I purchased the book the day it became available on Amazon and have now read through it. I find it to be an above-average book on edible wild plants, and I've enjoyed reading it--even if he doesn't think wild strawberries are worth the time to collect. Here's what I like: The information is accurate, well-reasoned, and appears to be derived from the author's own experience. It's hard to overstate the importance of this, when so many wild food books seem to be hastily produced by publishers trying to capitalize on a trend, and authors who want to be considered experts but haven't put in the time to learn the craft and botany very thoroughly. (This was especially true from the 60's through 80's). Gary seems to have a wealth of experience based on years of foraging, and I appreciate that. The narrative sections interspersed in the text are pleasant, memorable, and often share good lessons. For the most part the photos are quite good. The selection of plants covered is also very good, I think--more so for the eastern US.The primary shortcoming of the book, in my opinion, is the brevity of its text. The description of plants, as well as how to harvest and prepare them, doesn't seem quite thorough enough to fully convey what I think most readers are searching for. I don't mean it should be pages long, but 2-5 more sentences per plant could really make a huge difference. The book is fairly thin and could have easily been made 16 or 32 pages longer and each account could have been greatly enriched. I'm guessing that Gary had plenty of info to fill out the book, and the brief descriptions was more of the publisher's decision.Overall, this is a good book that I'd recommend adding to a foraging library.

This book contains some good info on foraging, in general, and I like it because it contains some plants I haven't really seen in other books. However, the section on the plants themselves was very sparse. The author has chosen to discuss a large variety of plants, but each one has very little information on identification and the descriptions are short and vague. There aren't many photos of each plant, and I prefer visuals to assist when making an ID. This book may give you ideas on things to watch for, but you'll need another book to help you ID.

The book is larger than most (10 x 8.5), is printed on quality paper, and has a semi-hard cover. What I liked most was the quality photos which aid in plant identification. The book describes 6 different nuts, 22 different edible wild fruits, and 47 edible wild greens. What this book is lacking is details. It has very little information on what parts are edible, when to harvest, how the plant changes over its life, possible "look alike" poisonous plants, etc. I found the book to be mostly a quick reference guide with any details to be researched elsewhere. There are other books in print that are superior in my opinion, such as, Edible Wild Plants, and Samuel Thayer's books. This book was purchased to supplement my growing library of edible plants.

Bought as a gift, but I think I will be using this frequently. Interesting and information I didn't have before.

Love this book, very handy

I'm a beginning forager and was looking for a clear, easy to understand book. Gary Lincoff's book delivers on all the things I was looking for: great descriptions and most importantly terrific color photos. I looked at other foraging books, but for my money "The Joy of Foraging" really is the best that's available.

Great book! Nice to go with NYMS on walks in NY&NJ and learning from the author himself -

Informative and easy to use.

Rat Queens Volume 1: Sass & Sorcery, by Kurtis J. Wiebe

From Booklist

The Rat Queens are a tough, insouciant gang of ne’er-do-well girls (they’re certainly not ladies) who love a good bar brawl. When they are assigned a mission as punishment for their latest recklessness by the mayor of Palisade and it turns out to be a trap, Hannah, Violet, Dee, and Betty come back to the town to figure out who has it in for them and the other local fighting gangs. And if they have to beat up a few people and monsters to do it, then that’s just fine by them. Wiebe and Upchurch offer readers three-dimensional female characters with varying body types, races, sexual orientations, and backstories, while also including all the intriguing side characters, crude language, drug use, magic, violence, and sarcasm that a humorous, adult action-fantasy volume should have. Upchurch’s art has beautiful depth, and his panels glow with life. Offer this to readers tired of the same old comics featuring cheesecake depictions of female characters or to readers who like intelligent plots with a side of smart aleck. --Snow Wildsmith

Review

If you're looking for an M-rated series that is full of swordplay, sorcery, and sass, and you don't mind a bit of gore thrown in for good measure, you'll love this. Betty, Dee, Hannah, and Violet are mercenaries for hire who can drink a troll under the table, use language that would make an orc blush, and mercilessly eviscerate baddies. Off on a minor "quest" in order to make up for their drunken brawling, this kick-ass quartet soon realizes that someone or something wants them very dead. Making them dead, however, is far easier said than done. It's not just the fantastic pacing of Wiebe's (Peter Panzerfaust, Debris) text or former video game designer Upchurch's blood-sprayed action sequences, but also the characters themselves that drive the story relentlessly forward. Possessed of very different body types, personalities, and idiosyncrasies, and not afraid to share exactly what they're feeling, the Rat Queens are refreshing characters whose story will leave readers thirsty for more. 'Rat queens' follows a group of mercenaries named Betty, Dee, Violet, and Hannah as they seek to earn money, drink, do drugs, and party their way through life in classic MMORPG fashion. There's magic, sword battles, grand quests, candy, and sex jokes. Something for everyone, is what I'm saying. The humor is clearly the selling point of this series. There's nothing to say other than it's hilarious, like a good episode of 'American Dad'. But the humor can be a crutch. The series clearly doesn't want to be taken completely seriously. Outside the four main characters and the most important side characters, most people seem to be there to set up a joke and don't feel like real people. But they don't really need to be, as long as jokes keep rolling.

I loved this the first time I read it.But I don't remember it being this good.I swear I laughed on just about every page.Fantastic story. Great art.And pulling the first 2 volumes together in a single deluxe edition - I may break down and buy this. The $40 price tag may be a little steep. But this comic? It's worth it.And the additions from the original TPBs (trade paperbacks) are amazing. Braga's story is fascinating. I'd love to hear more about her. I hope she becomes a regular. Violet's Courting 101 and Betty's Monster Fighting 101 are both spectacular (and hilarious).Highly, highly recommended. (That is, if you can handle rated R subject matter.)

Compared to the original art style of Rat Queens, this special seems sloppy and lumpy - not sure why they decided to draw everything this way; the characters look rather ugly, if you're used them looking like slightly exaggerated humanoids from superhero comics. Since everyone's look (including some of the races) has already been changed for a high-tech setting, this makes it doubly hard to connect these people to the characters we know and love - I feel like I'm watching a TV show where EVERYONE has been replaced with vague look-alikes. I might have been able to roll with that, but the Rat Queens' team dynamic changed a LOT over the course of their time together, and they all grew somewhat as characters, so which version of them am I supposed to be looking for in this alternate-universe retelling? Finally, what sort of high-tech world is this? Is it really far-flung-future like Blade Runner or Johnny Mnemonic, because that's what I thought right up until a literal dragon appeared and started chasing the team. After that point, I had no clue. I might have figured it out if I read further, but this is already a mediocre action sequence between people the comic expects me to know, but who I can't really get a handle on, so I just walked away.Your mileage may vary, of course, but if you're like me, you may also have trouble connecting with such a jarringly different version of the people and places you once knew.

Rat Queens is basically HBO’s Girls meets Dungeons & Dragons, featuring a four-woman adventure group: Betty, a horny, drunken “smidgen” thief (because every fantasy world needs its hobbit analogue). Dee, an atheist, socially awkward, human cleric of Cthulhu. Hannah, a tattooed, ornery, elf mage. Violet, a hipster, dwarf fighter.Rat Queens takes place in and around Palisade, the sort of frontier town grown-up where once invaluable adventurers have become a liability. The story opens with the town adventuring parties (the Rat Queens, the Peaches, the Four Daves, and Obsidian Darkness) under fire for one property-destroying bar brawl too many. Each group is assigned a task that turns out to be a trap. The rest of Volume 1 deals with the fallout. Each of the four members has her moments, the story is intriguing enough, and the comic is genuinely funny. They’re foul-mouthed, horny, and have a distinct tendency to cause disproportionate property damage. And can drink their rival adventurers under the table as easily as they kill their enemies. They’re joined by a host of cool minor characters, from a long-suffering captain of the town watch who’s sleeping with one of the Rat Queens to the friendly rival adventurer group named the Four Daves (exactly what it says on the tin) to a villainous local merchant to one very annoying town watchman. All in all, it probably has the best combo of awesome female characters around. And it only gets better in Volume 2.

Four mercenary girls - Betty, Dee, Hannah, and Violet are sent to clean out the goblins of a surrounding town, but end up running into much more. Right out of the gate things get going. Their whole group survives the battle, but a few other groups aren’t quite as lucky. It seems that there are so many things happening and I felt a little confused as the girls try to figure out who's picking mercenaries off and how they will retaliate! It’s time for them to team up with other groups to battle a group of trolls out for revenge by the loss of one of their own from the opening scene. I’m curious to see what happens next because there was a lot was left hanging… It does have graphic language and imagery, but it’s got my attention and had me laughing often. Especially Betty! She’s my current favorite queen!!

Chapter OneClaireMy first thought is: My mother is dead. When Mrs. Shields, the school secretary, shows up so gravely in the doorway and gestures for Mrs. Otis to come over to her, I am sure that my mother has died, that I am now going to have to pack up my books and go to Sammy's school and collect him and tell him that Mom is dead and I'm all he has now and somehow we'll get by. I am so sure that something is wrong, incredibly wrong, and I can't imagine what else it could be. I am already gathering my books as Mrs. Shields whispers to Mrs. Otis. I see Mrs. Otis nod, distressed, and then Mrs. Shields disappears back into the hall. I sit up straighter, waiting for Mrs. Otis to look at me, to say my name. But instead she looks at all of us and says, "Class, a plane has hit the World Trade Center."Katie Johnson gasps. Other kids start talking.I am blank. And then Mrs. Otis asks, "Do any of you have parents working in the World Trade Center?"We look around. No. But Teresa says that Jill Breslin, who's in one of the other senior English classes, has a father who works there. I think of our apartment, only ten blocks away from the towers. I know my mother isn't home. I know she left with me and Sammy this morning and continued uptown to her office. But suddenly I'm wondering: What if she forgot something? What if she went back to the apartment? What if she took the subway down to Chambers Street, underneath the towers?I've gone from being sure she's dead to being unsure she's alive, and that's much scarier, because it almost feels rational.Mrs. Otis informed us on the first day of school that there would be no cell phone usage tolerated in class, but now it's the fifth day of school and there's nothing she can do. She's trying to hold it together, but she's as confused as we are. Cell phones are ringing, and all these kids are telling their parents they're okay, we're all okay--our school is a good thirty blocks north of the Trade Center. Abby Winter's mom starts telling her what the news is saying, and then she tells it to the rest of us: "The plane hit around the ninetieth floor. The building's still standing, and people are evacuating. Firemen are going up. The other tower looks like it's okay..."My friend Randy spots a TV in the back of the class, but when he tries it out, all we get is static. I know Randy has a phone and I ask him if I can use it. I try calling Mom's office, but nobody picks up. I leave a message on the answering machine, telling her I'm okay. The principal gets on the PA and says that all the classes have been informed of the "situation downtown," and that if there are any "concerned students," they should come to the guidance suite. We all know what he means by concerned students--he means if your parents are there. We're not a big school. There are only about seventy kids in each grade. So I can't help imagining Jill Breslin down there in the guidance office, and a few other kids. Teresa's getting frantic now, saying she has to go see Jill. And it's not even like they're best friends. Mrs. Otis tries to calm her down, saying the guidance counselors will take care of it. And I think that kind of makes sense, since the guidance counselors are adults, but it also doesn't, because even if Teresa isn't best friends with Jill, she definitely knows Jill more than any of the guidance counselors do.The thought of Jill Breslin in that guidance office makes me feel I should go to the lower school and see Sammy. I wonder if they've told the second graders what's happening, or if Mrs. Lawson is closing the blinds and giving them a spelling test.Suddenly there's this big scream from the classroom next to ours--at least ten people yelling out. Mrs. Otis goes to the door connecting her room to Mr. Baker's, and about half our class follows, so we're there when she asks what's going on. But nobody needs to answer--Mr. Baker's gotten his TV to work, and it's not one but two towers that are burning, and they're saying on the TV that there was a second plane, that the towers are under attack, and seeing it erases any premonitions I might have had, because even if I felt something was wrong, I never would have pictured this. This isn't even something I've feared, because I never knew it was a possibility. Kids are crying now, both in Mr. Baker's class and in my class, and we're looking at each other like What do we do? and the principal is on the PA again telling everyone to remain calm, which only makes it worse. It's like the principal knows something he's not telling us, and the TV is saying that people are jumping, and Teresa just loses it completely, and we're all thinking about Jill and who knows who else, and people are trying to call their parents on their cell phones, but now all the lines are busy, or maybe they've stopped working, and I don't even have a cell phone and neither does my mother. I just want to get Sammy and go home. All of our class is in Mr. Baker's room now--it's practically the whole twelfth grade. Mrs. Otis and Mr. Baker are in the front, talking to each other, and then Mrs. Otis heads to the office to see what's going on. Randy offers his phone to me again, but says it's not really working, although maybe it will work for me. It doesn't, and I don't know what else I can do, except I realize now I should've given my mom Randy's number. The TV is showing people downtown running away. I tell Randy I have to get my brother, and saying it to him makes it mean I'm going to do it.I go up to Mr. Baker and say my brother's in the lower school, in second grade, and I have to go get him. This girl Marisol hears me and says her sister's over there, too, in first grade, and is probably really scared. Mr. Baker says nobody is supposed to leave the school, but we tell him we're only going across the street, and we must sound really desperate, because he looks at us and says it's fine, as long as we come straight back.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when i purchased it other than i had read David levithan's books Everyday, and Another Day. He has this interesting writing style that is very plain and direct, not over flowery, but can put complicated emotions and concepts into simple terms to get them across. If i had to describe it in few words i say he writes poetry with plain words. This book for me explored some hard to define feelings of indirect loss. Im going to try and describe that as, when the main characters felt the absence of something that didn't directly impact there lives, and how that absence triggered a variety of emotions like anxiety, numbness, and detachment. This isn't a book that you need to curl up with a box of tissues to read. However there is a lot of observations from the main characters that gives you a lot to digest in a meaningful way.Personally, i started reading this book the night a childhood mentor of mine died of cancer (to help clear my head). Though it wasn't my intent, reading this book helped me process the complicated concept of dealing with a loss of someone that meant a lot to me though they weren't currently an active part of my life.

I remember having a conversation with a family friend a year or so after 9/11. We were talking about humanity and the good and the seriously ugly that comes out of humanity. And after we talked about some pretty ugly things, one being all the people who died on 9/11, I made a comment that quieted us both. I said (not verbatim), "Well, there wasn't a single call of vengeance or hate or anger that came from those buildings or those planes. They were all of love." I remember him pondering that for a moment and saying, "I guess humans aren't so bad after all." We lived through 9/11. We remember where we were that day. What we were doing. Who we were with. But our children and students don't. I am teaching middle school students who were born after that horrible day. They hear about the horror, but none remember it. So how do we teach them about a day we will never forget? David Levithan has the right idea with Love is the Higher Law. He talks about the people who survived that day. And you didn't have to be in the towers to be a survivor.Claire was sitting in homeroom when it happened. When she saw people bustling around and whispering to her teacher, she was scared something had happened to her mother. What she didn't expect was a tragedy that would take so many people's mothers and fathers. Jasper was sleeping. With his parents in Korea, he was using the time to indulge in late nights and later mornings and had disconnected the phone. For a family halfway around the world with their son in the middle of a terrorist attack, nothing can be scarier than him not picking up the phone. Peter is in Tower Records, picking out the next great album and day dreaming about his date that night with a cute boy named... Jasper. When he walks outside, he removes his headphones because any song he heard as he watched the second plane hit the towers would have been forever tainted by the horror he was witnessing. When the towers went down in NYC, many people died. But while many people survived, a small piece of them went down with the towers. Everything stopped in the city that never sleeps and certainly never stops. And three young adults all living very different lives found their lives intertwining and never losing sight of what their city lost: the facade of safety and imperviousness. Claire, Jasper, and Peter all survived in very different ways, but they carry the towers and what happened that day with them each and every day.The importance of this book is that it is not a dictation of facts of what happened that day. It is a personal, human story of three teenagers living through the scariest day of their lives. I think this is a story that teens today could not only relate to, but also get a better image of what happened that day. But the story doesn't stop with that day. It continues for days and years after, showing the true influence 9/11 made on those kids. What was particularly important for me was how different their reactions are. When we look at the way people deal with tragedy, we have to acknowledge the widely differing reactions and this book chronicled three of those. In particular, Jasper was unable to get it out of his mind while Peter just wanted to move on with his life. While this book wouldn't tell the whole story of what happened that day, it would be a great companion to any lesson on the subject for teens. It is very realistic and upfront about the lives of these three teens, a skill Levithan is a master at. He doesn't hide behind stereotypes and fluff, but rather delivers a story that will leave you different by the last page. This is a short story, a little over 150 pages, so it is good for an older reader who struggles to focus on longer books or as a part of a larger unit about this time period. Levithan does it again. He brings the humanity out of the shadows and into the light.

I finished this book and my first response was to tell everyone to read it. Levithan manages to tackle two complex topics-9/11 and teenage years-beautifully. I was moved by the characters and their struggles and often found myself tearing up while I was reading. My husband was surprised to see me reading this book. He remarked that I often avoid TV shows and movies that talk about 9/11; this is very true. I find the coverage of the people who died that day so sad that I try to avoid it. This book does not focus on that aspect of the day. Instead it captures what it is like for those who lived. It deals with how they got by in those first few days after the tragedy. There is something in each character that makes them relatable. While you may have not reacted the same way they did, you can understand their feelings and thoughts. All of this combined to make an honest and true story.Another thing that I liked about this story was that it focused on teens in New York City. In many ways, this tragedy affected those living in the city differently than the rest of the world. They saw things with their eyes in a way that could not be captured on film. They lived the tragedy in a way that I never will. Levithan captures all of this brilliantly and is able to convey these feelings in such a powerful way.Review: I usually find myself subconsciously skimming through passages of books while reading. With this book, I made sure to read every single word. There is so much that can be found and learned in the 176 pages of this book. A highly recommended read!

I enjoyed this book tremendously. At once scholarly and accessible, the book illuminates the lives of women in the Neolithic by creative and multidisciplinary means. A wonderful example of feminist scholarship (although I don't know what the author would make of that description!), she finds valuable information in discarded shreds of cloth, overlooked details in myths, and personal knowledge of the crafts being studied. The lives of these women come vividly to life, as well as their essential role in the development of settled communities. Her impressive breadth of knowledge allows her to support her arguments with archeological, linguistic, ethnographic evidence and more. A tremendous contribution to our understanding of human cultural development - the importance of string, for example - and the primary role of women in that development

This is a wonderful book about the history of textiles. After reading this, history will never be the same. For thousands of years, an overwhelming portion of human labor revolved around textiles. Who knew? Anyone interested in anthropology, archeology, women, or clothes will love this. It is one of those books that you can never forget.

I have the hard back copy first edition and I wanted a portable version so I purchased it for my Kindle and smartphones. This is a fantastic well written book detailing the early history of textiles and their role in history. Its interesting to read and easy to understand. This book isn't just for women but for everyone as it gives you a great understanding into the labor intensive process of early textile production.

This book was referenced in Maggie Casey's Spinning One class. I became intrigued by the question: How did textiles/cooking/home become "women's work."I snuggled up to this book and was unprepared for the scope of the book, as well as the temporal and geographic romp I would be carried into. The romp starts 30,000+ years ago.I am easily bored, and this book was so gripping I made it half way through on the first sitting. Barber manages to weave together the disciplines of Archeology, Anthropology, History and Literature into a cohesive core that does answer the question. The scope of this book is amazing.I highly recommend this book!

Elizabeth Wayland Barber is an archaeologist, linguist, textile expert, and a teacher. In this book, she will explain the "humble yet crucial" invention of string, and take you on a tour of the places and people who so brilliantly used that string "in taming the world to human will and ingenuity." Her writing is lucid and full of insight. All stated facts are backed up with extensive sources. I borrowed this book from the library and took adequate notes yet... my notes didn't capture the spirit of the writing: Barber is telling a story that she obviously loves. She brings the lives of the ancients' to life. I wanted to hear her words again, so, a year after reading it the first time, I purchased the book to hear her tell the story again.

Amazing, wide-ranging summary of textile development during prehistoric times extending into ancient Egyptian and Greek history. Scholarly yet accessible and engaging, Barber uses evidence from archaeological discoveries and tomb paintings, surviving traditions of design, and her own knowledge and experience as a weaver to form her conclusions. Despite the title, men played a role in textile production later in human history, as she shows from Sumerian cuneiform tablets and tomb illustrations. I read this on a Kindle, but would have profited by a better look at the many illustrations and recommend the paperback or hardcover for those. Not a casual read, but one which really increases understanding.

I just finished reading this. I have been interested in the history of textile manufacturing for the past ten years or so and was pleased to find this at Amazon.com. I learned a great deal about looms and fabric due to the extensive work by the author. The one thing that puzzles me however is the 'sextist' attitude on the part of Elizabeth Wayland Barber. She concluded that women were the manufacturers of all looming and tailoring and that is something that cannot be verified from her research.Still, I enjoyed it thoroughly and learned a great deal. Books such as this should be part of every school's educational agenda. How else will students learn anything about the struggles of humankind without an education that covers in depth exactly what our ancestors had to do for survival?

A tantalizing glimpse into the tools and history of those who worked with fiber and made cloth, and how they wore it. The first part of this book is as exciting as when I recently saw two strand thigh spinning. Thousands of years before spinning wheels, there was thigh spinning. Thousands of years before tee shirts and jeans there were string skirts. A woman from Ghana once told me her little girls wear a string around their waist. Connecting the dots from 20,000 year old woman carvings adorned with string to a tradition still practiced today is amazing to contemplate.

I have been collecting painting books for years, trying out new techniques a little at a time. This is not my first Donna Dewberry book, but it is now my favorite. The color palette she has chosen for each project is much more true to life than in her older books. There are so many projects I just love that I do not know where to start. She also includes several different techniques for the background painting before the florals are done, which I love. One of the best features is where she shows which background colors are okay and which ones really make the flower painting look fabulous. If you are debating about buying this book, I most highly recommend it.

This is another wonderful book by Donna Dewberry. She is fantastic and this book fantabulous! I have a private student and we are working on painting all “50” blooms!

I bought this book in used condition, it is in very good condition, it is informative and I got it quickly, I can't wait to get started painting!

Having taken Donna Dewberry's offically sactioned one stroke decorative painting lessons in my hometown, and being one of those people who have never painted a flower in their life beforehand, I can vouch for that quickness and ease of learning that Donna is so famous for. The flowers are not photorealistic but are classic easily recognizable flowers done for decorative purposes. You can easily learn to do any of these flowers in a day or so if you practise, and strictly follow the instructions. Would recommend any of Donna's books or project sheets to anyone that is leary of their ability to be crafty, as long as you are willing to follow her directions. I was amazed what I learned in each lesson when I took the course, and the book is designed much the same way as one of her teachers would teach you in a class.

Love anything from Donna Dewberry

LOVED IT

I Love her different flowers, and for beginner's..I'd say this and the "Technique's" book are all you need to start with. I purchased about 10 books, and as a beginner, most are them sitting on the side as a lot are repetitive. Maybe a different thing here and there, but if your on a budget, those are the two books to get.

I had never seen this book before (I have a lot of Donna books) LOVE ITSupplier was timely and the book is perfect - just as described

"Great book-exactly as I envisioned it! And it arrived earlier than the scheduled date-thank you!"

I have a large collection of Southwest cookbooks - but this is by far the best one. My all-time go-to from now on. Get the hard cover...the pictures are amazing and help design your presentation.

This is a very accessible means of delving into southwestern cuisine. The recipes are clear and easy to follow and there's info on how to obtain ingredients not readily available in areas outside the southwest. I have way too many cookbooks but this one won't be one I'll get rid of any time soon.

Love it
