But that's just what Los Angeles physical therapist Brourman asserts here. Walking isn't just a great physical and meditative exercise, she points out, it's the physical activity we do most often. And just as imbalance, poor posture and untoned muscles can lead to painful injuries, correcting the way you walk and strengthening and stretching your muscles can speed your recovery or prevent you from getting hurt in the first place. Because Brourman doesn't have the luxury of seeing every reader personally, a great deal of the book is devoted to diagnosing and solving individual gait problems--something that can be done, she says, because the standards of human symmetry are the same for everyone. "The truth is that height, weight, proportions, age, sex, and all other human features and options don't change the basic elements of a symmetrical walk," she writes. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow (although some readers may be disconcerted by a common experience--when you start thinking about how you should be doing something you do every day, you start to "forget" how you did it in the first place). Those who are suffering from pain in such places as the back and the knees may be most motivated to follow Brourman's instructions, but she makes it clear that just about everyone can benefit from a good walk.

Anyone who has ever had a leg injury and subsequent pain in the other leg from an altered gait will agree with Brourman's assertion that incorrect movement while walking can lead to physical pain. As a registered physical therapist, Brourman has helped patients avoid surgery through exercises to improve muscle strength, posture, and movement. She explains how unbalanced walking leads to pain and what correct movement can achieve for a person who has experienced an orthopedic injury. She offers self-evaluation tests, gait correction methods, and strengthening and stretching exercises and uses case studies of her own patients as examples. Although there is some useful information here, physical therapists will justifiably advise that people with existing problems be under the supervision of a registered therapist; Brourman's instructions for the exercises are not easy to follow, and it could be dangerous for a patient to do a self-correction without guidance. The author has trained many PT's (Physical Therapists) in gait therapy and is well known in the industry. The book takes you thru the anatomy of alignment as an upright human form and then walks you thru a self diagnosis process to ascertain your personal alignment. She uses personal accounts of past client issues to paint how pain occurs thru long term habit patterns and trauma and then clearly shows you how to self correct them. I immediately was able to use her suggestions and benefited at once. This is a self help book, but as a yoga instructor for special needs clients I was also able to immediately incorporate her lessons into my own professional classes with great results.

This is one book I won't loan out because I'd be afraid I wouldn't get it back.It's very readable, and I go back from time to time to review what I've learned.When I bought the book I'd been trying for years to self-correct my gait. When I was in elementary school, I remember being very embarrassed because I had to wear very ugly and heavy thick brown orthopedic shoes with my dresses. They didn't do anything to correct the problem, but they sure called attention to it. As an adult, it never occurred to me to see a physical therapist for help, but using this book I was able to identify what I was doing wrong and to follow the instructions to correct it.It took time to correct my gait, not just a few weeks or months, but I did get there. Along the way, I got rid of most of my knee and hip pain, which I'd had since my twenties.The money I paid for this book is probably the best money I ever spent. If you're trying to decide whether or not to buy it, I highly recommend that you grab it while it is still available.

I had a lot of neck pain and couldn't control my body very well. Over time I became very weak. The doctors didn't know what to do. In order to help myself, I looked into every pain management book I could find. I tried many, including the well known Feldenkrais Method and the McKenzie Method for neck pain, but the pain would usually come back after a while.When I first read this book, I was skeptical--after having tried so many books to no avail, but the writing was interesting and after trying out the program for 6 weeks, my pain was kept at bay--for the first time in my life! This book not only teaches you how to strengthen your body, but also balances it. It takes a holistic approach. Together, they gave my body the tools it needed to get stronger and heal.I have also seen the author in private practice, but only for consultation. I like doing the exercises at my own time and place and enjoy the quiet time I have doing them-In fact, I call them my "meditation in motion." The money I have saved from seeing a PT or someone who works with the body such as an Alexander Technique teacher is incomparable. I have been doing these exercises and walking for nine years now, and it is still going strong. I like to run afterwards. If the exercises are safe enough for me, it would be safe enough for anyone.I was an artist and liked the 3D computer-animated illustration. The writing was simple enough for a layman like me to understand, yet thorough--the author even talks about how to breath while exercising; she left no stone unturned, and the tone of voice was warm.Thank you Ms. Brourman for sharing your amazing gift from God. It has changed my life.

I found this book in the library 2 yrs ago...was amazed at the depth of knowledge on walking and gait presented by an physical therapist...as none of the 3 or 4 I have been to know this stuff. As someone who was told by a chiropractor some 30 yrs ago I have scoliosis in 2 directions, I have had low back spasms, upper back spasms. Left knee had surgery for "chondromalacia" ( now a controversial diagnosis)in '85 and now is bone on bone with a shred of cartilidge that locks the knee in flexion. Hip on opposite side is losing cartilidge too, and pains in front of groin. This book has helped me figure out which joint is causing pain where, and I use the info to do walking therapy and trigger point therapy. I just walked the streets of New York for the first time...we did the subway without researching elevators first and durn near cried because of all the stairs, but after 2 days, I had figured out how to keep walking with minimum pain. This without doing the evaluation she gives in the book, which I will do when we get around to videoing on level ground. If you have the do-it-yourself will, this is the book for you. Having a little background in the name of muscles helps, but anyone can benefit from this amazing amount of knowledge. Author has a website...wish I could submit video for analysis and save time. Book has been reprinted in a smaller typeface..looks like pages might have been scanned and shrunk. I liked the first printing better, but would love a larger format, spiral bound edition that would lay flat next to my exercise area. Hope this knowledge becomes mainstream sometime.

I have sciatica/arthritis aggravated by wearing a walking cast and now I have to learn to walk (correctly) all over again. This book is exactly what my physical therapist is talking about - and it's right at my fingertips. I only had 4 sessions with the therapist After that he told me that I just had to learn to walk and sit correctly, no additional exercises. Walk right and I will eliminate the pain. Thanks to the book I have a continuing guide on how to do that.

Sherry has written one of the most important books on the physiology of walking and movement. Very smart woman and great teacher.

This book is not an easy read. But to anyone experiencing back pain, or other pains, related to vertebra and spinal cord, it is an invaluable resource. It really helped me and gave great encouragement. The author really knows what she is talking about. She is funny and very real. It takes alot of dedication to stick to it, but isn't good health and an optimally pain free healthy life worth it? I've read and re-read it, picking up new tips each time, adding to practicing and changing the way I walk. I am really grateful for this information!
