountain Conquests . Don’t know how they did it, but it shows that it is possible to set a SRL. But as Aaron points out in his book, you’ll drive yourself crazy if you look for perfection in eBooks. So letting my book go as is...]So why only 3 stars. Three stars so that someone may actually read this review. Any more than that, and this review will taken as spam.

This book answered the questions I had in an intelligent, well-written way and was my companion as I published my first important Kindle book. If you don't care that much how your book looks on the kindle, this isn't the book for you. But if you have a book that needs to be published so that it looks professional and doesn't have rookie formatting errors messing up the flow, Aaron Shepard's book is a good one.I will add that this was NOT the only book I bought on how to format for kindle. This was actually my third. But the other two were so full of grammatical errors, typos and translation issues and missing some essential information, I had to turn to a third book to solve the spacing issues I was having. I wish I would have started with this one.
