I have never given a 1-star rating until now. But this is truly one of the worst books I have ever read and the reasons for this are numerous. The author deserves this low rating for having wasted 8+ hours of my life.Note: I only bought and read this book because it was my book club's pick for the month. Even then, I barely made it through the entire book. I was honestly tempted on several occasions to abandon it completely - it was that painful. The first 50% is akin to plodding through mud mixed with molasses. Numerous times I lost concentration and had to reread many sentences. Like I said - it was painful. It somewhat picks up the pace in the second half, but it is then that you notice how truly bad it is, as the style and plot (or lack thereof) become more noticeable.Firstly, the writing is beyond poor. It has absolutely no soul. It is flat, simplistic, with staccato-like sentences. This "novel" reads more like an accountant's summary report than a novel. Not being able to read it in the original Arab language, I cannot say whether this is due to a (poor) translation or the author's actual lack of any writing talent. But either way, the phrasing is awkward, almost on par with a Google Translate experience. It is full of abrupt cuts and poor transitions. As an example: the protagonist enters a room in a brothel, and in the next paragraph he exits the brothel; no description, no plot development. Another example: he is riding in a car with another character (Nawal), and in the next paragraph, they are in a hotel cafeteria, with no transition or explanation how they got there.Secondly, and more unforgivably, the plot structure itself is a mess. The story D-R-A-G-S in the beginning half, then whisks by in the final 20%, making you feel the author himself got bored with the whole mess, or else was on a tight deadline to his publisher, and just wanted, or was forced, to wind everything up asap. In fact, he was in such a hurry to wrap things up, that he forgot all about the wooden panel that was found behind the Virgin statue at Hadi's place – a plot point touched upon several times, leading one to believe it was something of significance – but I guess not.The author has no notion of time structure: a thread of narrative rambles on into the future, then in the next paragraph/section (again without any transition) jumps back to some previous point.Thirdly, there is zero character development. I've read books where robots had more personality than any of the characters in this book. And purely as an observation, the only women in the book continue to perpetuate the female Arab stereotypes: the stupid, rambling old woman, the whore, the conniving yet guileless businesswoman-whore. Although to be fair, the men are not much more fleshed out…The (I assume) main character, Mahmoud al-Sawadi, would appear to be the alter-ego of the author, Ahmed Saadawi (Mahmoud being a derivation of Ahmed and Sawadi being almost an anagram of Saadawi), and as such gets the most character development. But even then, he remains a bland, unformed creature – not much different at the end of the book from what he was at the beginning.I totally fail to see how it won any, let alone top awards. The only even remotely plausible explanation I can think of is that someone had to have a “token” Arab work in their repertoire, because there can be no other explanation.

A must read. The surreal elements used to convey the politically relevant commentary uniquely brings to light the complexity of a region often viewed stereotypically. This book will leave you thinking. It will leave you wanting someone else you know to read it, so that you can verbally process the profound journey Saadawi took you on.Remember, this novel is translated and a lot is lost in translation. This should not be viewed as the fault of an author or a translator, but rather viewed with appreciation that’s English audiences have a small gateway into Iraqi and Arabic literature. For people less familiar with Iraqi names and those who struggle with numerous characters, there is a handy character list provided at the beginning of the novel with a brief description of who they are!

A wonderfully written and consciously disturbing allegory of violent post Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Mary Shelley’s Creature here stands for global revenge and serves as both the initiator and the victim of on going terror. Victor Frankenstein is equated with his creation and is thus forced to take responsibility. Still, this book is far from the quote from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein it opens with; in itself it forms an innovative, magical-realistic tale.

It has been almost 200 years since Mary Shelley wrote the original classic. Yet, here we stand another retelling of the story of Frankenstein's monster. Mixing the Shelley tale with life in war-torn Iraq makes for a fascinating concept to discuss. Although Saadwai's book starts off slow. It picks up and has really disturbing parts.

For a good time start on page 143. That's when the story actually starts. What comes before is a languid, meandering prologue that will make your eyes roll back in your head. The story comes together when Frankenstein's narrative starts. Up to that point, it's just a mess of what feel like random characters, some of whom are relevant at the end of the story, some of whom are not. There are craft issues with head hopping and weird, confusing scene transitions that don't clear up until right around page 143. It's like the first half or so is a first draft and the last half or so is a tightly plotted spec fic thriller. The book has two personalities that way. I like the idea suggested in another review that the story is meant to mirror Frankenstein's haphazard construction...but that's a really romanticized way to look at bad story structure.Anyway, the main thrust of the story is to question who is innocent and who is guilty through the lens of a Frankenstein. Who really is responsible for violence? Does anyone have clean hands? At the end there's an interesting conceptual switcheroo of who's good and who's evil.I'm glad I read the book,it has interesting ideas, but it was a long, punishing slog. Still, the story is an important piece of speculative fiction, although it might be better to wait for the movie...which I hope there will be one. A film would allow for the opportunity to correct issues with story pacing and clarity and let it shine the way it should because it really is a gem.

I was really intrigued to read this, and thought it had an absolutely amazing concept. It does, but then it doesn't really seem to know what to do with it. It splits its POV through multiple characters, seemingly mostly for the sake of taking up space. It does a lot of interesting worldbuilding, but then doesn't really fulfill its own promise.

A Baghdad junk dealer sews together pieces and parts of the innocent dead to create a monster. The monster know as Whatsitsname exacts revenge on the perpetrators of the parts he is made of. But, the junk dealer has a problem of fabrication and credibility. So, is the monster real or urban legend?

This novel was not as interesting as I expected given that is is a finalist for the Booker Prize. Saadawi has an intereting idea but the book itself did not hold my attention. It's an ok read.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I do plan to collect this set when I can.Rogue Dragon Rising, part oneThis is the first book in a serial trilogy, and this means that there are 3 parts that go together to tell one story, and they end in cliffhangers until the 3rd book. Some people may not like serials, and if you are one of them wait and read all 3 books together once they publish. This is for adults only and does have sensitive topics including abduction and selling people. This is a unique shifter world where not all shifters can handle the transformation and those who don’t go rogue and hurt people. In this world, shifters are divided into carnivores and herbivores where carnivores tend to protect those under their care. Amari lives in the Veil, but she ventured outside. Now she is hurt, and she has amnesia. All sorts of chaos and adventure happens to her along the way, and she has secrets even she doesn’t know about. This was a quick read that I loved, but I hated when it ended. I can’t wait to read the next part!Sleeping Dragon Stirs, part twoThis is the second book in a serial trilogy, and this means that there are 3 parts that go together to tell one story, and they end in cliffhangers until the 3rd book. Amari still doesn’t remember her past. Jaxon wants Amari as his mate, but his past is haunting him after what his dad endured. His cadre helps him with everything from protection to advice. Amari’s family now knows she is alive. There is a murder mystery, and the Protectorate rep has arrived in the area to prepare for Trinity. So much going on, I can’t wait to see how everything works on in the end. Amari is protective and fierce, love her strong character. Jaxon and his cadre make a great family and nest, and I think Amari fits in perfectly!Alpha Dragon Awakes, part threeThis is the 3rd part of this story, and it is for adults only due to the steamy content. It is a must for you to read the parts in order because the three parts are all part of the same story.I loved every second of this whole story. There is so much going on, passion, romance, mystery, treachery, and more. I love both Amari, Jaxon, and their families. This is a unique world that pulls you in; you will want more each time because I know I do. I especially love their HEA, and I suspect there will be a lot more in the future about their nest and the Hawke nest. I’m excited to see what comes next.I highly recommend to any shifter fan who want a new and unique world where you won’t know what will happen next!

A young woman with no memory finds herself forced in auction of shifters. The only thing she remembers is her first name. For some reason, her fiery red hair has everyone giving her a wide berth. When Dragon lord Jaxon Blackthorn sees the petite redhead, he’s drawn to her in a way he’s never been drawn to any female before. He can’t help coming to her rescue every time problems arise even as he’s sworn to never mate. This was a really great story. It’s definitely a long read, but following Amari’s journey as she tries to figure out who she is is well worth the read. There were a few small things that bugged me, like jumping to other POVs beyond the two main characters (with a long read like this I skimmed through these as they tended to drag me down a bit with the story) and when the book starts, there’s no real introduction to the world Amari is dealing with. It doesn’t really detract from the story, but it irritated me a bit as I was trying to figure out what was happening. I’ve never read this author before so I’m not sure if it was explained in another story or not. I can’t wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend.**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book

I really enjoyed these books and would give this a 3.5. Because the first two books in this series are short and end in cliffhangers I think this is the best way to read these books. The world building was really good, the plot moved as a good pace, and there was no instalove which I loved. Amari is strong, smart, and resourceful. Jaxon is the typical brooding male lead, but very likeable. All of the supporting characters were very likeable as well. There is a villain, but they aren’t important to Amari and Jaxon’s story. The conflict was internal and that was a refreshing change to read in this genre. This story was completed but there are plenty of characters whose stories I would like to read, I am eager for the next book in this series.

Outside the Veil Boxed Set by TJ Shaw is book 1-3 in the Outside the Veil series. These books cover the story of Jaxon Blackthorn and Amari Hawke. After a terrible injury Amari is left with no memory but her pain doesn't end there. Amari keeps getting attacked and unsure what or why. When Jaxon a dark alpha dragon shifter saves her there is an attraction there that doesn't stop, but Jaxon tries to fight it at first. But the more he comes forward to help the more he cannot turn his back on the growing feelings. But things don't go easy and plays out in the 3 book set.Exciting read.

An amazing series. Could not put these books down.

I bought the Kindle version of this book, and I think a print copy might be better. It's sometimes hard to get a good look at pictures and illustrations with kindle editions. That's why I gave it three stars. It's probably worthy of 4.The book covers the 'basics', and has a few special styles, as in the picture on the cover. You'll need some "tools" to actually do the job and add the finishing touches. Recommendations for types of tools, or websites where to get them, etc. would have been nice.

I bought this for my grand niece - the only horse person in our family :( I'm doing pretty much anything I can to encourage her. I thought she would enjoy braiding her ponies and her mom's horse's manes and tails. I included in the package a braiding kit with tools, rubber bands, ribbons, etc.. I really appreciated that you can hang this book up as a ready reference while braiding.

I had often admired the great braid jobs at shows and in horse photos. This book tells you everything you need and need to know to be a successful groom/braider. From technique, to tools this book has it all. The publisher was clever enough to make it durable enough to be barn and show worthy. It will stand up to the rigors of the tack trunk where I consider it to be a must! Riders and grooms of every discipline will benefit from this great book.

Liked the equipment list, the tips were great! I have a pony in harness, took a couple of ideas for tails. Nice examples for several disciplines. Very good instructions, pictures were good, too. I'd recommend it

I can't wait to try these out! I have a mustang whose mane knots with the wind, so I wanted to learn to braid it but I wanted variety. I'll definitely be trying all of these on her for the fun of it :D (also, the braid on the front IS in the book. It's called a diamond braid but has a second name. I only glanced at it but on my iPhone kindle app it's 65% through). I like that it has various disciplines in here, too.

I Love this book. So much so that I've bought it 3 times... I keep giving it to horse people then find I need it... Beautifully done and easy to understand. You'll be a pro in no time..

This is a well put together book that is spiral bound. The pictures are in full color and a good size. There are a lot of different braids with instructions and pictures.

Exactly what I was looking for! There are braid ideas for riding horses of almost every discipline (western pleasure, dressage, jumper, etc.), lead-line horses, carriage horses, and drafts in collars. There's a few braids and styles that are just "for fun." Easily written and good illustrations.

I love how this story expanded and enriched and illuminated my ideas about angels. I always held comforting thoughts that there are angels all around, but those thoughts and hopes were transformed into truth through the magical story-telling by Michelle. You will be drawn into the lives of fairies, angels, Old Souls and mermaids and while you're enjoying their antics and wisdom and love stories, you'll become aware of the connection and resources and miracles happening continuously in your own life. You might even discover you are an Earth Angel, here to help people wake up to the power and love and abundance endlessly available from the Universe. I couldn't put this book down and immediately ordered the next book in the series, then the next, and the next. Now I'm reading through the series a second time and understanding even more about the realm of angels who are definitely all around us and who are right beside me here on Earth. Thank you, Michelle, for the awakening!

It is so refreshing to discover a book that has a deeper spiritual lesson for young adults (though older adults will love it, too!) If looked into deeply, some of the lessons that are taught at the "Earth Angel Training Academy" hold the power to change the way we look at life, and allow for greater happiness. Readers who won't connect with the spiritual philosophy, however, will find the story to be an enjoyable journey into a beautiful fantasy world. The author does a great job of blending fiction with philosophy in an engaging, fun way. Worth the read!

Fun and intriguing book about Angels that turn into Earth Angels. Michelle gives so much detail about the Earth Angel Academy and its characters that you feel part of the story.

wonderfully written book that delves into the spirituality of mankind

I loved the book, and ready to start the next one in the series. Michelle Gordon has a real knack for writing a great story.

The concept of Earth Angels was something very new to me. It is so intriguing and has made me really think about my worldview. I have since done more research on it and think that Michelle's books are a great introduction to it . The books weave in the concepts of Earth Angels and humans 'awakening' in a way that is simultaneously enjoyable to read and thought-provoking. As usual, Michelle's writing has produced some great quotes. I read this book on a Kindle (which is something, because I rarely read books on my Kindle) and made frequent use of the 'note' feature to keep track of quotes and lessons that I loved. I related to some of the characters for different reasons, so I really got into the story. I already have the second book in the series, so I'm about to move on to that one. All in all, this is yet another great book by the author and I recommend it for anyone who is interested in the topic of Earth Angels.

Velvet is an old soul who runs an academy whose main purpose is to train angels, fairies, aliens, and other beings in the ways of human life. These beings are then born into the human world with the intent of awakening people to be good and to do right, in an attempt to make the earth a better place. When earth begins to spiral downward, an influx of students crowd the academy in an attempt to get to earth to save the human race before it's too late. This book follows Velvet, the headmaster, as she prepares herself and her students for the possible Golden Age of the earth. Through the process she experiences many ups and downs, enjoys new found love, deals with devastating loss, and begins remembering things about her past that she doesn't recall ever forgetting. This book was enjoyable and very well written. Geared towards a younger audience, it can be motivational and enlightening. It is based around the idea of reincarnation and the afterlife, and refers to more than one Supreme Being, a god and a goddess. That being said, if you are at all religious, you may have difficulty with some of the subject matter, as I did in parts. The overall message of the book, however, was a positive one.complimentary book given for a free review. come see this review and more on juliesbookreview.blogspot.com

Wow what a fun interesting book. For years Velvet has been the head and founder of Earth Angel Academy. It trains Angels, Fairies, Old soles and others who will be going to earth to help humans awaken. Velvet is getting ready for another training session to start, but things are not going to be the same this time. There is going to be a shift on earth and that shakes everything up at the academy. From the very moment Aria the Faeirie met Amethyst an Angel I was hooked. The characters personalities fit so well, infact I thought all the characters were developed nicesly. This book is about friendships, love, loss, exceptance and so much more. This book resonated with me. I know it is a fantasy but it felt so right in so many ways. I cannot remember having such a fun read and feeling the emotions I did.I want to buy it and give it to all my friends.Great Book.

As an American I grew up understanding the Zionist narrative about Israel and Palestine as fact. We never were exposed to the other side of the story, and when we do get glimpses, our media writes it off as the victimized Israel defending themselves against the hostile, terrorist Arabs (read: Muslims). My husband found a video of Miko Peled speaking and it was one of the most important hours of my life; I immediately bought this book to get more of the story. Peled's tales of his father's experiences in the Army, growing up as a committed Zionist, and coming to terms with Israel's true actions and motives as he got older are illuminating. As a Jew, He exhibits that anti-Zionism has no relation to anti-semitism, another myth with which we have been brainwashed into submission.Every American should read this book and learn what our media has been keeping hidden for so long. It will uncover your humanity and change your perception of Palestine/Israel forever.God bless Miko Peled for his courage in speaking the truth against the powers that be.

This was difficult to read. As one who was brought up to believe Israel was in the right for spiritual reasons, then hear that they behave so poorly- contrary, in fact - to the God they claim..... I am heartbroken. Many of the names of the leaders I have heard & thought they were great & moral men. Now I find that they truly are as bad as the Nazis. But I find some peace is realizing that Zionism is NOT Judaism, & that being anti-Zion is NOT being anti-Semitic.

I will never be the same after reading this. Where do I even start?"Mine is the tale of an Israeli boy, a Zionist, who realized that his side of the story was not the only side and chose to cultivate hope in a situation most call impossible."This is about Miko Peled's journey. His father's influence. The death of his niece in a suicide bomb attack that only further strengthened his resolve. It is enlightening, moving, at times, almost too much to read. His father was the famous General Matti Peled. A hero for the Israelis for his military finesse and ruthlessness. A man who went on to become a peace activist. Who received death threats and hate from the very people he fought wars for. That right there should tell us everything about the VERY toxic Israeli mentality that goes with Zionism and Nationalism. Calling someone an "Arab lover" is an insult. Fraternizing with the "dirty, stinking, Arabs" is frowned upon. Two groups of people who live that close, and aren't allowed to intermingle."It wasn't long before friends stopped inviting him and my mother to social events. He became a political and social pariah"And let me clarify, his father was NOT against the Zionist state. He was ONLY against the continued oppression of the Palestinians and believed they deserved equal rights. THIS was the man other Israelis sent death threats to, THIS is why he was accused of treason."One point he came back to often was that the best thing America could do for Israel was to stop selling it weapons and giving it free money."It amazes me, that an ENTIRE population of Israelis, and people around the world, choose to blindly believe the propaganda they are told by ANY government, let alone the Israeli govt."Israeli citizens were led to believe that the Arab armies were coming to rape and murder them"Miko Peled talks about the days he was proud to wear the red beret and serve "his country", but how he was often uncomfortable with the orders.".. that if anyone so much as looked at us, we were to beat them, or as he put it, "Break every bone in their body." {{snip} But soldiers do not ask questions; they follow orders."Where, oh where, have we ALL heard that before?I cannot say how much I admire Miko Peled and his sister, Nurit's, minds. After Nurit's daughter died in a suicide bomb attack. She did not blame the oppressed and desperate Palestinians."As she saw it, every Israeli politician who did not end the Israeli occupation and oppression of Palestinians was responsible for the deaths of Israelis and Palestinians. She reasoned, and still does, that this is not a question of policy or inability to reach an agreement but callousness, greed for land, a desire to rule, and a lack of will to end the conflict."The sheer amount of fact and history in this book is overwhelming. How he went around reading up on Israeli historians and academics who corroborated NOT what he had been told his entire life by his government, but the "other" side of the "conflict" (and books he has mentioned which I have every intention of reading, except for the ones in Hebrew.. which unfortunately I won't be able to.)"It opened the door to a discussion most Israelis are fiercely protective about - which is, what did the Zionist forces REALLY do in 1948?"And you know what kinda people are fiercely protective of certain topics? The ones they get defensive about? The ones they know deep down inside they won't like the answer to. And that makes it all SO much worse."The new state did not allow any of the Palestinians who left to return to their homes and land. They were to remain refugees forever."About halfway through the story, Peled talks about the first time he actually SOCIALIZES with the dreaded Palestinians. Admits his fear, the fear that had been instilled in him by his people. And overcomes it, slowly, but surely. And it was a wonderful thing to read in an otherwise harrowing story. It just made me realize HOW dehumanized the Palestinians are to most Israelis. No wonder they don't care, no wonder they call for Palestinian blood, and cheer for it. For generations they have been told that the Palestinians are no better than rabid dogs out for blood. They don't SEE the women, the children, the fathers, the grandparents. They CHOOSE not to see them. They have built an apartheid wall to separate them. They have no guilt."The ugly concrete structure was built around the city by Israel to separate Palestinians from lands that Israel wants to settle. {{snip} You could also see work being done to expand the wall and tunnels to allow Israelis settlers to travel from Israel to the settlements in the West Bank without having to see or interact with Palestinians."He has been arrested numerous times by the Israelis, his own people, for things like making trips to the Occupied territories for peaceful protests, charity, taking supplies to those in need. (He recently got arrested once again for protesting for Palestine.)"My own people had arrested me for doing something good. My disillusion with Israel had sunk to a new low."The sheer cruelty of the Israelis was mind boggling. Honestly, I just had not imagined it could be that bad. And that's saying something when you see the pictures of devastation in Gaza. Miko Peled's account is nowhere near as graphic, nor written dramatically, but in it's quiet earnestness, it is just as effective."Gaza has essentially turned into an enormous concentration camp.""Since the early 1950s, Israeli commandos have conducted "punitive" operations against the people of Gaza - in spite of the fact that the people of Gaza never had an army and never posed a military threat."Facts like how, OF COURSE, Israel was a staunch ally of South Africa in the apartheid years. How it used ethnically based oppression for decades to achieve it's goal of creating a Jewish majority in Palestine.I, of course, especially loved how Israel claims the same bulls*** over and over again for decades, and the world still sits silently by."To make things worse, Israel claimed that notices were given to the local population that the attack was imminent and that people should leave areas that were going to be bombed. One can only imagine a mother or father sitting for days anticipating the onslaught, yet knowing full well that there was no escaping it."Borders closed, no bomb shelter luxuries that the Israelis boast (for those pesky Hamas rockets), nowhere to hide themselves or their children. And sitting there waiting. While the Israelis sit at the border and view the bombing as if it were a display of beautiful fireworks.".. was a continuation of an ongoing war, a war that aims to complete the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. I heard stories of people who drove to the Gaza border to sit on lawn chairs and view the bombing."The searing hypocrisy of the Israeli military and police even when they were trying to arrest him shocked me."Look, he is an Israeli citizen and he has rights. It's not a Palestinian that I can just beat up and throw in prison."There is an entire population of people. Who act like that. Think like that. Justify their heinous crimes like that. Do EXACTLY what was done to their ancestors. The Holocaust lasted for 4 years (1941-45, the systematic genocide of the Jewish people), they had been persecuted since 1933 before that. The world is still reeling from the atrocities committed. The Palestinians have been enduring their holocaust for decades more. Will the future ring with the screams of the dying innocents for centuries to come? Or will history turn a blind eye to this as the world is doing now? Will we be telling our children that there once were Palestinians who lived on Palestinian land? Who had their own culture and identity? But are no more? Will we all continue treating Israelis as EQUAL victims? As bizarre and ridiculous and illogical as that is?Miko Peled is way more hopeful than I about a resolution to this. I see no light at the end of this dark and bloody tunnel. I see no way the world will EVER be able to make up for ignoring the plight of the Palestinian people. I see no way that most Israelis, who deliberately do NOT want to educate themselves on facts, will ever see the truth. But I find a glimmer of hope in the stories of the hundreds of Israelis who have searched for the truth themselves, and not trusted their ruling class (like none of us should).. the groups of Jews who condemn the "state" of Israel. The ones who realize that Palestinians are their fellow human beings. And there is no greater reason to NOT kill them. This book is a MUST read for anyone who wants a harsh, but real, look at the situation. Miko Peled, and MANY Israelis after and before him who spoke of similar things, have NO reason to lie. And have always backed up their information with facts. The blind to the truth Zionists can condemn them as traitors and liars. But the truth is, they have NO reason to do so. And EVERY reason to share the truth with the world. It made me cry more times than I can count. But I would read it all over again just to educate myself. And to realize that this, unlike what our politicians tell us, is NOT a complicated issue. It is simple. It is straightforward. And it comes down to the world condoning the massacre of innocents. That is it. That is all.I stand with Palestine. (even though I will probably never have the strength of heart that they do, to continue going on and making a life for themselves from the rubble and debris and blood soaked streets the Israeli occupiers leave behind.)

I am a 68 year old New Zealander and have been aware of the Palestine/Israel story since I was a small girl, can remember hearing the celebrations on the radio and the quote "a land without a people and a people without a land" I presume this was when the United Nations gave Palestine to the Jews. Even then I felt sorry for the Palestinians and have ever since. I have to say I was always in the minority. Just finished reading this book! It makes me feel sick to the stomach to realise what horrors the Palestinians have endured! Worse than I ever imagined. Everyone needs to read this! I hope someday in the not to distant future, that the Israeli government is held to account.

highly recommend this to anyone that wants to know the truth about what Israel is actually doing. Miko is not the only Israeli officer to come out and tell the truth about his government.

The stories of specific Palestinian treatment by the Israel Army and those at the top were very disturbing. However, I am glad I read this and glad that it was written by an Israeli that had government and military ties. It made the unbelievable story real, and made me listen to the rhetoric differently.

Great book. Very well written with many warm up techniques are for use not only in dance but for yoga too. My students in yoga have been loving the core warms ups that I added from here. This week will add some of the hamstring ones. Very detailed use of muscles and bone structure. A must have for intelligent students and teachers that care about the longevity of their students and bodies. I don't always agree with the way she uses breath because it is often contrary to what I learned in yoga certification so I do what feels better and right for me.

This is exactly how I needed to learn. Ballet teachers have various metaphorical ways of explaining things ("long", "light", "straight") that don't actually map well only how human bones and muscles actually work. This helps put what my teachers are telling me into a context that makes sense to me. (It's certainly not a substitute for teaching, just another view of the subject that works well with the way I understand anatomy.) It's even improved my running: running coaches also use metaphors I couldn't apply (the "hanging from a string at the top of the head" explanation of posture never made a lick of sense to me). I have a better understanding of how the core muscles fit in to the overall biomechanics of dance and sport.

This is exactly what I wanted. It has a chapter that describes the various body parts wit practical exercises for each. Great information for someone hoping to prevent injury whether they are a pro or a social dancer. I also think this is a great resource for teachers to better address individual students if they are having issues with a specific body area or injury. I am a partner dancer and found this information immensely helpful in my own dance practices as well as with friends and students.

Absolutely wonderful! I was injured and needed extensive PT -- found that this book more than filled the gaps in PT. If fact, have made more progress using this book, so stopped PT. Provides great illustrations and exercises. Descriptions and illustrations help individuals that are self-motivated to more accurately select and utilize exercises by visualizing and focusing on anatomy needed for specific moves.

I was thrilled to find an illustrated book on, specifically, classically trained dancers. There are so many fitness/ weight lifting/ running , etc. magazines out there that one that focuses on not just " the largest muscle groups" but the intricacies of dance movement, is such a useful and fascinating find. I would definitely suggest this book to all dancers that want specific areas to work on for a better aesthetic.

This book has been enormously helpful to me as an older, amateur dancer especially now during recovery from rotator cuff surgery. I have a medical education & over 30 years of clinical practice experience. I found the diagrams & text with focus on integrated function for dance to be very unique & helpful in improving turnout, arabesque & port de bras. I recently underwent rotator cuff surgery & struggling with some advanced integrated movements to restore my ballet arm positions. My therapy team is unfamiliar with my problem and we are using this book to guide restorative exercises. My therapy team loves the text & diagrams so much, I purchased a book for them. I found the diagrams & text to be superior to my medical textbooks! I highly recommend this book to dancers & therapists for improvement & injury recovery! It is sooo well done! I keep it in my dance bag!

I've been taking an adult ballet class for about a year and a half with minimal no previous ballet experience and this book has been incredibly helpful in clearly presenting the muscle groups of the body and how the body works while dancing. While none of the strengthening exercises or stretches are new to me (I've been an athlete a long time and practice yoga and Pilates regularly) it was nice to see how the exercises and stretches work each muscle group and what ballet movements those muscle groups are used for.I have recommended this book to my fellow adult ballet classmates and they seem to be enjoying it as well.

This book is my favorite quick reference book. From taking a kinesiology class, most of the information I already knew and from taking dance for several years, many of the stretches I knew as well. However, I love using this book as a quick reference book for referring back to the muscles that control various movements. It helps me remember the names of muscles that are not regularly referred to in a dance class. For me, the book did not have any new and different information. However, for someone who has never taken a kinesiology class and would like to further a dance career or just learn specific stretches to improve technique this is the perfect book for. I Highly recommend this book for every dancer, it is set up in an organized way that is easy to ready and very informative.
