Like always, Precter's timing has been TERRIBLE! He told people to get out of the market in 2002 in the first edition of this book, just when it hit bottom!!! And kept them out for 40% upside!!Then when the market collapsed in 2008 and early 2009, Precher did NOT release any books that warned about that!!!! This man is a fraud. He will always be warning about a collapse. If you listen to him you are a fool.According to Mike Stathis.."When the Dow bottomed at 6400 in March 2009, most of these so-called experts (like Prechter) were telling investors that the stock market was headed much further down, and to stay out. With each passing month since then, they have either cautioned investors to stay out of the stock market, or else to short it. Some even told investors to take 200% leverage and short the stock market by (at least) late 2009!" [...]Prechter has been telling his sheep to short the market using 200% leverage since November! The margin costs alone for such a long short are huge. The market losses have been bigger!The only book worth reading before and after the collapse is America's Financial Apocalypse: How to Profit from the Next Great Depression written in 2006 by Mike Stathis.Unfortunately, most people still don't know about Stathis or his book (which predicted Dow Jones 6000, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would be bailed out by tax payers, real estate would fall by 35% and much more) because the author (who is an investment strategist and Wall Street professional) has been ignored and banned by the media.Check Stathis' website [...] and get your hands on everything this man writes because, as a very experienced investment professional I can tell you that he is the only man out there who knows what is going on and is willing to share it with you. And he doesn't sell stocks or gold so you know he doesn't have any bias.All of the others are frauds and morons looking to make a quick buck selling you fear, greed and terrible advice. Here is a short list of guys who many have been led to believe know what's going on. But once you check what they have said you will either see no beef and/or wrong predictions and terrible advice.Martin D. Weiss, Robert B. Reich, Peter D. Schiff, Vox Day, Robert Prechter, John A. Rubino, Dick Morris, Robert Shiller, James Turk, the list is too long to complete.The few that made predictions before the collapse didn't offer any specific advice other than to promote their gold sales. Guys like Schiff said to invest in the Euro! and China would be safe!

But I think Warren Buffett said it best..."I realized technical analysis didn't work when I turned the charts upside down and didn't get a different answer" and "If past history was all there was to the game, the richest people would be librarians."The reality of inflation or deflation will be played out - my bet is on inflation - but make your own choice. If you are convinced deflation is coming, then definitely, hoard cash so you can buy assets cheaper tomorrow. Of course you forgo the pleasure of the assets you could have purchased, and the income from investments you could have made.

The book may be interesting if you haven't read this sort of thing before, but this type of book can be summed up thus: 1.Paper assets (stocks/bonds) and tangibles (precious metals and other commodities) go up in down in opposing cycles, and no matter how much you point this out, almost no one believes the present cycle will reverse. 2.The present cycle (paper assets) has begin its reverse. Stocks/bonds have begun to tank, and tangibles have begun to climb. 3.Anyone who holds on to their paper assets will suffer terrible losses, and anyone who buys gold/silver/platinum with both hands will get rich. It is still early enough in the game such that the mainstream view is that this sort of talk is nonsense. 3.The prudent way to buy metals is to buy all three metals in bullion form plus a mutual fund that consists of non-hedged gold/silver mining stocks. 4.Don't employ margin; there will be fierce mini-bears during the metals bull market. 5.Don't trade (trying to time the ups and downs). Buy now, while metals are still a contrarian move, and don't sell until the public is as enthusiastic about metals as they were about paper three years ago. Selling too soon is s classic error, as is continuing to hold on after Time and Newsweek are covering the raging metals bull market (probably in the middle-to-late part of this decade) as cover stories. 6.Don't bother discussing this all with anyone; they won't listen now, and will climb aboard late in the bull after the easy money has already been made and will use margin and get wiped out and blame you. 7.At the peak of the metals bull, people will be piling in and ignoring (what will have become by then) knock-down bargains like General Electric and Disney and 3M. --The only thing I would add to these gloom-and-doom books is when you take your amazing precious metal profits a few years from now, better diversify internationally. Don't assume the U.S. will be the top dog thirty or forty years from now. More likely, Spanish will be the primary language here, taxes will be sky-high, and the Orient will be where the next stock market killing will be made (low taxes, low regulation, teeming masses of smart, hard-working people). Have fun and be careful, spread yourself around so you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

I bought this to use as an example for a Visual Rhetoric lecture I had to give. I found myself reading it pretty thoroughly, and actually enjoying it. Using the graphic novel as a medium for historical biography is nothing new, and given that I think teens would be some of the most likely to be interested in Che Guevera, this might be a good start for them to learn about him. The artwork is very typical of Manga, however I did find the artist's collages and larger panels to be really well done. It's relatively PG-ish, PG-13 if you factor in the war elements.

The content of the book is a marvel--I am learning a lot and being entertained in the process. The printing, unfortunately, is the most abysmal I've seen from a major publisher with many pages barely readable through the gray smears and stippling, as shown in the photo. I tried to warn the publisher but was unable to make contact. Anyway, I've decided that I can live with this inconvenience since I am unlikely to do anything more than read it once, but if it were a gift for someone or a "trophy book," I would have been forced to return it. It is not acceptable.

spoiler alert: Plants know and perceive more than people assume. They can "see" and "hear" and "remember" - but differently than humans. This book rocked my mind and I think about my garden and houseplants and the trees on my walks in a new way. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars -- despite excellent research, this book lingers on points and the writing can get long-winded for us non-scientists. I mean, if I was a biologist, perhaps it would be just right. But for the average reader, expect to have to really focus in some of the more drawn-out science-y parts. Keep your laptop handy, you might need to look up science words. I had to. Overall though, 100% work the work for the info presented!

This book contains a surprising amount of great information in just 159 pages. This would be a good gift choice to spur further interest in the field for both children and young adults. I'm not suggesting that this is by any means geared towards children, but rather the manner in which the information is presented will engage all ages.

Plants are profoundly different from animals but both share many of the same problems; they both have to survive in a somewhat hostile world, they both have to take in nourishment, expel waste and try to keep from being eaten. This fascinating little book explores the inner life of plants and how they address the Darwinian forces that surround them. The sun provides life giving light for the plant and the plant, for its part, must find ways of capturing that light for use; it grows toward the light, it manufactures food from the light through photosynthesis, add to that the plant must recognize the changing of the seasons and the cycle of night and day. But does the plant actually "see" the light? Does it "feel" the touch of an insect on its leaves? Does it "smell" any of the aromas that surround it? These issues and many others are addressed by Chamovitz in a way that's accessible to the general reader. I found the writing interesting, charming and at times a little technical, but not so technical that it becomes a problem for the reader. The author also delves into the history of Botany and our changing view of the plant life all around us. If you've ever wondered how a plant "knows" the difference between up and down, when its time flower or to shed its leaves then you might enjoy this book as much as I did. As a horticulture who is studying plant physiology, this book is an impressively well-written explanation of what kinds of sensory perceptions plants possess, with clear and simple language that does not detract from the accuracy of the science behind the concepts. I wish I could write like that. The last section on "consciousness" is interesting and somewhat poetic, which brings the book to a thoughtful and gentle close. A very quick read, but very enjoyable.

The best two popular science books I've read this year are Tim Birkhead's Bird Sense: What It's Like to Be a Bird (Walker, 2012) and Daniel Chamovitz's What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses (Scientific American, 2012). Both are models of good popular science. The authors are eminent in their fields: Birkhead teaches and does field study in and around New Zealand, Chamovitz directs the Manna Center for Plant Biosciences at Tel Aviv University. They provide solid and up to date information on cutting edge subjects; they write crisply and succinctly; they are generous in acknowledging the work of fellow scientists. (Darwin emerges -again--as a giant for his pioneering work in plant science.)Chamovitz's summary of the work in plant biology should put to rest forever the notion that plants thrive on Mozart and wilt under a dose of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, because, as he attests, the one sense plants do not have is hearing. But plants do bend toward light, Venus flytraps snap shut on bugs that land on their leaves and exceed a certain length (which means there is more meat in them), and leaves curl when touched, sense certain smells and react to them, and reorient themselves toward up and down when turned. Plants are not intelligent, Chamovitz cautions, but they are aware. Both books are a pleasure to read and the conclusions reached are intriguing.

Well written and logically presented. Very interesting to understand how plants adapt and respond to their environment. As the author points out, humans tend to interpret things using human characteristics. He concludes plants are brainless because they don't have a localized brain- like organ. Perhaps, for plants the "brain" is an organ that is distributed throughout the plant itself and not located in a specific location.

PBS did a special recently, and I wanted to read this - I will still make my donation to them, but this way I get my book & read it now, while they usually take 6 - 8 weeks to get the materials to me - 3 days beats several weeks hands down!The info in the book is really fascinating! I had learned some ot this when a student at university many moons (decades)ago, but this expands far beyond that and is simply put, amazing. I hope it makes people think about the incredible variety of life and wonder about just what defines consciousness. My partner says 'it's scary - like aliens among us.' I prefer to think that now there's no reason to distinguish between carnivore and herbivore - and I'll continue to enjoy my steak and veggies, with gratitude and respect to all the creatures who are giving me life.

The New 52 Series of comic books for Aquaman are truly spell-binding, intelligent, funny, and action-packed! A MUST READ!

Arthur Curry, AKA Aquaman, might be one the most underrated and unappreciated characters in comicdom. Or at least, he's up there. He's a character who's been around since 1941 and has felt like a B-tier character hanging out with A-tier characters in his 70+ years in comics. He wasn't always like that though. His solo series has (in my opinion) been pretty good through his comic life-span. His Silver-Age comics are pretty good (the showcase collection), the Peter David reboot Aquaman: Time and Tide lead to the serious pirate Aquaman that got a small following in Justice League and Unlimited cartoon series, Rick Veitch's slow but beautifully drawn Aquaman: The Waterbearer, Kurt Busiek's surprisingly good take with an Aquaman ringer in Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis, Vol. 1: Once and Future, and even the mid to late 70's collection Aquaman: Death of the Prince. By himself, Arthur is a reasonably established character.But then the Super Friends television show happened in 1973 and well...the stigma of Aquaman began. Since then everyone has made a joke on Arthur's behalf, in all forms of media. He's been portrayed as various things over the year like cannon fodder for the Justice League, as well as simply being the guy that can swim fast and talk to fish thanks to Super Friends. Sure he's has the occasional and decent public portrayal (Grant Morrison's JLA for example or JLA Annual #2 where he lead the group), but nothing great. So it's always felt like he's a B-list character (some would argue C-list) hanging around a league of A-listers...Until Geoff Johns 2009 event Blackest Night came about and Aquaman came back to the DC Universe as a black lantern. "Aquaman's back as a black lantern?" People thought. "Meh." But then Aquaman summons zombie sharks and kills of bunch of Atlanteans. Wait? What?! People took notice. And even Aquaman's wife, Mera got a following going due to being a main player in the event as well. And then Arthur came back to life and was a key component in the Brightest Day event. And out of all those who came back to life during that event, Arthur was probably the most popular of the bunch. Now with the New 52, Geoff Johns decides to carry on writing Arthur and his "Aquawoman" wife Mera with artist Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, to create a fresh new start on the king of the seven seas.AQUAMAN VOL 1: THE TRENCH collects issues #1-6 and see's Arthur going about his daily life as super-hero crime fighter on the sea and on land. But the world see's Arthur as "that guy that talks to fish", and so many people see him as joke. Even when Arthur stops a pack of bank robbers, they laugh at the notion of him being a threat and the police feel embarrassed to have Arthur do something they themselves could of done. While Arthur is slowly getting back into the habit of life, a species of being from the darkest depths of the ocean come to land to feast upon those in their paths. It's up to Arthur and Mera to save the day.Johns immediately talks about the criticism and perception of our worlds view of Aquaman and attacks it head on which makes for some great comedic use. Everything and anything you can think of, Johns answers it for Arthur. Does he actually talk to fish? Why eat the fish you he talks to? Why the orange colors? Does the A on the belt stand for Aquaman or Atlantis? Or how does it feel being the punch line of the joke? Johns even goes far enough to show Arthur's power set more fully then simply swimming fast. Super hearing, super strength and reflexes, and near-bullet proof skin are little details added to Arthur never quite seen before to establish Arthur really is a powerful being. Johns also shows a likable personality from Arthur that is well-tempered about how society treats him and just wanting to do what's right. All of these attributes make Aquaman stand out as powerful and likable character. And you don't have have read any past Aquaman material at all to enjoy the story.Although the book is predominantly about Aquaman, you could almost consider it a buddy book, because Mera shares quite a bit of panel time with Arthur. It's one of the main themes regarding the book is Arthur and Mera's relationship together and it's handle fairly well. Mera herself has her share of powers and attributes that we get to see are quite different from Arthur (some bad and some good). Mera gets to have an entire issue of her going solo into town to simply get supplies and you see her personality (which it too is quite comedic). Either way, the dynamics between the two is nice to see happen.Mention has to go to Ivan Reis. His art alone is amazing. Every fine detail of water and sand (!), to spash pages showing Aquaman in his shining orange outfit are stellar. You'll spend half the time looking and taking in Reis beautiful artwork. Special mention does also go for Joe Prado who does the coloring, as wall as drawing issue #6. Again, the art is stellar.Now why the 4 star review instead of 5 you say? Two things come to mind. One of which is that the Trench arc is a mere 4 issues. Actually you can argue its 3 issues and it ends very abruptly (Though I do get the feeling The Trench will come back somewhere down the line in Johns run.). And the other thing is the issues collected which I'll explain. Issue #1 deal primarily on establishing Aquaman, while issues 2-4 are the Trench arc. Then issue #5 is the prologue to the next arc, "The Others". And issue #6 is mostly a stand alone tale about Mera going into town. See the problem here? It feels sort of scattered when you look at it, as if Johns played the Trench arc very safely (which it feels like) and just wanted to get to the next arc as soon as possible. It just feels a bit incohesive.Overall though, AQUAMAN VOL 1: THE TRENCH is still a good start for this unexpected hit in the New 52. It has fabulous art and a capable writer behind it. This short volume may not be perfect, but the current team sure makes it feel like it does have it coming for it down the road. It's a new era for the king of Atlantis. And the fish jokes stop here.

_The Trench_ collects the first 6 issues of the New 52 relaunch of the title. I've followed the various _Aquaman_ series off and on for years and was extremely hopeful that Geoff Johns would offer a fresh take on the character in this first arc. He does not disappoint by much.The collection is certainly worth a read for Aquaman fans both old and new, as you don't need to know much about the character when coming to the series. However, readers expecting the pageantry and drama of fabled Atlantis (such as that found in Peter David's epic run) may be disappointed here (at least with this collection) in Johns's preference for the domestic. Also, as some reviewers have noted, we don't get much in the way of an origin story; however, Johns does present an innovative perspective on how Aquaman's powers actually work, though much of this is given in response to comments (often humorous) made within the story on how the character has been perceived in popular culture. Instead of a new origin, Johns presents bits and pieces of Aquaman's back story--there are lots of scenes of him as a child and his interaction with his dad--that further humanize the character. There is not much new material here (I think), but Johns seems reverential to what has come before. In addition, Johns does offer some original material here. We get to see a new villain/monster and hints of a mystery tied into Atlantis's past, and he gives us a new take on Mera, her own powers, and the nature of her relationship to Aquaman.

When most people think of Aquaman, they think of a pretty-boy wearing a goofy outfit who talks to fish. While it's true that all superheroes went through a period of being extremely childish and cheesy, Aquaman never really outgrew that reputation in the way that characters like Batman and Superman did. For years, Aquaman has been the subject of obscurity and is probably everyone's least favorite Justice League superhero. From a personal standpoint, I have seen some really fantastic representations of the character that are nothing like what I just described. The version of the character that appeared on SMALLVILLE was seriously badass and the version that appears in Netherrealm's INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, a one-on-one fighting game, even looks fierce as hell in addition to being a regular boss. Because of these prior experiences with the character, I went into AQUAMAN VOLUME 1 THE TRENCH (THE NEW 52) with a healthy degree of optimism and was very happy that I was not disappointed.What fans rightfully considered to be one of the lamer characters in the DC lineup has come out in THE NEW 52 with by far the strongest first volume that I personally have read. Aside from comparing it to the rest of THE NEW 52's offerings, this is just a fantastic graphic work in general. The story kicks off with Aquaman dealing with the reputation of being kind of a joke. No one on the mainland takes him seriously or even believes that his kingdom, The Lost City of Atlantis, is real. Being half human on his father's side and half atlantean on his mother's Arthur finds himself in a spot where he belongs to neither the realm of land nor the depths of the sea. He's a bit lost and only seems to be sure of two things: his love for the "mermaid" Mera, and a desire to use his powers to protect the shores along with the people and creatures that live there. Arthur's desire to help others is put to the ultimate test when a hoard of flesh eating sea-humaniods emerge from the depths and begin to harvest the human population that lives in the small seashore town in which Aquaman makes his home with Mera. The police force is at odds about letting Aquaman help, but the jilted hero takes matters into his own hands and takes on the mysterious race of monsters with Mera's help.It would be hard to say more about the specifics of the plot without ruining something, but it should THE NEW 52. I didn't feel like I was trying to catch up with anything nor was I left to guess about some of the finer details of the story. Yes, the first issues do reference Aquaman's history as a character, but only in the vaguest sense. And yes, there is certainly a sense that Aquaman has been around for a while, but the fact that nobody really seems to understand him gave me the feeling that I was meeting him for the very first time. It also helped a lot that little snippets of backstory were thrown in to help shape my image of who Arthur and Mera were before the start of this story. Some readers may be bothered to hear that there is not necessarily any tangible arch nemesis for Aquaman, but this actually worked for me. The hoard of sea monsters is genuinely terrifying and gruesome and Aquaman's struggles against them revealed some openings for a much broader threat. This is a story that is filled with as much mystery and intrigue as our real-life oceans provide and although the conclusion felt satisfying, I definitely craved more.be made abundantly clear that this was by far the best and most accessible volume that I have read inAnother big part of what made this such an absolutely unhindered delight were the fantastic main protagonists of this tale. Both Arthur and Mera were phenomenal. I loved them as individuals and was touched by their relationship as a super-powered couple. Both characters are estranged from both the land and the sea, but seem to find a home in one another. Things aren't always perfect for them though as both struggle with the fact that they are not accepted anywhere and that their intentions arenever fully understood. It felt very true to life how the general populace refers to Mera as Aquawoman rather than acknowledging her as a unique individual and how they hold fast to silly beliefs about Aquaman's powers and habits. A lot of people talk about this pair, but no one ever really seems interested in actually knowing them as ... well as people. The stark reality of this plight definitely cut a little deep for me, but this made it all the more rewarding when a select couple of humans do extend a hand of friendship to Aquaman and Mera. It's this personal angle that makes the story feel as meaningful as it does. It's the quality of the dialogue - the tender way that Mera and Aquaman touch each other - the way facial expressions are drawn - that really made me connect with these two.Lastly, there are all of the gorgeous visuals and intense action shots in this comic. I think my favorite visual piece out of the THE NEW 52 series that I have sampled is still THE FLASH VOLUME 1 MOVE FORWARD (THE NEW 52), but this one is also quite stunning and daringly takes on some very complicated shots. It also does a nice job of making the scenes on land look different from those underwater and flashbacks to the past usually have this sort of hazy quality to them to visually separate them from the current events. All in all, it is just a really good looking comic that oozes with details like the scales on Aquaman's shirt and Mera's bodysuit. Every face looks distinct and are easy to identify and then there are the gruesome monstersthat are a truly horrific image to behold. The action shots are also quite bloody and the gore is eerily realistic. It's nothing so over-the-top that it distracted from my enjoyment of the story, but rather just enough to put me on edge and worry about what might become of the heroes trying to stop the flesh-hungry beasts.I would very quickly recommend this volume to anyone who enjoys graphic works of fiction. It shines in ways that I have yet to see any other DC comic succeed and is really just a compelling work of fiction period. I am also happy to report that although I read this as a Kindle eBook, I did not experience any formatting or readability issues like I did with the digital versions of the first volumes for both THE FLASH and BATMAN. No matter who you are, it's worth giving this series a look. It requires absolutely no prior knowledge in regards to the world of superheroes and at its core it doesn't even really feel like a traditional superhero story-line. This is a series that has me pleasantly surprised and it's one I will definitely be continuing.

Rereading Chris" epic account brought back lots of memories and even more respect for his amazing accomplishment. Detractors have downplayed the firefights and claims of he and Andy Mcnab saying they embellished the event. No one however has downplayed their surviving a deadly ordeal under the worst possible circumstances. Highly recommended! RR

This book,along with Bravo 2-0,purports to be the true story of a fabled SAS mission during Gulf War One,one which ended in an escape and evasion of epic scale.Both also claim an epic body count,and blame many of their issues on one soldier,dead and unable to defend himself.I await delivery of a third book which is touted as telling the truth.Will update when I have an answer.

If you are a fan of Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab then I highly recommend that you pick this one. This is the story that Bravo Two Zero didn't go into. This is the story of raw courage and great determination as told by the one man who went through misery and hell to finish his mission. Chris Ryan's story is something that you have never read before. Use your imagination here. This man walks from Iraq to Syria after his mission falls apart during the Gulf War. Mr. Ryan covered details that I was hoping he would. His feelings during his hellish trek. His thoughts when he was hiding and came within inches of capture. The feelings of the rest of the team that also made it home and how the special operations world benefited from his experience. He also touched base on how it affected life at home. That is something that every service man faces. Thanks Chris for sharing that portion of your life. This is a book that you want to read, especially if you served in the Gulf. I put it on the shelf next to my copy of Bravo Two Zero. This is no Rambo story, so if you are looking for blood and guts look for another book. This is a story of courage and determination.

Chris Ryan's book is an inspirational piece about survival. The detractors can say what they wish, the bottom line is that this man evaded Iraqi patrols and walked across the desert into Syria with no food, little water but with the skill, courage and determination that has made the UK into a great nation.While his writing may not be the caliber of Hemmingway, Shakespeare, etc; it rings with the truth that only a memoir can have. The only book that tries to debunk it is written by an Islamic British exile who takes the word of Baathists and shepherds over decorated SAS Soldiers.Ignore the detractors, although they are few in number. Some folks can only make themselves feel big by tearing down others.I gather the majority of those writing negative reviews lack the ability to do what Chris did, let alone the equiptment! Read this book, it's an inspiration. There were many times when I was a Marine and found myself going through a rough spot and I'd draw on the knowledge that someone else had gone through what I was going through, and worse...and they made it, so could I! This book will provide that for future generations. I'd call it required reading for anyone considering a career in Spec ops!Semper Fi!

A great book for Exalted 2ed book of sorcery 4 the roll of glorious divinity gods & elementals is a cool book on the F'en elementals and ok for the gods.

Even though I think that this book should be taken as a Scroll-series and not as part of the Books of Sorcery-series, it is simply GREAT!I love all the Charms included, even though most are bizarre or seem to have no real application or a simple use, they can be adapted to several ideas and uses for specific spirits. It has dozens of charms and every special use has to be brought appart.Explanation of the genesis of spirits [elementals and gods] is good, their roles, aspects, goals and points of view are cool. Their agendas is a nice move in the Celestial Bureaucracy and the Hierarchy is also a nice explanation of their anger.Has several gods and archetypes as well as powerful entitites such as a Doomsday-dragon: the Kukla.

While I have no issue with the book itself (a great tool for Second Edition Exalted STs), buyers should be aware that some copies of this book were printed with a typo on the cover and title page such that they read "Roll of Glorious Divininty." The copy I purchased from Amazon came with this typo.I don't particularly mind, and I'm sure they'd exchange it if you wanted, but if you don't want to deal with the hassle of that, you might want to find the book in a store where you can check in advance.
