This is a wonderfully crafted book, that resonated so deeply with me as I was a student nurse, as a Registered Nurse in a college, here in the USA, in the 1970's. This book was written from the heart and soul of a gifted nurse. A must read for nursing students, and for those of us who trained back then. Much has changed since then as far as medications and treatments of unheard of diseases. But the heart and soul of a gifted nurse, comes from their ability to sense when something is not quite right with their patient. HURRY UP NURSE, by Dawn Brookes is a real and palpable book that brought me to the lowest of lows in loosing my first patient, to the highest of highs, when quite by accident I had to deliver a baby, all on my own, as all the delivery were full and I was alone with the mom and dad, and we had a beautiful, healthy, baby girl. I was right there though all the pages of this real book. I felt as though I were following along with Dawn as she gave her first injection, did her first post mortem care, so tenderly, and when she passed her many tests as a student. This book is a must read. You will learn, cry, and feel the pain, and laugh at all that we as nurses, past and present must go through to become that gifted nurse.Thank you , Dawn!
This is a memoir of nurse training in the UK in the late 1970’s – early 80’s. As I was a student nurse also at that time (in Ireland, but the hospital set-up and nurse training was also based on apprenticeship, had a strict pecking order and was very similar) I enjoyed this memoir very much. I revisited the stomping-ground of the Junior Nurse, the Sluice Room, once also a significant hangout of mine, and the constant to-ing and fro-ing of bedpans and urinals, the tools of the First Year’s trade. (What, no sputum mugs? Not to worry, Nurse Brookes has plenty to say about them in Hurry Up Nurse 2 which I will review separately)Dawn Brookes went into nursing because her friend suggested it, but perhaps her application was divinely inspired. She took to nursing, as she said, ‘like a duck to water.’ Of course her aptitude didn’t spare her the aching feet, the petty tyranny of Ward Sisters (the old word for Nurse Managers) the frantic rush to get patients admitted and looked after when the ward was ‘on take’, and other demands ever-present in a busy general hospital. Nursing is a hard, but rewarding profession and there is never a dull moment. Dawn takes us through the different wards she worked on, her observations of other staff are acute, especially those of surgeons which I found very amusing. But it’s her encounters with patients which often bring a tear to the eye. No nurse is perfect, and the reader will sympathise with Dawn in a moment when she learns a bitter lesson. There is plenty of humour to offset the inevitable tragedy the nurse meets on her shift, and some tragi-comedy is inevitable too. As if a nurse doesn’t have a busy enough life, there’s a social life to be had too, and Dawn’s was hectic...This is a valuable memoir, as not many nurses publish them, and a Nurse never forgets the experiences of an apprenticeship training - being dropped into the deep end of a busy hospital ward after 6-8 weeks classwork. There, with the other students, we were expected to carry 80% of the Ward workload, and hit the classrooms again every so often until we took the final Examinations. It is very different from what it is now, and these reminisces should go into the Annals. I'm grateful to Dawn Brookes for chronicling her experiences and with both humour and compassion.
Suitability of book cover: Suitable and fitting for the story content.The content type is based on personal experience and thoughtful memoirs that are retold in an easy reading narrator’s voice but with little direct speech.The language used is clean and wholesome.The level of violence is minimal if any, but this collection includes some sad stories.Readability is fairly easy.The length is moderate.The setting is accurate and believable in accordance with life and nursing studies in the 1970s in England. The style of training was also emulated by South Africans up until the early 1990s.The use of vocabulary is good and includes a few, but not too many, medical terms.The standard of punctuation is good and satisfactory.The originality and outcome of the storyline were true to life and appears to be based on a lifetime's commitment to study and career.The characters are based on realistic memoirs as told by the author.The most likeable part was seeing a relatively, young educated girl blossom into a caring person with an intellectual future.The least likeable part was that the author’s youth seemed to disappear in a whirlwind of fruitless dating, but at least she had fun.I would recommend this to readers who are interested in nursing and who enjoy hospital stories.
Written in a conversational style that makes for easy, relaxing reading, Dawn Brookes provides us with anecdote after anecdote, both funny and poignant, as she depicts her days as a young trainee nurse in Leicester in the 1970s. Dawn's honesty, sense of humour and empathetic nature, shine through as she describes the trials and tribulations (and fun!) of her rewarding profession, providing interesting insight into life on the wards of an NHS hospital in that era. The way she draws you into her life experiences, whether she is at the mercy of a formidable ward sister or comforting a dying patient, makes you feel for her, and with her, every step of the way. I have just ordered Hurry Up Nurse 2 - London Calling, and am looking forward to reading the next installment in the life of the entertaining Nurse Brookes!
