This was PACKED full of information and pictures, however, I was very sad to see the font was SO SMALL. This was a gift for my father-in-law (in his late 80's, otherwise great health). I'm concerned that he may have trouble reading it without help.

Purchased this for my elderly father. He absolutely loves it and reads it over and over. Nice book for those into trains.
There are two excellent books inside, 256 pages each (I did not count the blank ones at the end), both well documented and with lots of pictures from all around the world. The books belong to the famous Colin Garratt (the first one) and also famous Max Wade-Garratt. The first book contains solid information about the railway history and comprehensive information about the today trains. British, American, European, Asian, African, they are all here. The second book takes us to several journeys with picturesque trains, also from all continents. History is not neglected either. A fascinating lecture. Why than the modest rating (3 stars)? All of the above applies if you are new into the railway world. And preferable young, because the books are small (22.5cm or 8.8 inches tall) so both the pictures and the text are quite tiny, and there is a reason for that, I will explain further why. For the passionate reader though, these books are disappointing. This is not the "complete" history and the small pictures does not make it very "visual". It is also disappointing because none of the Amazon sites (US, UK, or Canadian) mention that this is not the first edition, it is in fact a reprint of a book from 2001 and 2003 (ISBN 1843092638) and 2006 (ISBN 0754816575), where both books appear inside a single cover, 512 pages altogether.But if you are really into trains just dig further and you will find the ORIGINAL two books. One is "The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives: A Complete Guide to the World's Most Fabulous Locomotives" by Colin Garratt, first print 1997 (ISBN 1901289400) and also in 2000 (ISBN 1859674550), also known as "The Complete Book of Locomotives" by Colin Garratt from 2000, 2009, and 2010 (ISBN 1844768775).The second is "The World's Great Railway Journeys" by Max Wade-Matthews from 1998 (ISBN 1840811269) and 2000 (ISBN 1859676928) and 2003 (ISBN 1840384808).Now, both these two books are BIG, 30 cm /12 inches tall, actually double the size of the recent reprint, which explains the fine print and the small pictures of the new version, since it is a 1/2 scale reproduction of the original, page by page and picture by picture.So, if you want small, buy new. If you want big, buy old, there are a lot of well-kept copies out there. BUT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THEM, be aware, there is nothing new here, amazon is just making a bad job in describing this "new" book.
