It's very professional looking, and I love the idea. I'm just sad that my kids won't get much out of it. Despite it saying that it is for Junior Primary (ages 3-7), it is all words. There are no pictures at all. I have a nursery age child and a 3 year old. I was really hoping for pictures that they could look at and color. The only coloring pages are just words to color. I'm afraid that it won't keep their attention at all. I think I'm going to keep it, but I'm disappointed.

I bought the senior primary workbook for my 9 year old and this one for my 3 and 7 year old's. Well, the 7 year old's will be fine...I think...They are above grade level in reading, but I'm still not quite sure how well they'll do with it. We'll give it a shot, anyway.The 5 year old though, not a chance. She's just barely learning how to read. I thought this would actually be a Jr. primary workbook, since it says as much, but comparing it to the senior primary version, it's practically the same thing, but with a few fewer words in each activity. I'm guessing the author isn't too experienced with kids in this age range? If they are, those kids were some pretty dang, advanced kids!!Still. All that being said, for the kids who can keep up with it I really do love it. Well thought out. Plenty of activities that are entertaining while still including some that get them thinking and where they have to pay attention to the lessons.

This is fantastic! The first couple weeks of CFM were great at our house, but then the kids got bored, so I ordered 2 senior (8&10 yr olds) and 1 junior (6 yr old) books. I’m so glad I did. We have ten minutes for studies in the morning, today my kids asked me if they could have more time! So I am planning to do some studies after school. It’s great to see my kids engaged in the come follow me program.Your child does need to be a reader to enjoy this book. My 6 year old reads at a 2-3 grade level and this is perfect for him. I’m glad I read the reviews before I ordered and did not get one for my 4 year old. We just use a New Testament coloring book for him.Note to the author: I would love to see a ‘sunbeam’ version of these books!!!

My 6-year-old daughter loves to do this on Sundays. The book follows the same pattern each week, so the same types of activities (crossword puzzle, handwriting practice, coloring page, etc.) with a different scriptural theme. I really appreciate the creator offering this at cost and felt it was a really good value.

My daughter is obsessed with this. She loves looking up scriptures and coloring it. I would have given in 5 stars had I realized it wasn’t good for all junior primary. It is way above my 4 year old but perfect for my 7 year old.

This is such a great book for teaching children the New Testament. It adds a sense of fun to the scriptures. Even my 3 yr old enjoys doing it with help.

I've only read to page 63 but I'm ready to put the book down. I have kept reading up until now because I've been waiting for it to get better. I want it to get better. I want Ellis to be done with putting George Washington down and looking at him through such a negative lens. I want him to prove that he really believes what he states on pg. 39: "Though he was still developing...the outline of Washington's mature personality was already assuming a discernible shape." I know some biographers either over-appreciate their subjects and others under-appreciate them. This author definitely is under appreciating his. After more than 20 pages I've seen no sign of Ellis viewing Washington's weaknesses and mistakes as indicators of a learning and growing process. Instead he seems to be openly judging him from a fixed mindset. By page 63, the picture of George Washington that is emerging from Ellis's pen is a selfish, two-faced, conniving man. He's shown as a fanatic who sees conspiracy where there is none. He weaves a plot that convicts Washington of developing into a conspirator. The author's word choices and assumptions of Washington's motivation seem to be revealing the author's own motives and character, rather than Washington's. Repeatedly, he draws unsupported conclusions about Washington's motivation. If I hadn't read another biography by William Roscoe Thayler, before this one, I would be of the opinion after reading Ellis's book that George Washington was a bad guy.Examples of this author's wording and conclusions:"In addition to his familiar themes--petitions were worse than worthless, abstract arguments must be accompanied by economic pressures--now he detected a full-blooded conspiracy against American liberty." pg. 62 Is conspiracy (a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful) not a good understanding of the entire relationship between America and Great Britain during this time period? There were secret plots on both sides because both had different goals and motives regarding the future of America. Why does Ellis mock Washington for seeing this conspiracy as if he were a fanatic?"(A Lukewarm Episcopalian, he never took Communion, tended to talk about 'Providence' or 'Destiny' rather than God, and--was this a statement?--preferred to stand rather than kneel when praying.)" pg 45 "was this a statement?" This is the author's insertion. Why lead the reader by the nose with the author's personal biases and conclusions?"...but nothing he ever did had a greater influence on the shape of his own life than the decision to marry Martha Dandridge Custis." pg 40 I was expecting to hear how her faith and goodness helped him develop his own. But the author proceeds to talk about all of her money.Ellis speaks of rumors about Washington's fidelity to his wife and then says they were never verified. pg 44 But in my opinion, even speaking about unfounded rumors and gossip is totally disrespectful to anyone, let alone to someone whom we Americans owe so much."For the rest of his life, all arguments based on the principle of mutual trust devoid of mutual interest struck him as sentimental nonsense." pg. 39 I totally disagree. Looking at his life as a whole, he sacrificed much more for his country than he ever received from them or from us, who are his beneficiaries, who enjoy the resultant freedom and order of this country."Two features of the emerging Washington personality come into focus here: first, a thin-skinned aversion to criticism, especially when the criticism questioned his personal motive, which he insisted were beyond reproach; second, a capacity to play politics effectively while claiming total disinterest in the game." pg. 29 "which he insisted" and "while claiming" Insinuating that Washington was deliberately dishonest and two-faced. Could Ellis not say instead, "It is evident that Washington was still struggling with his ability to take criticism. In all of his actions he strove to do what he believed and understood at that time to be right but he still was learning and growing. His efforts to make a difference in the political arena were motivated by a sincere belief that he knew what was best. As a Virginian land owner, he empathized with others land owners like him and in so doing learned over time to see his own needs and conflicts as similar to others'.""Finally, this is the kind of man who will regard any failure to meet his exacting standards as a personal affront and persistent failure as evidence of a conspiracy to deprive him of what is rightfully his. Pity the London merchant who has to deal with him." pg. 47"But while most outspoken opponents of the Stamp Act, those whom Washington called 'the Speculative part,' emphasized the constitutional argument, his response more directly reflected his personal experience with Cary & Company." pg 52 AND "Once again there was a personal edge to that conviction." pg. 58 These and other similar statements attribute Washington's motives for revolution as purely mercenary. Ellis doesn't choose to write with empathy: making a living and building security for posterity was and still is a large part of the American dream."HIs singular triumph, in fact the result of multiple efforts over thirteen years of complex negotiations, was largely a product of his status as a veteran of the French and Indian War." pg. 56 This is just one of many instances where Ellis attributes the cause of a result for us. He says Washington's singular triumph was largely a product of his status."Washington was relentless in pressing his claims..." pg 56 Ellis chooses the word "relentless" which, combined with the portrait he continues to paint of this man, makes us believe that he was not only selfish, but relentlessly and heartlessly selfish. Where is the growth mindset he promised us on page 39? It is only to be found in one or two sentences but the rest is negative, critical, and disrespectful. I don't recommend this book.I know people aren't perfect, especially those we revere. In fact I love them all the more when I see they weren't and then learn from their mistakes. I have no problem seeing weaknesses and mistakes in George Washington but this author is choosing not only to focus in with a high power microscope on all them but to attribute a bunch more that are based on his personal speculation. He does not allow the reader to make those attributions and assessments herself. He leads her by the nose to see things in the negative light that he sees them. He presents evidence with a slanted, biased view that prevents us from seeing the true character of George Washington.

At ~275 pages before the acknowledgements, this book naturally leaves one wanting for detail, but is enjoyable and a great introduction or summation of some of the key points in Washington's eventful life. Prior to picking a Washington bio (having been prompted by McCullough's 1776), I had considered just plunging into Chernow's Washington: A Life, but feeling 800+ pages a bit more than I had confidence to chew, I opted to ease into it with His Excellency, and found myself immediately ordering Washington: A Life upon finishing. I do not regret it, as I enjoyed the read, but would advise someone in a similar situation to just go ahead and read Chernow's take - I both prefer his style and find the subject of such interest that it requires the greater level of detail that is provided in Washington: A Life.It's a good little book (paperback) that is easy to throw in a bag and a quick read that I will likely return to from time-to-time, but I would recommend Chernow's or McCullough's works before it.

I really enjoyed this book. I had neglected our 1st President since high school and feel I learned a lot from this book. Looking for something more in depth, I am now reading "Washington, a Life" by Chernow. This is a more detailed look, but I might not have read it without starting on "His Excellency, George Washington." This book is an excellent place to start and an easy read. It is also about 1/2 the lengthj of the Chernow book, so start there.

Not having read any biographies specifically about our first president, I was impressed to find one that looked good without being over 500 pages. Ellis’ work came also with the promises attached to having won two Pulitzer Prizes for “Founding Brothers” and “American Sphinx”. I was not disappointed.Reading reviews, I noticed that more than one reviewer chastised Mr Ellis for “disrespect” and what amounts to negativism in regard to Washington. I always read negative reviews because I usually learn more about whether I will find the book interesting and worth my time by the kind of criticism it draws. Deciding to try it mostly because of this criticism, I decided I do not want a white-wash of any historical personage. I want an even handed presentation free from either animosity or excess kindness. I want the truth. Again, I was not disappointed. I find the criticisms completely without foundation. Yes, Mr Washington is presented as having romantic feelings for Mrs Fairfax, but just as truly, it is stated that he resisted all inclinations toward her. Rather than defaming the President, Mr Ellis made him more courageous and admirable. I found no slander in the book; I found no excess criticism or character assassination. Rather, I discovered a man who changed and matured over the early years of his life and learned to control his passions, make wise decisions, and who went on to become the most revered of our forefathers, simply because he WAS totally human and yet controlled himself as well as, if not better than, anyone else of whom I have read.I am most impressed with this presentation of George Washington. He is no longer a marble mystery shrouded in sweet-smelling words to me. He is a real, living human being. He is, in my opinion, the most impressive human being I have ever read about, other than the only human in history to actually be perfect, Jesus Christ. Please don’t misunderstand: I am not comparing him to the Lord. I am simply saying he is a most impressive man.As for the content of the book, Ellis says only a small amount about Washington’s youth, gives good coverage to his activities, finances, personality and thoughts during the period of the French & Indian War through the start of the American Revolution. Ellis’ discussion and analysis is logical, easy to follow and helpful. I would classify this biography as being one of the most thorough biographies I have read, yet did not find it tedious or laden with excessive irrelevance. I never got tired of the story or anxious to finish. As a result, I am thoroughly satisfied with this work.Thank you, Mr. Ellis, for introducing me to His Excellency, George Washington. I am even more indebted than I ever realized to our most illustrious forefather.This book is highly recommended.Five satisfied stars.

Great in depth review of the first 500 years of the church and the traditions around the beginning of Christmas. This book is more academic than say Christmas: A Candid History, but if you enjoy the more detailed history and theological discussions, you will greatly enjoy this. Great read for those serious about their research.

I can't get enough of this kind of historical research. How we came to celebrate our modern holidays is fascinating and for me Christmas is the biggest of them all. Although the book spends a lot of time on Christian theology and biblical analysis, don't be put off by that. The author treats it as a historical source. The most interesting parts of the book are where the author adds in later texts, medieval sermons, chants, carols and traditions to illustrate the growth of this holiday through the sixth century. All in all a really good, easy read.

I bought this book in search of a text that would illuminate the history of Christmas as a sacred holiday in the church -- versus as a secular holiday (there are other good books on that topic). Kelly's book was a perfect fit for what I was seeking.Kelly recounts the history of the feast of the Nativity (Christmas) in the early church, examining the years from the end of the B.C. era through about the 6th century. He draws on scripture (the gospel accounts) as well as apocryphal literature to identify the sources of details for the modern day nativity story that we know. His discussion of identifying the date of Christ's birth is interesting and, frankly, really helpful for other Bible study efforts, as he explains the reckoning of time in ancient cultures. Really interesting stuff.I appreciated that the author drew not only on the canon, but on other sources, as well as taking a look at the culture of the day to explain how Christmas came to be celebrated. He illuminates the connection between Christmas and pagan winter celebrations without diminishing the significance of the Nativity.If you are interested in early Church history, particularly as it relates to Epiphany and the feast of the Nativity, you will find rich information in this text. If you are searching for the "meaning of Christmas" in the context of your Christian faith, this book may make you pause and reflect, and might possibly move you toward a richer and deeper experience of the holiday season.

While scholarly in nature, this book is not so dry that it can't appeal to the curious layman. In "The Origins of Christmas", the author gives us the historical origins of the date of the celebration of Christmas, the origins of many of the traditions surrounding Christmas (such as the names and nature of the 'wise men'), and some of the modern traditions (such as the Christmas tree) as well. Well written and well researched. An asset to the library not only of the biblical or Church scholar, but the curious layman as well.

This book contains a lot of stuff I didn't know. Perfect for history geeks of Early Christianity.

"The Origins Of Christmas" by Joseph F. Kelly, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, 2004.This book covers exactly what the title says, "The Origins of Christmas". Professor Kelly presents the establishment of Christmas as an important feast day in the Christian Church, with both eastern and western roots. Drawing heavily on the scriptural nativity stories, found in the Gospels of St Mark and St. Luke, the author shows the roots of story of the Three Kings, then Star over Bethlehem, the Flight into Egypt and many more commonly held aspects of Christmas as the present age knows it. Using historical analysis, Dr. Kelly makes it clear that Christ was probably born between 6 B.C,. to 4 B.C., (based upon the records for the death of Herod) and that the ancient Church chose December 25th as the date for celebrating the Birth of Christ as a holy remedy to Roman extravaganzas in that month of the year. Kelly shows how Christmas and Epiphany developed as competing feast days for the Nativity of Christ in Orthodox Catholic and Roman Catholic branches of Christendom. He also devotes some little time to St. Nicholas and how that saint's feast day metamorphosed into a gift giving day in certain countries (e.g. The Netherlands).This is not, however, a book that deals with the tinsel: the origins of Christmas trees, or Christmas decorations or Christmas lights. Christmas carols are hardly mentioned, and the more modern aspects of Christmas, such Prince Albert's introduction of Christmas trees to England, are not emphasized in Kelly's book. If you want a bible-based analysis of the origins of Christmas, and how the biblical story grew into today's modern story of Christmas, then this is the book for you.

As I wrote in the title, Ken Hom's Complete Chinese Cookbook Only Uses A Few Simple Ingredients (copied and pasted, too lazy to retype it even though as I type now, I realize that this is taking longer than if I were to type it by hand without the capitalization, help stop me)So if you were to glance at a few pages of this book, you'll start to notice a lot of the recipes call for the same thing. You'll notice, "huh, this one, and I swear, 50% of the other ones I looked at need: dark soy sauce, light soy sauce, and xiaoxing wine (or dry/sherry wine)." So, with that being said, you might feel like you've been cheated, and say "Hey why does everything contain these condiments?" Well, if you're a pessimist, I just saved you some money, because that's all you actually need*. (You'll probably also need garlic, ginger, green onion/scallions, and sesame oil) On the other hand, you could see this more like a technique book, as in, this is how you would make it, rather than why does everything sound like it'll taste the same. I'd rate the book maybe a 3 or 3.5, but he responds on twitter, so that's a either a sign that he's a nice guy towards his fans, or he knows how to work customer service.

Awful. Just awful. Too many unappetizing recipes. Go back to Martin Yan.

Warning- The 7,900+ reviews are not for the “Simple Words Let’s Talk” book which has a total of ten words. I think Amazon needs to make sure reviews are for the actual book being advertised and not for several of Priddy’s books combined. Most of the reviews shown here are for a combination of First 100 Words, First Animals, and First 100 Words with lift flaps not the Simple First Words Let’s Talk book advertised here.There are ten words in this board book (one per page) with a corresponding button that says the word when pushed.

"First 100 Words" by Roger Priddy was bought as a gift for my sons’s first birthday and it is the perfect book for a one year old. It is quite a basic book and the sort of board book most children will have at some stage in their life. It definitely deserves mention, as my son chooses it from his library nearly every day.Previous reviews have indicated some confusion over the book size. This version of the book is pretty small (it's 5 x 6 inches; an over-sized ABC/colors version can be found here), and it can withstand rough little hands as it is a board book.Each brightly colored page shows various photographs alongside the corresponding word. I like that it uses photographs instead of illustrations (animals wearing clothes, etc.). The pages are split into themes of things your LO will probably recognize from everyday life, such as clothes, food, things that go and so on.My son has had this book for a couple of months now and it’s been a huge hit with him. He will sit on the floor and look through it himself. Together, we look at the pages and I point to each picture and say the word. I’ve started him with some Tiny Tutor videos to supplement our lessons while I do chores around the house. We do this most days and the repetition seems to be paying off, as he seems to recognize a new thing in the book every day.Although rather basic on the face of it, I am really delighted with this book and wish we’d had it sooner. It is selling for under $5 on Amazon which I think is a real bargain. I’ve noticed there are some similar titles, such as First 100 Animals and First 100 Numbers Colors Shapes. I will be looking to purchase these in the future too. It seems the simple things really are the best sometimes.Highly recommended!

My 15 m.o. son has had the smaller board book version of First 100 Words, First 100 Animals, and First Numbers & Shapes for months now. He loves board books and he really seems to enjoy those books in particular so when I saw the Lift-the-Flap version I knew I had to buy it. Whenever I ask him to bring me a book to read to him, he chooses these books pretty frequently. He also spends a fair amount of time going through them while pointing at each picture and speaking his toddler language to himself. The lift flaps on this book adds another aspect to keep his interest in the book a little longer. These books have held up fairly well to the abuse my toddler has put them through, the pages have been chewed on, pulled on, bent, books have been thrown, yet none are falling apart. I was a little worried about him tearing the flaps (as he's done with other books) but so far they seem to be holding up. I will continue to purchase these.

This book is perfect for the diaper bag! It's small, and my 13-month old can enjoy it whether or not anyone is available to read it to her. It has kept her entertained through many restaurant mealtimes and car rides. You'll be amazed how many words your child knows when you ask her to point to specific pictures throughout the book!

I have had this book for the last 6 years. I have had to replace the book once because it is used so incredibly once. I started reading this with my oldest when she hadn't said any words by the time she was a year old. Once we got her autism diagnosis, this is actually one of the 5 books they told us to buy so we can read with her and start working with speech development and recognition and identification of other items. This is great for both receptive and expressive speech development, especially if you read it often. I have 3 girls who all had some speech development issues and this was the first thing that got them saying some words!I don't typically replace kids books because kids interests change so frequently and/or once the book is needing to be replaced, it usually means that the book has been very well used and read for a long time. This book is one of the three exceptions I have. My youngest is 16 months and has a hearing impairment and this book has even assisted in me helping her learn sign language because I could point to a picture and then sign the name. This book can be for any kid even if they don't have a speech delay because it never hurts to learn new words or improve on the words you already know. If the kid knows the words already you can still work with colors, shapes, collecting information ex) how many animals in the book?, letter identification, the list goes on.

Good for learning names of things, colors etc. The combination of having a "puppy" and a "dog", along with a "hen" and a "chick" can be confusing to little ones. The copy we received has a duplicate page- inserted upside down. Book is durable for kids over 1.

My son loves this book and brings it over all the time to "play" (we ask him where certain things are on the page and he points them out and tries to say the word if he can). We got the board book version which is great -- sturdy to stand up to toddler abuse, and compact for a diaper bag. But there are some words that I find a little strange/difficult to teach just yet at 20 months (mostly action words like Laugh, Cry, Read), or just words that I don't find super useful (like "colored paints" (as opposed to B&W paints??), "rattle" with a picture of a toy that looks nothing like any rattle I've ever seen, or "pajamas" which is hard to distinguish from regular clothes and is duplicated in the book). So while it may be 100 words, it's not necessarily all words that would be useful right now (IMO). I'd say it's still worth buying though.
