The Beatles: The Biography, by Bob Spitz

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. With this massive opus, veteran music journalist Spitz (Dylan: A Biography) tells the definitive story of the band that sparked a cultural revolution. Calling on books, articles, radio programs and primary interviews, Spitz follows the band from each member's family origins in working-class Liverpool to the band's agonizing final days. Spitz's unflinching biography reveals that not only did the Beatles pioneer a new era of rock but they also were on the cutting edge of rock star excess, from their 1961 amphetamine-fueled sets in the clubs of Hamburg to their eventual appetites for stronger drugs, including marijuana, LSD, cocaine and, eventually for John Lennon, heroin. Sex was also part of the equation; in 1962, when the band cut its first audition for Sir George Martin, all four members had a venereal disease, and both John's and Paul McCartney's girlfriends were pregnant. Spitz details the tangled web of bad business deals that flowed from novice manager Brian Epstein (though the heavily conflicted Epstein can be forgiven since he was in uncharted territory). Although this is a hefty volume steeped in research, Spitz writes economically, and with flair, letting the facts and characters speak for themselves. In doing so, he captures an ironic sadness that accompanied the Beatles' runaway success—how their dreams of stardom, once realized, became a prison, forcing the band to spend large parts of their youth in hotel rooms to avoid mobs and to stage elaborate escapes from literally life-threatening situations after appearances. As with all great history writing, Spitz both captures a moment in time and humanizes his subjects. While some will blanch at the unsettling dark sides of the Beatles, most will come to appreciate the band even more for knowing the incredible personal odysseys they endured. 32 pages of b&w photos. From Bookmarks Magazine

Edited down from a staggering 2,700 pages, The Beatles took eight years of research and writing. But with some 500 books chronicling their lives, loves, and legacy, one would think The BeatlesÂ’ story had been adequately told. Adequate isnÂ’t authoritative, however, and most critics believe that Spitz, a former manager for Bruce Springsteen and author of Dylan: The Biography, has synthesized his subject masterfully. Though some would prefer hagiography (Charles Taylor of Newsday seems particularly aggrieved the biography doesnÂ’t live up to the BeatlesÂ’ artistic standard—but what has?), the general consensus is that if itÂ’s pop-culture history you desire, The Beatles tops the charts.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

You really get your money's worth on this one. Nearly 1000 pages, and pretty much something I never knew before about The Beatles on every one. Spitz really makes you feel like you are right there, with The Beatles during the wild tours, with them in the studio, and with them for all the bickering and for the good times. I don't want to give too much away, but just to say that this is probably the best biography I ever read. Spitz really took his time in developing the characters so you felt like you knew them by the end. I would like to read more by this author, but it doesn't seem like he has written much else recently.

I can't stop thinking about this book. It is so amazing to be a Beatles fan and then read about each member's history and how hard they worked and what they went through before they actually became the Beatles as a musical success story. There are many layers of depth here and it puts the music in a different kind of perspective. It's also mind blowing to realize that everyone in the band was 30 or less when they broke up. They lived many lifetimes before it ended and went through an amazing amount of heartache, hardship and turmoil. I found this to be a page turner!

Spitz gives us a very, very, very deeply researched book that moves along at a nice clip. Needs a wee bit of editing (the Beatles fan club's trip in Hamburg, for example, is a bit much) as the author is obviously an extreme fan - as any reader of this book needs to be. Luckily for his sales there's plenty of super-fans out there, including myself. The best part of the book was revealing how much a part of the process George Martin and his team of tech heads were to making the Beatles even better. The band used the studio as an instrument, and Martin & Pals were there to show them how to do so.Not a homily to the Fab Four as people - this book shows them as they were, warts and all. You did NOT want to meet Paul or John, not the most decent of people by a long stretch.Bottom line highly recommended...for a Beatles fan who wants to know everything (and I mean everything) about the Fab Four and their music.

Quite simply a gobsmacking read. This is the quintessential yarn of the 1960s - whatever was happening, the Beatles were in the forefront, often inadvertently. I fear a little for the accuracy despite my ignorance of 1960s Britain... the few times Spitz comes near something I do know about (e.g. Australia) he comes up with some real head scratchers (thumbs up is not really an obscene gesture down here), which tends to cast doubt on most of the rest of the text. Determining the truth must have been a nearly impossible task in so many aspects. But what the hell, it is such a rattling good tale brimming with larger than life, often tragic, characters. To say the least, John Lennon does not emerge as a very honourable human being, despite his posthumous deification... in stark contrast Ringo Starr is the one leading protagonist who retained his common humanity throughout the saga. Paul McCartney is portrayed as an ambiguous figure, the most intelligent and creative Beatle but with a broad ruthless streak, it's no surprise he has thrived into his senior years to become a national treasure as untouchable as Her Majesty, his sometime muse. I docked a star because of the frenetic finish to the book, I would have liked a more detailed account of the breakup and particularly its legal and personal aftermath, but it all ended as abruptly as I Want You (She's So Heavy) with McCartney's announcement in April 1970. The Beatles saga did not end then by a long chalk, it has resonances to this day. But overall, despite his tendency to occasionally lapse into rock journalese - driving beats, searing riffs, etc. - Bob Spitz, I love you.

In journalism, there is a phrase, "dumping your notebook," which means to put in a lot of rather dull and extraneous information just because you discovered it in your reporting. I became bored with this at times for that reason. I was more interested in the music than in which house they rented where. The tone is impersonal at times. Nevertheless, it did give me an in-depth history of the Beatles and their raging fame.

This is a very comprehensive guide for starting a medical practice. It includes step-by-step instructions for just about all aspects of getting started. That being said, I strongly advise that every doctor engage a good team of professionals. I don't think that you could read a book and open a practice. But as an overview to give you the big picture and make sure you're getting it all done - great!

Book is good. Some helpful info, but nothing mindblowing. Probably depends on how much research you have already done on starting up your own practice.

Professional success and business success require very different skills in any specialty. But medical practice owners have especially hard time because they often operate in adversarial environment, where patients sue them for malpractice and payers delay or underpay insurance claims.Unfortunately, most medical schools spend no time at all preparing doctors for starting a practice. Worse, the fresh entrepreneur is often unaware of missing knowledge and is unable to navigate the complexities of planning and protecting business, selecting adequate technology, managing staff, and most importantly, getting paid.Invest the time it takes you to read this book back into your daily practice. If you get through this book in fifteen hours, and if you use just three ideas out of hundreds, and if each one idea saves you just 1/100th of your daily working time and effort--that will be a savings of 60 hours per year, or a net annual profit on time invested of 300%.Do you know of any other investment that nets you 300% annually?Yuval Lirov, Practicing Profitability - Billing Network Effect for Revenue Cycle Control in Healthcare Clinics and Chiropractic Offices: Collections, Audit Risk, SOAP Notes, Scheduling, Care Plans, and Coding

This is a must read for any physician thinking about starting a medical practice. With shrinking reimbursement for medical services one may conclude, after reading this excellent guide, that a private practice start up is not an economically smart move.

Old Filth (Old Filth Trilogy), by Jane Gardam

From Publishers Weekly

British novelist Gardam has twice won the Whitbread and was shortlisted for the Man Booker. This, her 15th novel, was shortlisted in Britain for the Orange Prize; it outlines 20th-century British history through the life of Sir Edward Feathers, a barrister whose acronymic nickname provides the title: "Failed in London, Try Hong Kong." At nearly 80, Feathers, retired in Dorset after many years as a respected Hong Kong judge, is a hollow man with few real friends and a cold, sexless marriage that has just ended with the death of his wife, Betty. For the first time, "Filth" (as even Betty called him) delves into the past that produced him: a "Raj orphan" raised by a series of surrogates while his father worked in Singapore, Filth served briefly in WWII (guarding the Queen) and had a lackluster stint as a London barrister before emigrating. The flashbacks contrast British privilege and the chaos that ensues when the empire (especially Filth's childhood Malaya), starts to crumble. As Filth undertakes chaotic visits to his Welsh foster home and other sites, Gardam's sharp, acerbic style counterpoints Feathers's dryness. Well-rounded secondary figures further highlight his emptiness and that of empire. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From The New Yorker

This mordantly funny novel examines the life of Sir Edward Feathers, a desiccated barrister known to colleagues and friends as Old Filth (the nickname stands for "Failed in London Try Hong Kong"). After a lucrative career in Asia, Filth settles into retirement in Dorset. With anatomical precision, Gardam reveals that, contrary to appearances, Sir Edward's life is seething with incident: a "raj orphan," whose mother died when he was born and whose father took no notice of him, he was shipped from Malaysia to Wales (cheaper than England) and entrusted to a foster mother who was cruel to him. What happened in the years before he settled into school, and was casually adopted by his best friend's kindly English country family, haunts, corrodes, and quickens Filth's heart; Gardam's prose is so economical that no moment she describes is either gratuitous or wasted. We read this book for our monthly book club meeting. There were eight members present the night we discussed it, and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. It is unusual for a book to get unanimous approval at our meetings, so that's a good sign. I thought it was well written with a deft touch in conveying the complexity of human relations and survival of difficult emotional experiences. It was not a sad or depressing book, but rather an amusing and compassionate rendering of people, with all their hurts and damages, just carrying on with life. I am glad to know it's first in a trilogy. I am sure someone in our book club will be recommending the second.

Others have done a good job of reviewing "Old Filth." I would like to add several things:For those who relish learning, or learning more, about life in what for most of us are unusual, even exotic, locations and cultures, "Old Filth" is a very good read. For those who enjoy delving into not-so-obvious aspects of history, especially that of the British Empire, this is a very good read. I highly recommend this book to either kind of reader. In addition, however, "Old Filth" is not just any old story. This book, which tells so much about the experiences and inner lives of "Raj Orphans" - a topic I have never before read about - is strangely timely, I think. In this world of fast-increasing globalization, there are more and more "global nomads," many of them children of those who work worldwide for diplomatic, international business, military, religious, NGO, and education enterprises. The question of what to do about the children - to keep uprooting them and moving them from place to place? to send them "home" (wherever home might be) at some point? to send them to whom? at what cost? - is still a very real one for such families. The impacts - positive, negative, short-term, long-lasting, emotional, psychological, social, educational, familial - that international, multi-cultural living has on human beings (especially children) are interesting ones, and are increasingly important for all of us to understand. Look, for instance, at President Barack Obama's childhood history, at what seems to be his self-containment / aloofness / detachment, and at his broad world view. Such issues as these are well laid out in Gardam's book and, even though her novel is set in an era that might appear to be no longer relevant, I suggest that these are, in fact, altogether relevant issues in today's world.I give this book four, rather than five, stars, because there are some difficulties with Gardam's writing, as other reviewers have pointed out. These can be viewed as off-putting, subtly skillful, or a combination of both, but the reader does have to work a bit to stay engaged to the very end. Still, for my money, the effort is well worth the effort.

Don't be put off by the title! An anacronym for Failed In London Try Hong Kong. I enjoyed the story and the way it was constructed. Basically an elderly man, Sir Edward Feathers, a long-retired now widowed judge, looks back on his life through rather random memories, but that is how memories do come back to you, not in a chronological sequence. It was a good portrayal of how let down by their parents even the smallest of children of British expats in the Far East were in the 1920's and 30's; they were parcelled back to Britain with scarcely a peck on the cheek, not knowing they would not see their parents for many years, if at all. The potential for abuse, neglect and abandonment, which was totally ignored, had a bearing on how they turned out as adults, their (in)ability to form relationships and so on. That all makes it sound rather grim and sombre, but it isn't. It is actually amusing, yet sad, light hearted yet deep. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

"Old Filth" has a curious appeal, to me. Bottom line is, I liked it and will read the next book in the trilogy (this being the first). The protagonist is not quite a protagonist; he doesn't actually do anything but wander along in a dotage that is not quite that, either, since he's blessed with extraordinary longevity and a personal charisma (of a most English, subdued kind) that renders him vital and interesting withal. But interesting in an odd way, too; occasionally, the author inserts stage-voice onlookers who comment that the old fellow always followed a smooth path to success and faced few obstacles. But various recapitulations of the real story about Old Filth (whose nickname is explained, don't worry) soon give us to understand that he'd endured much as a Raj orphan. Makes you marvel at the human spirit, that sort of thing. The thing that bothers me, though, is that, like so many of the characters in the book, I never really got to know Old Filth, or Eddie. I gather that, as he soldiered on, he had many extraordinary experiences. Suffice it to say, I definitely got the stiff upper lip part.

Capitalism and Desire: The Psychic Cost of Free Markets, by Todd McGowan

Review

Capitalism and Desire turns around the predominant leftist whining about the devastating psychic consequences of global capitalism, about how it undermines elementary structures of psychic stability which enable individuals to lead a meaningful life. The focus of Todd McGowan's effort is, rather, the enigma of the success of capitalist ideology: how was it possible for such a destabilizing life practice to fully capture the libidinal lives of billions, how was it possible that continuous crises and states of exception only strengthened its hold? In short, how is it possible that capitalism again and again imposes itself as the cure for the crisis it brings about? In answering these difficult questions, McGowan has produced a classic. (Slavoj ÂŽižek)McGowan's argument is positively brilliant―almost every page brings a startling insight and every chapter compels an exciting reorientation of thought. Because of its paradigm-shifting originality, Capitalism and Desire places McGowan among the most prominent critical thinkers of his generation and competes admirably even with the very best work of the generation before him. (Mari Ruti, author of The Call of Character: Living a Life Worth Living)With Capitalism and Desire, McGowan provides an admirably accessible and intellectually sophisticated analysis of the real connections between capitalism and psychoanalysis. This is a wonderful book demonstrating immense intellectual vitality―it is simply impossible to ignore. (Fabio Vighi, author of Critical Theory and the Crisis of Contemporary Capitalism)How many syntheses of Marx and Freud have been forged in an attempt to ground a critique of capitalism―only in the end to fail? After tallying their individual failures, this smart book goes on to confront their underlying problem: a botched reading of Freud. Relying on Lacan's radical re-excavation of Freud, McGowan offers brand-new ideas about the subject's ensnarement in the "freedoms" of capitalism and the possibilities of resistance to them. (Joan Copjec, author of Read My Desire: Lacan Against the Historicists)The immense satisfaction of McGowan's latest and most ambitious book is achieved, appropriately enough, by putting capitalism to the test of a suitably profound (and paradoxical) conception of satisfaction. Astonishingly far-ranging in its references yet written in perfectly limpid prose, Capitalism and Desire sets a new high-water mark in contemporary social and political philosophy. A dazzling work of theory. (Richard Boothby, author of Sex on the Couch: What Freud Still Has To Teach Us About Sex and Gender)

The scant negativity in reviews of this book end up reviewing the reviewer rather than the book itself. This is a shame. This book is vital for understanding contemporary attachment to capitalism. It’s a breath of fresh air in a crowded marketplace of intelligent books that endeavor to explain what capitalism is, what it does, why it does it, why it’s destined to fail. These books stop short of the territory McGowan deftly explores in this book: why, despite all of its manifest problems, do individuals and society at large sustain capitalism? McGowan’s answer, that there is keen psychic investment in capitalism, is a novel one and one worthy of a look by any reader who is in the mood for an incisive take on what can, in the hands of other writers, feel like an overwhelming topic.

A very insightful analysis of how living in a capitalist society affects/shapes our psyche.

This book is like psychoanalysis itself: it offers hope, but no guarantees, and understanding that it may or may not make one "better" or "improved" or more "conscious." I felt fortunate to have read it within the circumstances of our current life world, given as it is to promises that are not going to be kept and sales techniques overtly intended to deceive. That huge analytic word, desire, and the even larger concept of satisfaction that circulates through advertising and consumer goods messages, are given a common currency in McGowan's estimation of the psychic costs of Capitalism at the personal level of consumption and wish-fulfillment. Because we never get what we believe we are looking for - the sublime - we keep pursuing it - through production and spending. The disappointment keeps us as individuals suspended in a state of disappointment and loss, the actual aim of Capitalism's strategic schemas, and keeps the Capital system expanding, with ever more promise of ever more impossible satisfactions. We are not left out in the rain in McGowan's thought. Indeed, two primary "solutions" (there may be a better word for what he offers) to the ongoing experience of loss and disappointment are given. The first involves being appreciative of labor, of the actual work of production, in the moment of its embodied fabrication. The means to ends becomes an ever-present means that is a constant end, and is in our hands. The second involves the challenge of finding the sublime in the ordinary, the faraway perfection of fantasy in the mundane and at hand of the human, and the corresponding arrival of ethical accomplishment in our current configuration of concerns, rather than some future fantasy of superior ethical becoming. We are human, and we do the best we can. That is or should be enough. And that consciousness and practice is the end of Capitalism as an ideology of dominance and signification. The psyche, as such, appropriates the moment and those with whom we share and value it. There is no better love, product, message, image, commodity or fetish over the horizon or just around the corner. You and I are enough, in any context. The de-contextualizations of our moment to moment lives, the disturbance of desire with the seductions of greater value, beauty, wealth, power or knowledge, become the acts of displacement and usurpation that they are; production is assumed by us, in the moment, and that where the story ends because that is where the only real and temporal satisfactions are to be enjoyed.Wrestling outside this framework of immanent human involvement and concern wounds and frustrates. Capital feeds on the resulting confusion and despair. Capitalism is stimulated by our suffering, frustration and unhappiness. And because Capitalism can reward and enrich, at least temporarily, that potential for wounded and even pathogenic suffering grows, too. McGowan gives us complete responsibility for changing this by inviting us, as would any competent analyst, to take responsibility for our frameworks of living and our orientation toward what is and is not enough. I, for one, found the struggle to read and understand this book amply rewarding. It's payoff involves the recognition that our dissatisfaction, and our apparent preference for it over satisfaction, is not a by-product of a defective nature but the consequence of an internalized ideology that attention and care to what is close, human and immanently at hand can begin to reverse. We don't overthrow capitalism with resistance and rebellion; we transmute our ongoing dissatisfaction with the ordinary into a renewed apprehension of the sublime, locating it in the seemingly mundane of the human in the moments at hand. This is an inside job. The simplest and most immediate of things and persons turn out to be the greatest gift for achieving this revolutionary aim. In the long run, it probably turns out to be good for business, too.

I was at times charmed by some of the authors insights, and having a BA in philosophy, training in psychoanalysis, and a current interest in affect theories, I was also puzzled and eventually unconvinced by many of his connections and propositions. The lack of empirical evidence is not by itself a total detriment but given some of the seemingly outrageous ideas advanced. For example, proposing that car alarms in small cars are not primarily used to deter theft but to enhance the cars sublime image to the owner. pp. 227-8. If that is true, I'd like some evidence. I always thought the owner was taking a precaution so that they didn't have to walk home after losing several thousands of dollars to car theft. A factor of utility and use value not sublimation. On the other hand, I did find some of his perspectives on our attractions and disappointments engaging as well as the other authors he references. I can only recommend this book if the subject matter of the title is an intense interest to the reader.

A great kids book. My three, have read it over and over again! and Still love it!Face it, its the Wild Kratts brothers on another adventure! You get to learn fun animal facts while you are having fun reading! You cant go wrong with that!

My daughter loves Wild Kratts and loves reading these books. They are educational and an easy read. They aren’t put together very well as the seam does begin to separate rather quickly. But it’s an inexpensive book and I’m sure I can fix it with glue.

We adore the wild kratz TV show. So it was really nice to find that they also had corresponding books. They are all written by Christian Martin, and have the same stories as found in the movies. They are a 2.0 to 2.9 on the AR book scale.

this is one of the 5 in this book, which is a better buy5 Wild Creature Adventures! (Wild Kratts) (Step into Reading)

We love the Wild Kratts show and all the Step into Reading books. My son loves when I read the books to him and ask him to find Kratts brothers on every page.

We like the book but the back cover was completely bent when we got it. Must've been shipping problems.

My oldest son LOVES the Wild Kratts - and anything about animals in general. These books have been a hit with him and I find him reading them all the time.

Like the other Step into Reading books, this is well written, easy to read, and educational. Great as a “how about 1 more book” that is inevitably asked for right before bedtime.
