The way the book was going I thought I would be okay and not cry. I WAS WRONG!The main character is Jeff, he wakes up in the psych ward and finds out he's going to be there for a bit of time. He tried to kill himself, but we don't find out until the end of the book why. I had a love/like relationship with Jeff, at times he would say things that got on my nerves but don't we wall do that?I loved Sadie, she is a fellow inmate with Jeff and a few others. I enjoyed all of the characters. I loved little Martha, I felt so, so bad for her upon reading her story.Jeff is a pretty comical dude. He says a lot of crazy stuff and he calls his Dr. , Cat Poop. His real name is Dr. Katzrupus. I would stick with Cat Poop. Some of Jeff's random thoughts:**There are five of us. In the fun house, I mean. Well, five kids. There are a bunch of adult whack-jobs, too, but they have their own ward. We get our very own Baby Nuthouse all to ourselves. It's just like at Thanksgiving, when all the kids get sent to the little table in the corner. No turkey legs for us. Just the parts no one else wants. Like giblets.••••••"You're telling the people at my school that I'm here?" I said. I was already imagining Principal Matthews giving the morning announcement. "Today's lunch will be spaghetti and meatballs, cheerleading tryouts will be held second period in the gym, and Jeff is in the nuthouse."**But there are so many things going on with Jeff. He won't talk about it to anyone. He won't talk about it in group or with the doctor. He slowly hints at things to Sadie over time. They are really good friends in there.Jeff has to come to accept himself and his sexuality and not let them get to him. With the help from family and his doctor he just might get through all of this. I really wish people were more accepting of people.**I've been thinking about that ever since. Am I lucky? Am I lucky that I didn't die? Am I lucky that, compared to the other kids here, my life doesn't seem so bad? Maybe I am, but I have to say, I don't feel lucky. For one thing, I'm stuck in this pit. And just because your life isn't as awful as someone else's, that doesn't mean it doesn't suck. You can't compare how you feel to the way other people feel. It just doesn't work. What might look like the perfect life---or even an okay life---to you might not be so okay for the person living it.**No truer words have been said. I can totally relate to Jeff in certain ways as I have some of the same mental issues. I thought this was a really good book.

This was a story that I didn't expect to fall in love with. As a survivor of suicide loss, this is a very touchy subject for me. It was written so well that I honestly found myself invested in these characters! Masterfully done and poignant, a beautiful reminder that we may all have our demons to fight, but life is worth the battle! If you or someone you know if feeling suicidal, please get help! There has been a ton of progress in treatment, and it is not shameful! You are beautiful and your life is worth living! 💜

There are too many kids in the world who choose Jeff's path, succumbing to the temptation of suicide at 15, confused about relationships, sexuality, and their place in the world. SUICIDE NOTES is a love note to those kids by author, Michael Thomas Ford, who offers a resounding message of hope in depicting one boy's journey of self-discovery.But what's marvelous about SUICIDE NOTES is the universality of Jeff's feelings. More kids than not don't attempt suicide, suffering silently instead, worrying about disappointing parents, failing to measure up, being abandoned by friends, and never fitting in. I worried about all those things. SUICIDE NOTES was a look back, suggesting how far I've come, and a reminder that, when doubts still occur, they can be viewed as invitations to once again look inside and discover a bit more.Craig Bennett Hallenstein is author of THE DOLPHIN, a psychological thriller set in New Orleans.

Suicide Notes was a read forced upon me for a YA lit course I'm taking this semester at NCSU. I have never been so happy about an assigned reading in my life. This read was sooo fast, I read all 300 pages in two nights, but had I not had an early morning class the next day, I could have easily done it in one night. Four hours is my total investment in the book, I forced myself to quit reading on day one just so I could have something to look forward to the next day. It is a must read! This book first off is not intended for super young kids (I'd recommend anyone in high school or college is probably the best audience). There is a bit of language (5+ uses of "f" and a few "gd" and a few others). Another thing to keep in mind is the subject matter is dark, being about a kid who attempted to commit suicide. The basic storyline is kid wakes up in a hospital's psyc ward, but doesn't think he belongs (despite having wrist slashes to say otherwise). Every chapter is another day of his 45 day sentence as he has daily sessions in therapy and begins to develop relationships with the four or five kids with him. Through these kids, Jeff is able to learn from his mistake and begin thinking about making some healthy changes in his life and working through some feelings that every teen has from time to time. This read is so important, and should be required for students 9th grade or above, simply because Michael somehow manages to get in almost every theme you can think of in reference to dealing with life as a growing teen. He talks about substance abuse, suicidal tendencies, sexual awakenings and trying to find one's identity, all major issues in today's teens. This book is powerful and hits home especially if you have a friend who is facing suicidal thoughts, or trying to find themselves. Heck, maybe you're trying to find yourself, and this book will help you see that things have a way to work out in the end with a little perseverance. It is a book that starts off sort of dark, but then develops into something very emotional and witty. Ford did a fantastic job, because even if you don't identify with Jeff, you will find some theme somewhere in this book that hits home, there are so many, heck I could easily name 10 right here but some may be spoilers so I won't. Anyway, if you're going through a hard time, read it, it will pick you up. If you have a friend going through something, read it, it will help shed light on things. Also, if your a teenager in general, read it to understand that there are other people going through the same phase you are and find themselves completely lost like every teen feels at some point. Or maybe you're like myself and are a 21 year old kid who just loves a easy read that you actually walk away from feeling inspired. No matter who you are, there is something in this book you can get out.READ THIS BOOK! I didn't want to read it but after I did, I'm putting it in my top 10 :) (this is significant considering I read at least one novel a week)

I've got 100+ hours pouring over braiding of various types. My one complaint is most of his tips are nice features that could be used on any of the whips & should all be listed in the appendix. My praises for the book:Ron Edwards often lists more than two methods of achieving the goal (easiest, alternative, historical). He adds insights to why things go wrong & how to correct themHe is not a purist in the whip philosophy, he gives it in a short burst of extremely useful ideas & then follows it up with the best pictures I've seen in any book or on the internet.A quick listing for people who have no idea what they are buying ...Table of contentsPages: 14 - 43 Beginner whip of 4 strings/strands/plaits - the base for the rest of the whipsPages: 43 - 84 Kangaroo stock whipsPages: 89 - 96 Bull whipsPages: 97 - 104 Snake whipsPages: 100-130 Handle decoratingPages: 131-141 Letter's and words decorating handlesPages: 143-154 Random tipsPages: 155-160 Appendix

If you want to know the step-by-step mechanics to making all sorts of Australian-construction whips, from rough and tumble working whips to making fine pieces of supersonic art, this is THE BOOK, and has been for many years. This, along with the late, great David Morgan's "Whips and Whip Making" (which is really more a fantastic history and overview of HOW they're made, not actually HOW to make them, as Edwards' book is,) and "Braiding Fine Leather" provide excellent foundations to get started, regardless if you're working in the more traditional leather or nylon paracord. There are also some great e-books out there, and some fantastic tutorials on YouTube, etc. etc. and they are a great resource as well, but Edwards book provides a core set of techniques and tips that are invaluable.

When you are deployed you don't have a lot of time off, but the time off you do have there is nothing to do, and so I decide to pick up a hobby.I bought this book and had it shipped to me in Afghanistan along with some odds and ends to get my hobby on. This book was so much more than I expected; the title really does say it all though. If you want to know how to make a bull whip, stock whip, aussie whip, or snake whip this book does it. Beginning to end, step by step. Selecting your hide, trimming it, cutting braiding it, he makes it so simple. there pictures on just about every page if not every single page. Its not purely instructional he makes it interesting, short antidotal stories, but not so much as to make it long or loose the info you want. Great glossary/index at the end. Just a fantastic book I couldn't praise it enough.,

This book contains everything you need to make whips. If you start with raw hide or para cord this thing will teach you what to do. The illustrations are awesome and the text is as good as it gets. This is the only book you need to make any whip you want.

This is a very detailed book and has hand drawn examples of how to make whips. They have a large verity of styles and uses for whips. If you want to make whips its a good book to have on hand.

Better than average, but not a lot of details that you need to get started.

For learning how to make whips out of leather, this book is pretty much the first to buy. There are a couple minor differences with the book vs. what most people do--Edward's use of kerosene or neatsfoot oil in plaiting soap is one, most persons online don't recommend that--but overall this shows "the way it is done" and with the proper materials will allow you to roughly duplicate any professional whip you might find (-you won't duplicate the level of *craftsmanship* of a professional-made whip very easily, but you will be able to do the correct cutting, braiding and the more-common types of knotting-).It does not say much about the techniques of making nylon whips, so if that is your primary goal there may be another better book out there.

Good read

The King's Daughter is the cute version of les filles de roi experience, the Pippi Longstocking-Betsey Tacy-Laura Ingalls take on events. The natives are not always portrayed in the best light, which is too bad, because the writer could have really developed a few of the native characters we see though the story. She does however touch on what it means to be a woman, married, unmarried, during this period and how this affects the protagonists agency and personhood, which I really appreciated. Sometimes the 70's missed a few things, sometimes they got more right than current works are doing. Overall a well-told story, with likable characters. If you want a darker, academically researched novel about another fictional fille de roi, try the Bride of France.

This is an excellent story. I often use the original French version with college students and purchased the translation as a gift for a friend. Anyone who would like to know more about what life could be like for the "King's daughters" ("Les Filles du roi") who was shipped to early Québec for marriage by Louis XIV would do well to read this account.

A very enjoyable story.

This is one of my favorite books. I was completely obsessed with it for about a month, which is a record for me. It's terrific.Best for young adults ages 12-16, The King's Daughter by Suzanne Martel tells the story of Jeanne, an eighteen-year-old French orphan. She travels to Canada as a King's Daughter, passage paid by the king so that she might marry one of the settlers. By chance she is married to Simon, a young man with two children. His previous wife Aimee was killed by the Iroquios and he needed someone to look after his son and daughter. It takes time and patience, but Jeanne comes to love Simon and Simon comes to love Jeanne. They both struggle with doubts about each other throughout the book until everything is resolved at the end. There are plenty of various adventures (Jeanne travelling to the nearest settlement as a man, for example, or the risk of Iroquois attacks) which make the book very exciting. The story is touching and fun, and historical fiction buffs will love it, as will anyone. The King's Daughter was translated from French to English, I believe. Since I cannot speak or read French, I was delighted to find an English version at my bookstore. I liked this book very, VERY MUCH and I would encourage ANYONE to buy it.

This was a good book. I have read it in both french and english and have had many english/french class discussions on it.Summary: Jeanne, orphan girl of france. She is chosen like many girls to go to New France to help populate it. These chosen girls are on a mission for france, they are suitably named "The Kings' Daughters". Jeanne marries an intense man and becomes an instant 19-year old mother taking care of her new hubby's children who she adores. Jeanne has her encounters and adventures.I found the book cliched. Jeanne is so overly cliched and her romance is a bit too. Their was little character developpment. It is obvious Martel is bias between the relations of the French and the Iroquis but she exaggerates their anger and fury a bit too much. The language is simple due to translation but if you do read the french version, the vocabulary is better. The one true thing I like about the book is that, it's interesting. The plot is just her and her adventures. She has many adventures which keeps you reading. It's modestly historically accurate. I still recommend it if you wish to be interested but it would be better for the preteens.

"The King's Daughter" was a great book, and very interesting! It told about Jeanne, a French orphan in the 1600s, who goes to New France (Canada) as a "king's daughter". That is what the French girls who went to marry the men in New France were called, and they were very important in history.Jeanne hopes to marry a kind military man, but instead marries a poor, rough hunter, and she fears that he loves his dead wife more than she. Times are hard in New France, but she continues to try to find happiness in her new home and life. This book was very exciting and interesting, and I'd recommend it for ages 10 - 14. The text is somewhat simple sometimes, however, because it was translated from French, but other than that I loved it! I would also recommend "Calico Bush", about a French girl in young America, and "A Coal Miner's Bride", a "Dear America" novel about an immigrant in an arranged marriage.

This book is a must read! it kept me interested the entire time!!! Especially if you like books about the pioneers and their struggles/joys.

I've owned this book since I was about 8, and just recently reread it for the millionth time (I am 24 now). Jeanne, the heroine, is compelling and attractive, as is her husband, Simon. Their romance is a little shallow, but this *is* a child's book. The vivid descriptions of life as a settler in Canada are wonderful, and the portrayal of interactions between the French and the native tribes is not horribly biased. The whole range of behaviour in the French, the Hurons, the Algonquins and the Iroquois is explored, with the message being that people, regardless of their skin, are individuals. All races have good and bad people. The language is somewhat stilted, as is predictable in a translation -- I should probably read it in French some day to see what I'm missing! I thoroughly recommend this book to girls ages 10 to 14.
