This book captured my attention from the first sentence. I simply adored Beatrice, the duke, and all the characters, really. It was just a pleasure to read. Ms. Messina did an outstanding job of keeping my interest equally engaged by the mystery as by the developing relationship between Beatrice and Kesgrave. I appreciated very much her wit and sense of humor as reflected by her intelligent and imaginative characters in both thought and dialogue.
This young (well, by Regency standards she is on the shelf and no longer a marriage prospect) woman is both charming and a bit of a busybody. All female sleuths of the early 18th century would be viewed this way -- since it is so indelicate to investigate murder. Beatrice is not penniless, which I liked -- she lives on the goodwill of close family members and has a decent wardrobe. I liked also her self-confidence and perseverance. What I did not like was her intense dislike of Duke Kesgrave (who gladly serves as a co-investigator) simply because he's a withdrawn and discreet member of the aristocracy. She mused WAY too often about how pleasurable it would be to throw food items at him. This got old. Even given her comparatively humble position in life, I thought it would be more believable had she warmed up to him a little more. Will gladly go on to the next book.
Absolutely fell in love with this story. The first couple pages were a little wordy but once I got the start of the mystery, I found myself laughing, smiling, and everything else, right along with the characters. Sure, some of it was a little far-fetched, with the behavior between Bea and the Duke, but it was still plausible, at least within the setting the author created. Loved it so much, I went on to devour the next two books and I can't wait for the fourth in the series.
I loved this book and look forward to reading the entire series. Lynn Messina writes as though she were born and bred in the British Regency era, even though I surmise that she’s an American. It was all so authentic , but like one of the reviewers stated, there was too much of the food throwing angst with Beatrice. One time of temptation to throw food at the duke would have been enough. I love how the relationship with the duke developed. I just wish Bea had not always felt she had to verbally spar with the duke constantly. That got a little tiresome. Matching wits with him was fine, but I felt like Bea was always trying to prove herself— too much. But these mysteries are so well written that I can overlook those parts. Keep up the great writing Lynn Messina😊
I had a hard time getting into the story. For the first third to half of the Book, I was indifferent, and could have easily stopped reading. I’m glad I didn’t. During the second half of the book, I found myself caring about the characters and really enjoying the book. I became attached to the characters and wanted to continue their stories, so I read books two and three of the series. They didn’t disappoint, and I’d love to read more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I won't give away the plot--it wouldn't be fair to do so. However, I can say that the characters are fun and the dialogue, both internal and between the characters, is well done. I noticed only a few errors, typos, not doubt.I like the book enough to read the next in the series, immediately, actually. Apparently, the author is quite well known, just not to me.
Love love these three books.......the dialog is absolutely delicious. And Beatrice becoming more and more sure of herself is a cause to rejoice. There are so many great moments in the stories, please read them yourself. And I hope this isn’t the end of the stories. Please say it isn’t.
I envy the author's ability to write witty dialogue. I could never speak so well, let alone write dialogue as well as the author does. The dialogue and plotline kept me entertained. Glad to have read this book.
