Q&A with Patrick Morley, author of How God Makes Men Q) Pat, you’ve been involved in men’s ministry for over 30 years. What do you see going on with men today that made you want to write this book? A) I love my work, and we are seeing amazing results. Every day we see men coming to Christ and growing as disciples. That said, we need to do a reality check. We live in a counter-Christian pop culture that ridicules men in general and Christian men in particular. The battle line against biblical manhood is clearly drawn and fiercely contested. As a result, legions of men struggle to sustain what they started and finish the race. It’s as though they’ve enlisted and been issued a weapon that they’ve never learned how to clean and shoot. They’re sitting ducks on the day of battle. That’s what made me want to write How God Makes Men. Q) Why are there so few role models in our culture? Where can men look to find examples of godly fathers, husbands, and working professionals? A) There are TONS of men out there who are getting it right. They’re just not famous. They are quietly working out their faith by seeking God’s plan in the company of a few like-minded men. God’s plan is made up of strikingly relevant, time-tested lessons written down and preserved for us in the Bible. It pulsates with stories about men who released and sustained the passion of their faith. They became the men God created them to be. However, it’s shocking how many of these life-changing principles are gathering dust. It’s as though we’re afraid to tell men, “Following Christ is harder than it looks and takes longer than expected. What were the obstacles they faced? What held them back? How did God get them uncoiled? And what was their part? Q) Which biblical hero is your favorite, and what do we learn from him about living a powerful life? A) Wow! That’s like asking me which of my children I love the most! How about, I love them all equally but for different reasons. From Abraham, we learn about faith—that God makes men by showing us how we can believe Him anyway in the face of what seems like impossible circumstances. Joseph teaches us about perseverance—that God makes men by orchestrating even the toughest circumstances of our lives for a greater good. Moses teaches us about transformation—how God makes men by taking us through a humbling process that fundamentally changes the way we think. From Gideon we learn about real strength—and see that God makes men by turning our weakness into strength in such a striking way that only He can get the glory. The sobering story of David reminds us about discipline—how God makes men by doing whatever it takes to correct and restore us when we go astray. We can turn to Solomon to learn about true happiness—that God makes men by making it impossible for us to find lasting happiness in any pursuit apart from Him. Buddy, well, that’s different. Where Harry softened me up in many respects, Buddy did the opposite, showing me that you have to be tough and committed and completely devoted to your flock. They were some tough lessons to learn, especially given his methods, but I’m glad I had him as my teacher—mostly. From Nehemiah, we learn about how God calls men to action—that God makes men by turning what breaks our hearts into a passionate calling to help redeem some broken part of His world. In the story of Job, we gain insight into suffering—that God makes men by allowing us to gain through suffering what we can gain no other way. When we come to Peter, we learn the compelling principle of discipleship—how God makes men by a process of calling, equipping, and sending us so we can call, equip, and send others. Finally, through the passionate story of Paul, we learn about surrender—that God makes men by forging us into humble servants who are increasingly surrendered to the lordship of Jesus. Q) Why did you include the success and failures from these examples? A) I think God knew that no man would be able to relate to a “perfect†man in the Bible. By showing their flaws, we can see that these men are not so different from us. In fact, after a thorough reading of the Bible, we can conclude that if God didn’t use flawed men, He would have any to use!

Very good book for challenging men to be the man God wants us to be. The principles all need to be part of our lives. The men of the Bible are real. My favorite is Moses who actually, seven times, tried to get out of what God wanted him to do. The men of the Bible were human, made mistakes and yet, still followed God. They are a great example for us today.
I have been a Christian for many years and this year was a very different year for me. I moved away from my home town of Houston to Dallas, got married and started working after I graduated college in December. Being in the corporate world is something didn't expect. I always thought I was going to be someone who was involved in ministry. I started reading this book and right away it started making me look at my life in a more eternal perspective than I had been looking. I love that it compares us to men in the bible. Because the men in the bible are really just ordinary men who sin, doubt, have good days and bad. God uses them and their situations for His Glory. It is crazy because I know these stories I just didn't look at them the way Patrick Morley discussed them in the book. I started making me look at my life and how he has used me and my life to bring Him the Glory. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!!!
This book is great! I thank God for using Patrick Morley to write this book about how He makes men. The ten epic stories of how God used these men and how we are able to apply these lessons to our lives has inspired me greatly. This book has encouraged me not only to keep living by God's Word but to encourage other men to do so as well. Thanks, and great work! I also purchased "Man Alive" which I just noticed is from the same author. Looking forward to reading it.
In an age where masculinity is scorned and relegated to anachronism, where metrosexual trends are all the fashion and the entire male persona and identity have been stripped of all that we know to be biblical and good, Morley conducts an excellent study of the biblical notion of maleness. This is essential for the effective functioning of happy, fulfilled families and the raising of children. He shows biblical men, flaws and all, and presents a fine picture of what God wants men to be.
The content of this book is valid. It resonated with me while discussing Jib. Yet, it is Sunday School lessons for those new to the faith. Still, the final chapter is challenging and, I feel, should have the first half pasted at the book's beginning. We read this for a men's group and have been pleased with the teachings.
Love the book. Just what I was looking for to interest men's small groups. Consistently crawl through the pages with various groups of men. Rarely finish a chapter in a session! Offers much for thought and conversation as well as prompts questions men face about their lives. Have used it several times, each time with great success and participation. Each of the10 chapters highlight a separate biblical character and develop a major principle all men can benefit from. I believe this book is a very useful mentoring tool whether you are engaged with Christian or non-Christian men. God's principles have no boundaries.
How God makes men: 10 epic stories. 10 proven principles by Patrick Morley is the finest book I have ever read by Mr. Morley. He summarizes the lives of 10 men warts and all lets you know about the lives of some men that you have heard of but probably do not know or just haven't looked into the depths of their stories. The greatest example in this book to me was Gideon.. I knew the name Gideon from a Beatles song I knew the name Gideon from Bibles and hotels but for some reason I had never heard the story of Gideon never read the story of Gideon and it was enlightening. Any man reading this review should read this book. It does not matter what faith you are or even if you have no faith this is a good book.
I have always enjoy Patrick Morley's books! The first book I read was MAN IN THE MIRROR! Since then, I've read many of his books and distributed many in the churches I've pastored. HOW GOD MAKES MEN will be one I will read and re-read. I like his illustrations and his treatment of the Bible.
