I bought the Kindle version of this book, and I think a print copy might be better. It's sometimes hard to get a good look at pictures and illustrations with kindle editions. That's why I gave it three stars. It's probably worthy of 4.The book covers the 'basics', and has a few special styles, as in the picture on the cover.You'll need some "tools" to actually do the job and add the finishing touches. Recommendations for types of tools, or websites where to get them, etc. would have been nice.

I bought this for my grand niece - the only horse person in our family :( I'm doing pretty much anything I can to encourage her. I thought she would enjoy braiding her ponies and her mom's horse's manes and tails. I included in the package a braiding kit with tools, rubber bands, ribbons, etc.. I really appreciated that you can hang this book up as a ready reference while braiding.

I had often admired the great braid jobs at shows and in horse photos. This book tells you everything you need and need to know to be a successful groom/braider. From technique, to tools this book has it all. The publisher was clever enough to make it durable enough to be barn and show worthy. It will stand up to the rigors of the tack trunk where I consider it to be a must! Riders and grooms of every discipline will benefit from this great book.

Liked the equipment list, the tips were great! I have a pony in harness, took a couple of ideas for tails. Nice examples for several disciplines. Very good instructions, pictures were good, too. I'd recommend it

I can't wait to try these out! I have a mustang whose mane knots with the wind, so I wanted to learn to braid it but I wanted variety. I'll definitely be trying all of these on her for the fun of it :D (also, the braid on the front IS in the book. It's called a diamond braid but has a second name. I only glanced at it but on my iPhone kindle app it's 65% through). I like that it has various disciplines in here, too.

I Love this book. So much so that I've bought it 3 times... I keep giving it to horse people then find I need it... Beautifully done and easy to understand. You'll be a pro in no time..

This is a well put together book that is spiral bound. The pictures are in full color and a good size. There are a lot of different braids with instructions and pictures.

Exactly what I was looking for! There are braid ideas for riding horses of almost every discipline (western pleasure, dressage, jumper, etc.), lead-line horses, carriage horses, and drafts in collars. There's a few braids and styles that are just "for fun." Easily written and good illustrations.

I love how this story expanded and enriched and illuminated my ideas about angels. I couldn't put this book down and immediately ordered the next book in the series, then the next, and the next. Now I'm reading through the series a second time and understanding even more about the realm of angels who are definitely all around us and who are right beside me here on Earth. It is so refreshing to discover a book that has a deeper spiritual lesson for young adults (though older adults will love it, too!) If looked into deeply, some of the lessons that are taught at the "Earth Angel Training Academy" hold the power to change the way we look at life, and allow for greater happiness. Readers who won't connect with the spiritual philosophy, however, will find the story to be an enjoyable journey into a beautiful fantasy world. The author does a great job of blending fiction with philosophy in an engaging, fun way. Worth the read!

wonderfully written book that delves into the spirituality of mankind

I loved the book, and ready to start the next one in the series. Michelle Gordon has a real knack for writing a great story.

The concept of Earth Angels was something very new to me. It is so intriguing and has made me really think about my worldview. I have since done more research on it and think that Michelle's books are a great introduction to it . The books weave in the concepts of Earth Angels and humans 'awakening' in a way that is simultaneously enjoyable to read and thought-provoking. As usual, Michelle's writing has produced some great quotes. I read this book on a Kindle (which is something, because I rarely read books on my Kindle) and made frequent use of the 'note' feature to keep track of quotes and lessons that I loved. I related to some of the characters for different reasons, so I really got into the story. I already have the second book in the series, so I'm about to move on to that one. All in all, this is yet another great book by the author and I recommend it for anyone who is interested in the topic of Earth Angels.

Velvet is an old soul who runs an academy whose main purpose is to train angels, fairies, aliens, and other beings in the ways of human life. These beings are then born into the human world with the intent of awakening people to be good and to do right, in an attempt to make the earth a better place. When earth begins to spiral downward, an influx of students crowd the academy in an attempt to get to earth to save the human race before it's too late. This book follows Velvet, the headmaster, as she prepares herself and her students for the possible Golden Age of the earth. Through the process she experiences many ups and downs, enjoys new found love, deals with devastating loss, and begins remembering things about her past that she doesn't recall ever forgetting.This book was enjoyable and very well written. Geared towards a younger audience, it can be motivational and enlightening. It is based around the idea of reincarnation and the afterlife, and refers to more than one Supreme Being, a god and a goddess. That being said, if you are at all religious, you may have difficulty with some of the subject matter, as I did in parts. As an American I grew up understanding the Zionist narrative about Israel and Palestine as fact. We never were exposed to the other side of the story, and when we do get glimpses, our media writes it off as the victimized Israel defending themselves against the hostile, terrorist Arabs (read: Muslims). My husband found a video of Miko Peled speaking and it was one of the most important hours of my life; I immediately bought this book to get more of the story. Peled's tales of his father's experiences in the Army, growing up as a committed Zionist, and coming to terms with Israel's true actions and motives as he got older are illuminating. As a Jew, He exhibits that anti-Zionism has no relation to anti-semitism, another myth with which we have been brainwashed into submission.Every American should read this book and learn what our media has been keeping hidden for so long. It will uncover your humanity and change your perception of Palestine/Israel forever.God bless Miko Peled for his courage in speaking the truth against the powers that be.

This was difficult to read. As one who was brought up to believe Israel was in the right for spiritual reasons, then hear that they behave so poorly- contrary, in fact - to the God they claim..... I am heartbroken.Many of the names of the leaders I have heard & thought they were great & moral men. Now I find that they truly are as bad as the Nazis.But I find some peace is realizing that Zionism is NOT Judaism, & that being anti-Zion is NOT being anti-Semitic.

How it used ethnically based oppression for decades to achieve it's goal of creating a Jewish majority in Palestine.I, of course, especially loved how Israel claims the same bulls*** over and over again for decades, and the world still sits silently by."To make things worse, Israel claimed that notices were given to the local population that the attack was imminent and that people should leave areas that were going to be bombed. One can only imagine a mother or father sitting for days anticipating the onslaught, yet knowing full well that there was no escaping it."Borders closed, no bomb shelter luxuries that the Israelis boast (for those pesky Hamas rockets), nowhere to hide themselves or their children. And sitting there waiting. While the Israelis sit at the border and view the bombing as if it were a display of beautiful fireworks.".. was a continuation of an ongoing war, a war that aims to complete the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. I heard stories of people who drove to the Gaza border to sit on lawn chairs and view the bombing."The searing hypocrisy of the Israeli military and police even when they were trying to arrest him shocked me."Look, he is an Israeli citizen and he has rights. It's not a Palestinian that I can just beat up and throw in prison."There is an entire population of people. Who act like that. Think like that. Justify their heinous crimes like that. Do EXACTLY what was done to their ancestors.The Holocaust lasted for 4 years (1941-45, the systematic genocide of the Jewish people), they had been persecuted since 1933 before that. The world is still reeling from the atrocities committed. The Palestinians have been enduring their holocaust for decades more. Will the future ring with the screams of the dying innocents for centuries to come? Or will history turn a blind eye to this as the world is doing now? Will we be telling our children that there once were Palestinians who lived on Palestinian land? Who had their own culture and identity? But are no more? Will we all continue treating Israelis as EQUAL victims? As bizarre and ridiculous and illogical as that is?Miko Peled is way more hopeful than I about a resolution to this. I see no light at the end of this dark and bloody tunnel. I see no way the world will EVER be able to make up for ignoring the plight of the Palestinian people. I see no way that most Israelis, who deliberately do NOT want to educate themselves on facts, will ever see the truth.But I find a glimmer of hope in the stories of the hundreds of Israelis who have searched for the truth themselves, and not trusted their ruling class (like none of us should).. the groups of Jews who condemn the "state" of Israel. The ones who realize that Palestinians are their fellow human beings. And there is no greater reason to NOT kill them.This book is a MUST read for anyone who wants a harsh, but real, look at the situation. Miko Peled, and MANY Israelis after and before him who spoke of similar things, have NO reason to lie. And have always backed up their information with facts. The blind to the truth Zionists can condemn them as traitors and liars. But the truth is, they have NO reason to do so. And EVERY reason to share the truth with the world. It made me cry more times than I can count. But I would read it all over again just to educate myself. And to realize that this, unlike what our politicians tell us, is NOT a complicated issue. It is simple. It is straightforward. And it comes down to the world condoning the massacre of innocents. That is it. That is all.I stand with Palestine. (even though I will probably never have the strength of heart that they do, to continue going on and making a life for themselves from the rubble and debris and blood soaked streets the Israeli occupiers leave behind.)

I am a 68 year old New Zealander and have been aware of the Palestine/Israel story since I was a small girl, can remember hearing the celebrations on the radio and the quote "a land without a people and a people without a land" I presume this was when the United Nations gave Palestine to the Jews. Even then I felt sorry for the Palestinians and have ever since. I have to say I was always in the minority. Just finished reading this book! It makes me feel sick to the stomach to realise what horrors the Palestinians have endured! Worse than I ever imagined. Everyone needs to read this! I hope someday in the not to distant future, that the Israeli government is held to account.

highly recommend this to anyone that wants to know the truth about what Israel is actually doing. Miko is not the only Israeli officer to come out and tell the truth about his government.

The stories of specific Palestinian treatment by the Israel Army and those at the top were very disturbing. However, I am glad I read this and glad that it was written by an Israeli that had government and military ties. It made the unbelievable story real, and made me listen to the rhetoric differently.

Jacqui Greene Haas has been the athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Ballet since 1989, is the director of dance medicine academic seminars (www.dancemedicine.net), and is the director of the dance medicine division of Wellington Orthopedics in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she treats dancers in physical therapy, postsurgical rehabilitation, and general conditioning.    A former professional ballet dancer with Boston Ballet, Southern Ballet Theatre, Tampa Ballet, New Orleans Ballet, and Cincinnati Ballet, Jacqui holds a BA in dance from the University of South Florida and an athletic training certificate from the University of Cincinnati. She also has a certificate in Pilates instruction from St. Francis Memorial Hospital dance division in San Francisco and a certificate in Pilates rehabilitation from Polestar Education in Miami, Florida. Great book. Very well written with many warm up techniques are for use not only in dance but for yoga too. My students in yoga have been loving the core warms ups that I added from here. This week will add some of the hamstring ones. Very detailed use of muscles and bone structure. A must have for intelligent students and teachers that care about the longevity of their students and bodies. I don't always agree with the way she uses breath because it is often contrary to what I learned in yoga certification so I do what feels better and right for me.

This is exactly how I needed to learn. Ballet teachers have various metaphorical ways of explaining things ("long", "light", "straight") that don't actually map well only how human bones and muscles actually work. This helps put what my teachers are telling me into a context that makes sense to me. (It's certainly not a substitute for teaching, just another view of the subject that works well with the way I understand anatomy.) It's even improved my running: running coaches also use metaphors I couldn't apply (the "hanging from a string at the top of the head" explanation of posture never made a lick of sense to me). I have a better understanding of how the core muscles fit in to the overall biomechanics of dance and sport.

This is exactly what I wanted. It has a chapter that describes the various body parts wit practical exercises for each. Great information for someone hoping to prevent injury whether they are a pro or a social dancer. I also think this is a great resource for teachers to better address individual students if they are having issues with a specific body area or injury. I am a partner dancer and found this information immensely helpful in my own dance practices as well as with friends and students.

Absolutely wonderful! I was injured and needed extensive PT -- found that this book more than filled the gaps in PT. If fact, have made more progress using this book, so stopped PT. Provides great illustrations and exercises. Descriptions and illustrations help individuals that are self-motivated to more accurately select and utilize exercises by visualizing and focusing on anatomy needed for specific moves.

I was thrilled to find an illustrated book on, specifically, classically trained dancers. There are so many fitness/ weight lifting/ running , etc. magazines out there that one that focuses on not just " the largest muscle groups" but the intricacies of dance movement, is such a useful and fascinating find. I would definitely suggest this book to all dancers that want specific areas to work on for a better aesthetic.

This book has been enormously helpful to me as an older, amateur dancer especially now during recovery from rotator cuff surgery. I have a medical education & over 30 years of clinical practice experience. I found the diagrams & text with focus on integrated function for dance to be very unique & helpful in improving turnout, arabesque & port de bras. I recently underwent rotator cuff surgery & struggling with some advanced integrated movements to restore my ballet arm positions. My therapy team is unfamiliar with my problem and we are using this book to guide restorative exercises. My therapy team loves the text & diagrams so much, I purchased a book for them. I found the diagrams & text to be superior to my medical textbooks! I highly recommend this book to dancers & therapists for improvement & injury recovery! It is sooo well done! I keep it in my dance bag!

I've been taking an adult ballet class for about a year and a half with minimal no previous ballet experience and this book has been incredibly helpful in clearly presenting the muscle groups of the body and how the body works while dancing.While none of the strengthening exercises or stretches are new to me (I've been an athlete a long time and practice yoga and Pilates regularly) it was nice to see how the exercises and stretches work each muscle group and what ballet movements those muscle groups are used for.I have recommended this book to my fellow adult ballet classmates and they seem to be enjoying it as well.

This book is my favorite quick reference book. From taking a kinesiology class, most of the information I already knew and from taking dance for several years, many of the stretches I knew as well. However, I love using this book as a quick reference book for referring back to the muscles that control various movements. It helps me remember the names of muscles that are not regularly referred to in a dance class. For me, the book did not have any new and different information. However, for someone who has never taken a kinesiology class and would like to further a dance career or just learn specific stretches to improve technique this is the perfect book for. I Highly recommend this book for every dancer, it is set up in an organized way that is easy to ready and very informative.

I found this book to have some excellent recipes within. However, if you are looking for a major primer on oils or extensive information, this is NOT the book for you. This book is designed to be for someone newer to essential oils who does not want to create their own recipes or someone who has "been around the block" but wants something simple to help them learn more and try different things with a reduced risk of error.Other reviewers have complained about the choices of oils and the expense. I found her list to be fairly accurate but VERY different from her starter kit for the free online course she offers through Aromahead Institute.My recommendations to other readers: (and potential readers!)1: Read the ENTIRE BOOK and decide which formulas you wish to try. THEN purchase your oils accordingly. This will save the expense of oils you do not like, do not want to use, or do not plan on using. Start small and pick 2-3 recipes instead of the whole kit n' caboodle.2: She recommends MANY times in the book to research your oils. This book is not intended to be for that research. Know that ahead of time and be ready to invest in a good book on essential oils and other herbal remedies. Until you are able to make that investment, there are many locations online, including Aromahead Institute and reputable online companies that sell essential oils, absolutes, and hydrasols which can help you.3: This is NOT meant to be the end of your journey in essential oils. Be ready to keep studying and learning. This is the start of the path, not the final destination.4: Last but not least, please learn proper safety protocols and USE them. For your safety and the safety of those you love.

I think this is a very good book but too little information for the price. I’m aware of Andrea Butje’s well respected and well earned reputation in the aromatherapy community. I just received this book and am disappointed with how thin it is. I know it has quality information in it, I’m just very disappointed that it does not have much more quality information and recipes. If I had seen this on a bookshelf in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it.

I just got this book and read mostly through it in one evening. It's not a thick book obviously, but it is packed with great recipes using essential oils for the home and your health. The author lists a "starter kit" list of essential oils if you're unsure of what you need and all the recipes have a descriptor of what they can be used for or any cautions of use. She also includes a list of where to buy essential oils and bottling products (this may seem silly because you can search online but amazingly the 3 websites she listed for oils don't automatically come up on the Google searches I've done and I think the quality of these products are probably better than some of the other sites that Google DID provide on the first search page). There aren't a lot of details in this book about how essential oils are extracted or too much about safety other than a few general mentions here and there but it is exactly as described on the book description - a recipe book! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a way to eliminate some chemical cleaners in your home, discover new lotion and beauty recipes, or for some simple diffusion recipes to help with cold and flu season or everyday living.

I bought the ebook for my collection of aromatherapy authors. Andrea Butje does an awesome job of creating an easy to read and easy to understand book on how to use essential oils in your home, office, traveling, and outside use. I find it an amazingly great resource and one that I use often. The author provides purchasing tips, blending techniques, and dilution standards. I love the abundance of recipes and the advise that one should start to blend beyond these recipes because it is all about the knowledge learned, application, and safety in the use of each essential oil. Branching out to discover and connect with new oils is what I have been doing. Love the book and it should be on everyone's bookshelf. Thanks to Andrea I am enjoying converting my home and daily living around the substitution of commercial cleaners to those nature developed for us.

I guess I was expecting something more than what this book is. It's okay, the recipes are okay, but you can find recipes like that on the web for free. I don't know, I thought there would be at least a description or background info about the EO's used, but sadly no. I guess the book is what it says, a recipe book and I can't be mad at that.

This is a great beginner book with lots of nice easy instructions. It was thinner book than I thought, but Andre Butje writes a well balanced easy to understand book on essential oils. I will use this often!

I don't want to be pressed with marketing for specific brands and their blends but instead want to know how individual oils work singly or in blends. This book does just that. Not only does the book cover necessary tools but basic oils to start with and a suggested list of what to acquire over time. There are several recipes in the book and they are designated as to the appropriate level of expertise needed to blend them. It's a quick read but still an excellent resource that I keep coming back to review.

This book is fantastic. Tons of great recipes authored by a truly evidence-based aromatherapist. Let this book be a gateway into the massive body of work Andrea Butje has bestowed upon the aromatherapy world. I am a student in several of her online aromatherapy training programs. She provides a sane and beautifully effective path for the science minded individual through the often misunderstood and underestimated world of aromatherapy. I have invested a lot in her training and haven't regretted a minute of it.

It's very professional looking, and I love the idea. I'm just sad that my kids won't get much out of it. Despite it saying that it is for Junior Primary (ages 3-7), it is all words. There are no pictures at all. I have a nursery age child and a 3 year old. I was really hoping for pictures that they could look at and color. The only coloring pages are just words to color. I'm afraid that it won't keep their attention at all. I think I'm going to keep it, but I'm disappointed.

I bought the senior primary workbook for my 9 year old and this one for my 3 and 7 year old's. Well, the 7 year old's will be fine...I think...They are above grade level in reading, but I'm still not quite sure how well they'll do with it. We'll give it a shot, anyway.The 5 year old though, not a chance. She's just barely learning how to read. I thought this would actually be a Jr. primary workbook, since it says as much, but comparing it to the senior primary version, it's practically the same thing, but with a few fewer words in each activity. I'm guessing the author isn't too experienced with kids in this age range? If they are, those kids were some pretty dang, advanced kids!!Still. All that being said, for the kids who can keep up with it I really do love it. Well thought out. Plenty of activities that are entertaining while still including some that get them thinking and where they have to pay attention to the lessons.

This is fantastic! The first couple weeks of CFM were great at our house, but then the kids got bored, so I ordered 2 senior (8&10 yr olds) and 1 junior (6 yr old) books. I’m so glad I did. We have ten minutes for studies in the morning, today my kids asked me if they could have more time! So I am planning to do some studies after school. It’s great to see my kids engaged in the come follow me program.Your child does need to be a reader to enjoy this book. My 6 year old reads at a 2-3 grade level and this is perfect for him. I’m glad I read the reviews before I ordered and did not get one for my 4 year old. We just use a New Testament coloring book for him.Note to the author: I would love to see a ‘sunbeam’ version of these books!!!

My 6-year-old daughter loves to do this on Sundays. The book follows the same pattern each week, so the same types of activities (crossword puzzle, handwriting practice, coloring page, etc.) with a different scriptural theme. I really appreciate the creator offering this at cost and felt it was a really good value.

My daughter is obsessed with this. She loves looking up scriptures and coloring it. I would have given in 5 stars had I realized it wasn’t good for all junior primary. It is way above my 4 year old but perfect for my 7 year old.

This is such a great book for teaching children the New Testament. It adds a sense of fun to the scriptures. Even my 3 yr old enjoys doing it with help.

I've only read to page 63 but I'm ready to put the book down. I have kept reading up until now because I've been waiting for it to get better. I want it to get better. I want Ellis to be done with putting George Washington down and looking at him through such a negative lens. I want him to prove that he really believes what he states on pg. 39: "Though he was still developing...the outline of Washington's mature personality was already assuming a discernible shape." I know some biographers either over-appreciate their subjects and others under-appreciate them. This author definitely is under appreciating his. After more than 20 pages I've seen no sign of Ellis viewing Washington's weaknesses and mistakes as indicators of a learning and growing process. Instead he seems to be openly judging him from a fixed mindset. By page 63, the picture of George Washington that is emerging from Ellis's pen is a selfish, two-faced, conniving man. He's shown as a fanatic who sees conspiracy where there is none. He weaves a plot that convicts Washington of developing into a conspirator. The author's word choices and assumptions of Washington's motivation seem to be revealing the author's own motives and character, rather than Washington's. Repeatedly, he draws unsupported conclusions about Washington's motivation. If I hadn't read another biography by William Roscoe Thayler, before this one, I would be of the opinion after reading Ellis's book that George Washington was a bad guy.Examples of this author's wording and conclusions:"In addition to his familiar themes--petitions were worse than worthless, abstract arguments must be accompanied by economic pressures--now he detected a full-blooded conspiracy against American liberty." pg. 62 Is conspiracy (a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful) not a good understanding of the entire relationship between America and Great Britain during this time period? There were secret plots on both sides because both had different goals and motives regarding the future of America. Why does Ellis mock Washington for seeing this conspiracy as if he were a fanatic?"(A Lukewarm Episcopalian, he never took Communion, tended to talk about 'Providence' or 'Destiny' rather than God, and--was this a statement?--preferred to stand rather than kneel when praying.)" pg 45 "was this a statement?" This is the author's insertion. Why lead the reader by the nose with the author's personal biases and conclusions?"...but nothing he ever did had a greater influence on the shape of his own life than the decision to marry Martha Dandridge Custis." pg 40 I was expecting to hear how her faith and goodness helped him develop his own. But the author proceeds to talk about all of her money.Ellis speaks of rumors about Washington's fidelity to his wife and then says they were never verified. pg 44 But in my opinion, even speaking about unfounded rumors and gossip is totally disrespectful to anyone, let alone to someone whom we Americans owe so much."For the rest of his life, all arguments based on the principle of mutual trust devoid of mutual interest struck him as sentimental nonsense." pg. 39 I totally disagree. Looking at his life as a whole, he sacrificed much more for his country than he ever received from them or from us, who are his beneficiaries, who enjoy the resultant freedom and order of this country."Two features of the emerging Washington personality come into focus here: first, a thin-skinned aversion to criticism, especially when the criticism questioned his personal motive, which he insisted were beyond reproach; second, a capacity to play politics effectively while claiming total disinterest in the game." pg. 29 "which he insisted" and "while claiming" Insinuating that Washington was deliberately dishonest and two-faced. Could Ellis not say instead, "It is evident that Washington was still struggling with his ability to take criticism. In all of his actions he strove to do what he believed and understood at that time to be right but he still was learning and growing. His efforts to make a difference in the political arena were motivated by a sincere belief that he knew what was best. As a Virginian land owner, he empathized with others land owners like him and in so doing learned over time to see his own needs and conflicts as similar to others'.""Finally, this is the kind of man who will regard any failure to meet his exacting standards as a personal affront and persistent failure as evidence of a conspiracy to deprive him of what is rightfully his. Pity the London merchant who has to deal with him." pg. 47"But while most outspoken opponents of the Stamp Act, those whom Washington called 'the Speculative part,' emphasized the constitutional argument, his response more directly reflected his personal experience with Cary & Company." pg 52 AND "Once again there was a personal edge to that conviction." pg. 58 These and other similar statements attribute Washington's motives for revolution as purely mercenary. Ellis doesn't choose to write with empathy: making a living and building security for posterity was and still is a large part of the American dream."HIs singular triumph, in fact the result of multiple efforts over thirteen years of complex negotiations, was largely a product of his status as a veteran of the French and Indian War." pg. 56 This is just one of many instances where Ellis attributes the cause of a result for us. He says Washington's singular triumph was largely a product of his status."Washington was relentless in pressing his claims..." pg 56 Ellis chooses the word "relentless" which, combined with the portrait he continues to paint of this man, makes us believe that he was not only selfish, but relentlessly and heartlessly selfish. Where is the growth mindset he promised us on page 39? It is only to be found in one or two sentences but the rest is negative, critical, and disrespectful. I don't recommend this book.I know people aren't perfect, especially those we revere. In fact I love them all the more when I see they weren't and then learn from their mistakes. I have no problem seeing weaknesses and mistakes in George Washington but this author is choosing not only to focus in with a high power microscope on all them but to attribute a bunch more that are based on his personal speculation. He does not allow the reader to make those attributions and assessments herself. He leads her by the nose to see things in the negative light that he sees them. He presents evidence with a slanted, biased view that prevents us from seeing the true character of George Washington.

At ~275 pages before the acknowledgements, this book naturally leaves one wanting for detail, but is enjoyable and a great introduction or summation of some of the key points in Washington's eventful life. Prior to picking a Washington bio (having been prompted by McCullough's 1776), I had considered just plunging into Chernow's Washington: A Life, but feeling 800+ pages a bit more than I had confidence to chew, I opted to ease into it with His Excellency, and found myself immediately ordering Washington: A Life upon finishing. I do not regret it, as I enjoyed the read, but would advise someone in a similar situation to just go ahead and read Chernow's take - I both prefer his style and find the subject of such interest that it requires the greater level of detail that is provided in Washington: A Life.It's a good little book (paperback) that is easy to throw in a bag and a quick read that I will likely return to from time-to-time, but I would recommend Chernow's or McCullough's works before it.

I really enjoyed this book. I had neglected our 1st President since high school and feel I learned a lot from this book. Looking for something more in depth, I am now reading "Washington, a Life" by Chernow. This is a more detailed look, but I might not have read it without starting on "His Excellency, George Washington." This book is an excellent place to start and an easy read. It is also about 1/2 the lengthj of the Chernow book, so start there.

Not having read any biographies specifically about our first president, I was impressed to find one that looked good without being over 500 pages. Ellis’ work came also with the promises attached to having won two Pulitzer Prizes for “Founding Brothers” and “American Sphinx”. I was not disappointed.Reading reviews, I noticed that more than one reviewer chastised Mr Ellis for “disrespect” and what amounts to negativism in regard to Washington. I always read negative reviews because I usually learn more about whether I will find the book interesting and worth my time by the kind of criticism it draws. Deciding to try it mostly because of this criticism, I decided I do not want a white-wash of any historical personage. I want an even handed presentation free from either animosity or excess kindness. I want the truth. Again, I was not disappointed. I find the criticisms completely without foundation. Yes, Mr Washington is presented as having romantic feelings for Mrs Fairfax, but just as truly, it is stated that he resisted all inclinations toward her. Rather than defaming the President, Mr Ellis made him more courageous and admirable. I found no slander in the book; I found no excess criticism or character assassination. Rather, I discovered a man who changed and matured over the early years of his life and learned to control his passions, make wise decisions, and who went on to become the most revered of our forefathers, simply because he WAS totally human and yet controlled himself as well as, if not better than, anyone else of whom I have read.I am most impressed with this presentation of George Washington. He is no longer a marble mystery shrouded in sweet-smelling words to me. He is a real, living human being. He is, in my opinion, the most impressive human being I have ever read about, other than the only human in history to actually be perfect, Jesus Christ. Please don’t misunderstand: I am not comparing him to the Lord. I am simply saying he is a most impressive man.As for the content of the book, Ellis says only a small amount about Washington’s youth, gives good coverage to his activities, finances, personality and thoughts during the period of the French & Indian War through the start of the American Revolution. Ellis’ discussion and analysis is logical, easy to follow and helpful. I would classify this biography as being one of the most thorough biographies I have read, yet did not find it tedious or laden with excessive irrelevance. I never got tired of the story or anxious to finish. As a result, I am thoroughly satisfied with this work.Thank you, Mr. Ellis, for introducing me to His Excellency, George Washington. I am even more indebted than I ever realized to our most illustrious forefather.This book is highly recommended.Five satisfied stars.
