Review

I love this book, partly because I see myself in almost every page―my clumsy, halting, constantly faltering daily walk with God―but mostly because I recognize the gospel in almost every page: God’s mercy, patience, persistence, and faithfulness laid out in the most imaginative ways. This book is a wonderful accomplishment and an excellent read. (Fernando Ortega, singer-songwriter)To read this book is to take a journey. The eyes of your soul will open widely, and you will blink in wonder at how you had never seen what you see now. Rebecca Reynolds takes in hand language, literature, science, philosophy, theology, and her own life experience to explore those foundational questions that haunt and confuse us. Enjoy your journey! (Sarah Van Diest, author of God in the Dark)Wisdom and compassion illuminate every beautiful sentence of this gospel-infused book. I love that Rebecca Reynolds chose the title Courage, Dear Heart. She’s one of the most courageous people I know, and her heart is one of the dearest. I hope this is the first of many books from her. (Jonathan Rogers, bestselling author)In Courage, Dear Heart, Reynolds enters into the depths of each reader’s messy human experience and puts her arm around them in friendship, offering compassion, wisdom, and hope. Reynolds speaks to all readers as a close friend, immersing them in a rich narrative saturated with poetry, literary excerpts, Scripture, and authentic, sometimes painfully honest stories from her life and ministry. Courage, Dear Heart is the rare book that not only keeps vigil with readers in the shadows of their struggles but also compassionately walks beside them as they move once again toward the light. I am certain I will return to it many times to experience the grace woven into each paragraph of this wonderful book. (Joel Clarkson, author and composer)Written with imagination and compassion, these letters to a weary world will bring renewed vision and some much-needed courage to their readers. (Malcolm Guite, poet and singer-songwriter)Rebecca Reynolds is one of the most perceptive and enjoyable writers I’ve ever read. In Courage, Dear Heart, her exceptional honesty, clarity, and willingness to engage with God in hard things shine through each page. This is not a dry tome. These are word pictures of God and his workings to brighten everyday life. (Ron Block, instrumentalist and vocalist with Alison Krauss and Union Station)

Maybe you aren’t like this, but so often when I hear a command, I try to jump right into spiritual performance. I try to be a Christian as I try to diet, declaring, ‘I need to get a grip on this!’ But honestly, changing myself spiritually usually goes about as well as trying not to eat an open pack of Oreos in my pantry. So what if instead of shaming ourselves for our feelings, trying to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and hating ourselves when we fail, we took time to admit the real truth of our situation to God? What if we just said, ‘Lord, I am scared. I need some help with this fear’? This is a powerful step to take because the gospel isn’t about working harder to prove ourselves—it’s about the power of God living through incapable humans

I first read Rebecca Reynolds’s work in a post published by the Rabbit Room. I was in a season of heavy discouragement and disillusionment, and she was voicing things I had barely been able to begin expressing in my own heart. Suddenly, I wasn’t alone. If you’re like me—and maybe most people aren’t, but if you are—you may have felt an unshakeable weight in the past few years at the state of things today, whether in the church, politics, the world. Mentors have failed. The character of some leaders has been proven empty. Sometimes once vaunted rhetoric has been shown not to be the noble truth we were told it was, but rather empty words only used to manipulate. It has, at times, been disorienting. In language heartfelt, poetic, and rich with imagery, Reynolds speaks needed truth in these “letters to a weary world.” She points us back to the truths that don’t change and the one who can handle the weight of our honest wrestling. Letter 3 (to the long-suffering) and letter 7 (to the disillusioned) are, to me, worth the price of the book.Maybe I overstate my case, and maybe the appeal of this book is more narrow than I think. Even so, for a few of us, it’s a book we’ve needed for these times we’re in.

“God never meant for the Christian life to be one bright day of salvation followed by four decades of pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, trying harder to be better.” RRRebecca Reynolds has crafted such a beautiful, vulnerable, and true life. This book is the natural extension of herself. The title sums up the work perfectly - these are letters of encouragement, exhortation, empathy, lament, and solidarity with and for fellow pilgrims wandering a long way from home. Rebecca never puts herself above the reader, revealing her own struggles with her expectations and experiences by being honest about not only preconceived notions but the reasoning (or lack of reasoning) behind them. She is willing to enter into that space of not-knowing that one so longs to find in fellow Christians nowadays but often finds lacking. In this role, her desire to know and understand motivations and methods takes on an almost scientific approach and she expresses aptly her fascination with how the onion is constructed as she peels away layer after layer. She is both confident and humble in how she chronicles her discoveries (and one envies the students that encounter her teaching each day!)In short, this book is a gift, a heartfelt labor of deep affection and devotion from an author who has generously given her best to this work.

I've read a lot of books in my few years of life. This is one of the few times I've also had the privilege of knowing the author, and having experienced a handful of the things she writes about with her family. So needless to say, it's a good book. A great book even. But you're not reading this in order to read yet another "good book." You want to know why this book is different. So let me tell you, that this book IS different because this is her heart, in paper. In this book she'll tell you she likes words, which is why I was shocked this book was only a handful of letters. There's so much of her heart, and she addresses the Good, bad, and the ugly parts about what's weighing is down. The unconventional truths that are actually driving us, whether we realize them or not. That's why this book is different. It's not a book to even need to read straight thru, but a letter a day will do the heart good and give you something to ponder on. That's why this book is different. If you're questioning your foundations, if you're wondering if you're alone in your fears, and you need to relate to someone... Read this book. You'll meet her in it's pages and find a friend who not only listens, but relates.

think my first exposure to Rebecca Reynolds was through a short essay in one of the Molehill anthologies, which are put out regularly by Rabbit Room. I remember telling my wife excitedly about that essay. When I learned that she would be releasing this book, I had no hesitation in purchasing it.I cannot speak highly enough about this book. Reynolds writes with intelligence, humility, and heart. She writes about the human condition not as an intellectual treatise, but as one who has seen it, who has lived it. She is a storyteller, through and through. I do not know which of the letters is my favorite, but I resonated deeply with several of them, perhaps a letter to the fearful, a letter to those living in chaos, or a letter to the disillusioned. I hope she doesn’t stop here; the world needs more storytellers like her.
